First Bumblebee Encounter 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Daily Duties 42821a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck delivers me to my home in the Appalachian Mountains. I’m greeted by my little songbirds who are little more tolerant of my presence this Spring. Most of them still take to the trees when I come out but they don’t retreat as far as they used to. As I remove my gear from the cab of the truck I give them the same “Hi-lo” whistle I use anytime I see them. I think it helps them to recognize me. They always seem to call back in their own songs. I notice that my white azaleas are blooming now. The pure white flowers are slightly bruised by the rain but still smell just as sweet. The local bumblebees would seem to agree. As I approach the bush to inspect them a huge bumblebee comes out to see who’s intruding on her daily chores. She’s not aggressive. She doesn’t charge me or attempt to get too close in any way. She seems to simply be inquisitive. Her curiosity doesn’t destract her from her duties however. After a few seconds she’s back on the job collecting pollen to carry back to her nest. Because of the amount of fur and colors I think she’s a leafcutter bee. They sometimes form colonies but unlike a hive each bee tends it’s own young and lives separate from the others. She’s busy but she doesn’t seem to be stressed about it. She takes her time and truly seems to enjoy her task. As an individual she’ll pollinate far more plants than an individual honeybee. Lao Tzu was correct when he said that “Nature doesn’t hurry and yet everything is accomplished.” Perhaps one day mankind will remember that as well.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

When The Sun Sings

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “When The Sun Sings” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I sit in the cab of my big blue truck and watch the mists coalesce into droplets on my windshield. This winter has been soggy even though it’s a little warmer than normal. As the beads roll down the glass I close my eyes and recall a warm breeze that crossed my yard and gently rung the chimes. The wind smelled of mint and fresh cut grass. If I concentrate enough I can feel the warmth on face as a warbler trills out his love song. On the edge of the yard the flowers hum melody as thousands of tiny wings play in the breeze. The flowers shake and weave as the bumblebees drink their fill. They’ve become used to presence and pay no attention to me as I approach the sea of bright colors. They rise effortlessly into the air going from plant to plant. To me, they resemble an armada of tiny zeppelins in some steampunk vision of a future metropoulos.

The bumblebees have no worries as they work. The sun’s song is a call for them to live as God intended. Their lives are their own with little thought as to the ticking of a clock.

I hold the moment intensely in my mind with all its details intact and open my eyes with a deep breath. The gray sky hangs low but I feel a little warmer as I turn the key in the ignition and the rhythmic thumping of the wipers pushed the water aside. It’s time for the big blue truck to carry me back home.

A Summer Throwback To A Day With A Bumblebee

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bumblebee And Jewelweed 9319” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The slight sweet scent of multiple wildflowers lingers on the warm breeze as I meander along the edge of my forest. I live in an area known to be populated by rattlesnakes so I tread lightly and listen for the tell tale buzz that would let me know I’m not alone. I have lived in the area since the early 90s and only spotted a handful of rattlesnakes but they are definitely around. I don’t fear them but it’s wise to treat the one you didn’t see with respect. Eventually I heard a buzz but it wasn’t a snake. It was a busy little bumblebee lazily floating from flower to flower collecting pollen and nectar for her bread. She loves the Jewelweed and crawls right up into the flower as deep as she can often disappearing completely.

It took me a long time to get comfortable with any kind of bee after a bad experience with the European Bald Face Hornet as a young child. There was an empty wash tub upside down near the barn and I jumped on it. It was rusted out my foot went through the bottom and right into the nest. Hundreds of angry little warriors covered my foot and lower leg but fortunately couldn’t sting through the thick clothes if that era. However, the fear stuck with me up into adulthood. By facing my fear and forcing myself to get closer to them I can now even tolerate that black hornet and allow the wasps to get close.

The bumblebee is a great mom but a lousy business partner. She only makes enough honey and bee bread for her brood. No extra for the human who refused to clear out the weeds she feeds on. But that’s ok as long as she visits my garden too.

I snapped a few shots of her as she went about her chores and eventually left her to the tasks at hand.
