Late Summer Sweetness

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Late Summer Sweetness 80521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Long mornings and early evenings slowly creep back into the mountains. Not so much that you’d notice right away but in another month or two the midday will seem very short. Subtle changes in the flow of the light begin to wake up Joe-Pye-Weed as it forms it’s pink cloud-like blossoms. It seems to tower above the all the other plants except for the trees. Although the flowers are just beginning to bud the sweet scent already surrounds the spots in which they grow. The little bumblebees can’t resist that promise of the nectar that crave so vigorously and are already exploring the blooms to scout out their claims. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day science discovered that these early visitations are a form of grooming that bloom. And that the best worked flowers produced the sweetest nectar and most potent pollen. Neither would it be a surprise to find that the bees mark these flowers in some way so that they know what plants they’ve groomed. My childlike imagination sees the little bees indexing each individual floret and saying to herself, “that one’s mine, that one’s mine, that one’s mine…”. She has an innocence of her own as she claims the whole plant and moves on to the next one as the soft morning ebbs towards noon.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Bee Camp

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Bee Camp 80421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The evening sun creeps towards the ridges and shadows begin to sweep across the landscape. The moist air carries the scent of Hibiscus and rain as a family of bumblebees take shelter for the night. In my imaginations I can see that the bees are on a camping trip and just prior to cuddling up in their hibiscus tent they sat around a firefly telling stories. The clouds gather as the sun fades into the distance and the evening rain falls softly. The bees are cozy and warm inside their blossom as they’re lulled to sleep by the gentle patter of raindrops. They know that the rain will bring more flowers to forage and dawn will be here before you know it. There will be plenty of life to enjoy when the morning chorus wakes them. And I too must cozy up and seek the dream world.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Closing Of The Dog Days 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Bumblebee Encounter 72921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact.

The Dog Days Of Summer began to wane ever so subtlety in my mountains. The humid air seems to be thick enough to actually swim through as I ebb softly to the edge of the swamp. The bumblebees are out en force dutifully collecting pollen from the swamp milkweed. Looking through the lens opens a window to their secret world of sweet scents and golden life giving pollen. As they collect a little here and a little there they ensure that they will have a new crop next year. The bumblebees are at peace with all. They’ve no time for jealousy and malice for as the dog days end their season reaches the tipping point when bloom will be scarce and the sun will slowly fall asleep. For in just eight short weeks the page will turn.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

One Busy Bee Indeed

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Silky Dogwood And Bumblebee 62321a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Overcast skies bless the wilderness with soft light in the afternoon as I wander around the highland delta with an old friend. All around us the native silky dogwood blooms beckoning busy workers. Bumblebees are solitary creatures that live in colonies rather than hives. A honeybee might have an off day on the job and be okay but for the fury little Bumblebees every moment has to count. She and her brood counts on her efforts alone. She is in constant motion as she grooms the flowers and entices them to sweeten the nectar then moves to the next one only to come back and collect her prize. A good day’s effort for a good day’s pay. Pound for pound she will visit hundreds of more flowers and spread more pollen than a single honehbee. She’ll take some back to the hole in a muddy bank and store it away for her hungry brood. As the colony hatches she will stay behind and her children will care for her. But for now she is very busy indeed.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

First Bumblebee Encounter 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Daily Duties 42821a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck delivers me to my home in the Appalachian Mountains. I’m greeted by my little songbirds who are little more tolerant of my presence this Spring. Most of them still take to the trees when I come out but they don’t retreat as far as they used to. As I remove my gear from the cab of the truck I give them the same “Hi-lo” whistle I use anytime I see them. I think it helps them to recognize me. They always seem to call back in their own songs. I notice that my white azaleas are blooming now. The pure white flowers are slightly bruised by the rain but still smell just as sweet. The local bumblebees would seem to agree. As I approach the bush to inspect them a huge bumblebee comes out to see who’s intruding on her daily chores. She’s not aggressive. She doesn’t charge me or attempt to get too close in any way. She seems to simply be inquisitive. Her curiosity doesn’t destract her from her duties however. After a few seconds she’s back on the job collecting pollen to carry back to her nest. Because of the amount of fur and colors I think she’s a leafcutter bee. They sometimes form colonies but unlike a hive each bee tends it’s own young and lives separate from the others. She’s busy but she doesn’t seem to be stressed about it. She takes her time and truly seems to enjoy her task. As an individual she’ll pollinate far more plants than an individual honeybee. Lao Tzu was correct when he said that “Nature doesn’t hurry and yet everything is accomplished.” Perhaps one day mankind will remember that as well.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
