Changing The World. ( An observation of action in time )

When I first started documenting the demise of the old barn on Muddelty Creek she still had most of her roof. Now the winds have claimed the rusted tin that once was her crowning glory. The straight lines of her wooden ribs would have been crafted with loving care but now they’re twisted broken.

Even so, she fights to remain standing and rebuffs the gales of winter. The drive to exist renews her strength in spite of what the eye sees. But time will eventually be winner and one day only the footprint will remain.

In a comment to Tea With Jennifer on her post Living Life Well I mentioned the question “What have you done with your dash?”

The story goes that on your memorial there will be two dates. The day you were born and the day God calls you home. These dates are separated by a – that represents all the days in between. And that’s the most important part. That where you lived. All of the love, all of the good times and all of the struggles, everything is in that dash. What it means is up to you. As long as you have breath you are creating the future and you have a purpose. An individual might not be a super hero and save the world but you’re a super hero to someone. You might not leap tall buildings in a single bound but if you have a word of encouragement to share you might lift someone else over the top. The world is moved bit by bit and moment by moment by the many hands that do what they can as the opportunity arises.

So what have you done with your dash? You changed the world and you are changing the world still. But the direction of that change is up to you.

I have often been fascinated with the flow of water in the mountains. Even as a child I would sit and watch the rain trickle down the window. It was like I was looking through God’s kaleidoscope. The colors would refract in the water and the textures would change as the outside world seemed to melt into the little streams and run down the window.

Even today I can’t help but imagine that reflections in the water are parallel worlds with stories all their own. And then I wonder if the little world inside that drop of water that was brought to life by the light is aware that there’s an even bigger world outside of their realm?

It’s makes us have to ask, “what if our world is indeed inside a tiny drop of water owing our existence to the light shed into our lives?

That brings me to the goldfish analogy.

A goldfish is brought into a home by the owner and given a cozy home in a bowl. The owner feeds and cares for the goldfish and because the goldfish remembers being brought in he knows where all of his blessingscome from. After a while more goldfish are added to the bowl and they spawn. Time passes and the original goldfish that remembered where they came from pass away leaving their prodigy who only know life inside the fish bowl. They began to wonder how food falls from the surface and they remember being taught that a human feeds them. But they can’t imagine that there is any other world outside of the bowl. Eventually, some of them go on a quest for the human. They search every cubic inch of their bowl but they don’t find the human that feeds them. Some of them even declare that no human exists because they’ve searched whole bowl and can’t find him anywhere.

I continued to admire the little world caught in the droplet for a few minutes and turned my gaze to the clouds above my own head. I could feel the thankful smile growing on my face and I knew that someone smiled back.

Basic Elements

Back and White Photography

There are only three basic shapes in the known universe. The point, the Ray ( or line ) and the curve. Everything our eyes perceive is simply our brain’s interpretation of the way theses shapes are organized. Even a Jackson Pollock painting can be broken down into the three prime shapes. The only real difference is the complexity and arrangement of the elements.

Sometimes life gets really complex. On those days helps to break things down to their basic elements. Instead of the point like we have in art it’s the goal. In place of the Ray it’s the method and in place of the curve it’s the adjustment. The basic elements of life. All other elements are just patterns based on the three basics. Thus, the complexity can be dismantled and better understood. As the pattern builds and repeats it becomes easier to anticipate the next element.

The next thing is variance. We as humans are drawn to repeating patterns but we also have a need for variety. One of the reasons why I named tonight’s feature image “Basic Elements” is because of the repeated patterns. When I was first starting to learn photography as a form of fine art it was suggested that the more triangles that I could include the better the image would be received. “People like triangles” the lecturer said. Tonight’s image is full of triangular shapes but not rows of triangles. They are scattered across the picture as are the points and curves. This gives the eye something to find in different parts of picture in a way that keeps it from being boring.

We need variance in our lives. Routine is great for dependability but quickly degrades into monotony. Planning variance in our daily routine helps us avoid boredom and have a more fulfilling life pattern. It might be as simple as taking a different route to work or listening to a different style of music as we go about the daily tasks but breaking up the pattern is what’s important.

As looked through the broken bow of wreck I noticed that all of the elements were contained in the image presented to me as well as a few not covered in this post. It was time to snap the shutter and move on to the next opportunity. The big blue truck waits for me in the shade of the nearby forest and I can hear the call of the road beckoning me to come and find the next destination. That too is a pattern that I must follow.

Take Time To Grow

It’s not how you start out but where you end up that’s important. Growing as hard as it can this little hickory tree is barely a foot tall. But if it lives long enough it could end up being one hundred and twenty feet tall. But that’s not going to happen overnight. It’s likely to take hundreds of years of hot summers and icy winters. It will have to survive multiple windstorms and seasons of drought before it can be a giant.

In our age of technological wizardry when you can fix a hot meal and download your favorite feature length film in less than five minutes we have come to expect instant success. We want the “cheat codes” of life. But then what? You can’t cheat life without cheating yourself out of the reasons why winning is awesome. A one hundred and twenty feet tall tree that has never weathered the storms will be doomed to crashing down in the first gust of wind. Like our own bodies, a tree has to develop its strength and flexibility by being exposed to the harsh conditions. It takes time to develop that kind of strength. It’s a battle that often leaves scars inside the wood. Not every tree reaches its full height. In fact, the average hickory tree is only sixtyfive feet tall. About half of its potential. And still we sit beneath it’s branches in awe of its size not considering that at one point in its life it was just another plant growing in a ditch. Most of us would have mistaken it for a weed.

We shouldn’t measure our lives by where we are now. We need to consider that reaching our potential means weathering many storms and taking the time to develop those strong roots that hold us fast.
