Waking Up & Waiting

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Azalea Buds 3220″and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

After the rain stops my mountain comes alive with songbirds. They dart hither and yon between the feeders trying their best to stay hidden. As the days progress I see more and more signs that warmer days are drawing closer. The texture of the forest has begun to change. The buds on the trees are really swollen and will soon erupt into lush greenery. The sound of Little Elk Creek giggling as it flows to the Gauley River also fills the air. The next mark on my natural calendar us the Mayflowers and Trout Lilies. I have noticed the variations in the colorsof the forest floor that tells me that something is bursting through the leaf litter. Patches of bright green break up the plane of dull brown hillsides. The mists are rising from the earth instead of settling upon it which tells me that the ground is warmer than air. It’s time to start prepping the garden when the soil wakes. I stepped over to the Orange Azalea and judging by the scales that have fallen off it won’t be much longer before it opens up and springs to life. In some ways I feel like I’m returning to life along with it.

The Opening Of The Bradford Pears

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bradford Pear 31520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Almost as if in defiance the overcast skies and gray weather the little Bradford Pears have exploded into bloom. And what’s even better is that it is starting to get green leaves. What the little tree lacks in food production and lumber value it makes up for in its ability to brighten up the bleak landscape of early Spring. After a long dark stretch of looking at empty branches and dried winter grasses the few green leaves tucked in around the clusters of white flowers had me feeling like schoolboy who was let out of class early. I have checked out the edge of my forest and the trout lilies are just breaking through the leaf litter in the shady spots. The grass is also waking up and soon it will be time to trade the snow blade on my little lawn tractor for a mowing deck. That will be a good trade.

As the days move forward I hope to the opportunity to catch more of the native flowers opening up as my mountain returns to life.

The Star Magnolia Bloom Of 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Stair Magnolia 3920” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The light turns soft and golden as the big blue truck delivers me to the parking lot in Smithers, West Virginia. I have spotted it from the highway, the large snow white bloom of the little Star Magnolia tree that always brings me joy at winter’s closing. In exactly one week the calendar will confirm what my heart has whispered for several days. Spring has finally sprung. I have been seeing the Bradford Pear trees burst out with bloom and there’s green leaves starting to shine on many of the smaller bushes. I can smell the sweet perfume of the magnolia as I close in for the shot. Each of large flowers seem to smile for the camera as the shutter snaps closed.

Image “Titled Welcoming The Sun”

The first blooms to open fully seem to embrace the light as the last rays cascade down into the little village.

Image Titled “Being Bashful”

Other blooms seem to be a little more bashful and cover their faces. Perhaps they’re wanting a little more coaxing from the light.

Image Titled “Sleeping In”

Just like humans, there’s the morning people who are awake and ready to take on the day and then there’s the “Not Morning People who sleep a little while longer.

The opening of this magnolia is a tick mark on my natural calendar. The waking of the trees has begun.

Winter Honeysuckle

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Honeysuckle Bush 3320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

When I open the door to my home the I’m greeted with the morning chorus. I have still not been able to get them used to my presence but that’s okay. Some things take a little time. Down in the corner of my property is the overgrown honeysuckle bush. I’ve allowed it and the Forsythia bush on the other end of the yard to grow thick. The tangle of long thin branches seem to make the perfect cover for my more reclusive visitors. In addition to the bird habitat the honeysuckle bush provides me with an early bloom that lasts well into summer. Sometimes when venture into that area I’ll find the body forms of deer that have bedded down beneath the dropping branches.

The particular type of honeysuckle is winter honeysuckle. It’s not native to Appalachia but the early bloom does provide forage for pollenators early in the year when other plants ate still asleep.

As I move closer I can hear the flutter of the tiny wings as one of Chickadees plays a game of hide and seek by keeping as much of bush between us as he can. Not wanting to preserve the little guy, I zoomed in my long lens and snapped tonight’s feature image.

Afternoon Stroll

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Afternoon Stroll 3820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Softly and cautiously the little doe picks her way through the brambles. The March wind has dried up the soggy ground and the sun gives her a welcomed warmth. The previous days were dark and cold with precious little to browse. But with the arrival of the sun the buds have lost their hard scales and offered her the tender morsels on the tips of the lower branches. This nutrition is desperately needed by the new life growing inside of her. Her yearling fawn follows just inside the trees watching her and learning what is good to feed on this time of year. There’s so much to learn and she has to get it right the first time because next year’s generation will depend on the yearling for wisdom and knowledge. Both deer tremble slightly as they pass by the big blue truck stopped in the middle of the road. Here on the outskirts of the capital city they are seldom chased but the instinct to flee is strong. The mother doe casts a glance back to young one and together they move behind the scrubby bushes near the road. Not wanting to disturb their meal any further, I allow engine to carry me forward at idle speed. Perhaps if they aren’t pressured they’ll allow me to get closer next time.
