The Morning Smile

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Morning Smile 3320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The saturated earth gives slightly as I tread out to my thinking spot. The warm day and time of year makes me a little more cautious about where I step just in case one of our pit vipers has awakened from hibernation early. I was on my way to to practice some long exposure techniques on the little drainage ditch that runs off of my mountain and into Little Elk Creek. And there it was. The smile from nature that I’ve been longing for since Christmas. The Harbinger Of Spring. To give you an idea of how small the flowers are the black speck is a flea beetle and about 1/10 of an inch long. The plant is also known as Pepper and Salt and the scientific name is Erigenia Bulbosa but I am partial to Harbinger Of Spring. According to Wikipedia it is the first wildflower to bloom in Spring but I’m a little dubious about the accuracy since my fly honeysuckle started opening a few days ago. Nevertheless, it is a most welcomed sight. It means that I’ll soon be seeing the Carolina Spring Beauty, Fiddleheads ( young fern fronds ) and the Trillium.

One thing that I agree with Wikipedia on is the importance of these tiny flowers for solitary bees like the mason bees that will emerge from their holes into a harsh world. Before 1622 solitary bees were the main pollenators in North America. It stands to reason that their lifestyle would be closely tied to early blooming plants like Harbinger Of Spring. I have looked around the area where I found this one and it seems to be the very first one to pop up on my place. It also wasn’t there yesterday ( or at least it wasn’t in bloom) because I was in the same spot and actually looking for any changes to forest floor. But from this day forward I expect to see life explode onto the scene.

The Bite Of Winter 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Bite Of Winter 2020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

An old joke goes that if you don’t like the West Virginia weather all you need to do wait a few minutes and it will change. Almost as soon as the Forsythia bloomed in Smithers the bitter cold settled. The waterfall at the old wall has all but stopped flowing. I’ve always thought that icicles look like teeth. In my imagination the waterfall becomes the very bite of winter itself. However, this is normal. This time of year we have a series of cold and warm weather. And it’s a good thing too. The frost heave is how nature sews the seeds of a lot of the wild plants. The cold makes the water in the soil expand and stand up then as it thaws it covers the seed. This action also opens the protective cover of some seed allowing germination to take place in next few weeks. By late March ( At my latitude ) most of the bitter cold will be gone and we typically have a light dusting of snow near the Easter holiday. I haven’t really looked into it but my gut feeling is that the longer days excite the jet stream in the upper atmosphere and the cold Arctic air is pulled South this time of year.

For now I’ll just bundle up in jacket and wait until old man winter loses his teeth and retreats back to the North.

First Bloom In 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “First Bloom 22520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Softly the rain drifts through the mountains kissing the landscape before pooling and making it’s way back to the river. The cycles of the rise and fall of the water seem never ending in the Eastern Forests. I have the day off so I decided to take a trip and venture out to look for some fresh photos for you. These trips often mean me just driving until I spot something that stands out from the background. Which is exactly what happened today. I don’t know why this little spot in Smithers West Virginia is different but every year it yields the first blooms of the season. Usually several days ahead of the rest of my area. Forsythia is one of the very first plants to wake from its long winter slumber and smile at the passersby. The bright yellow flowers always bring a welcome break from the doldrums of winter. I don’t mean to mislead you. We do have more cold weather on the way. We’ve been told to expect snow within the next few days and it’s normal to see the Forsythia flowers covered with ice and snow. It opens not because of warm weather but because of the Earth’s angle to the sun and the length of the day. It’s because of this I believe that this little strip of land must have just the right solar aspects give it a head start on everything else. Officially, it’s only 22 or 21 days until the Calendar start of Spring But from the blooming of this bush forward is when the land really starts to wake up and get ready to receive the light.

The Winds Of Change

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Casting Seeds 022220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck comes to a rest on the edge of the marsh at Muddelty Creek. I had decided to take a few minutes and see if the Red wing Blackbirds had returned. I pressed the button on my door and lowered the windows to listen for that familiar trolling call to ring out through the cattails. There was a few random calls from the chickadees but no red wing Blackbirds. At least not yet. Out in the distance a few ducks paddled around in the water at the very outer limit of my longest lens. I tried to stalk in closer but one loud quack and the whole flock became airborne at once disappearing into the bushes. And then the wind came filling the air with downy seeds that circled in the eddies. It was almost like snow. Everywhere I looked the cattail seed floated softly by. This area has the largest concentration of cattails I’ve seen. The highland delta is a bit of a rare thing here.

I decided to take the opportunity to capture the moment when the seeds found the breeze and discovered that the breezes were changing direction. A gust would come from the south and a few minutes later the next one would hail from the North.

A breeze from the North moving the down in the opposite direction of the feature image.

The southern breeze had more activity today and that means that seasons are changing. It’s only 25 days before the first day of Spring!

Are you ready for the change? Let me know in the comments below. 😊

The Landscape Stirs

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bradford Pear 21420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Old man winter blasts the parking lot with his icy breath bringing forth our annual St. Valentine’s Day snow. I have noticed that in my little slice of Appalachia that we’re more likely to have a wet Christmas and a white Valentine’s Day. However, this year it was actually too cold for snow. We only got a few flakes that quickly dissipated. And even in spite of the bitter cold I noticed that Mother Nature is slowly opening her eyes from the deep sleep of winter.

In the urban areas the Bradford Pear is one of the first to wake up. As the big blue truck carried me by I noticed the buds are starting to swell. The papery outer scales have started to slip away and reveal the light green promise of new life. And this hits a mark on my natural calendar. Time of the swollen buds. It will most likely be several weeks before they actually open and even then it’s common to have snow covered flowers but as they drop the pear leaves begin to burst open and the other flowers follow. The Service berry, magnolia and Dogwood will also be making an appearance. Usually it’s April when they come out.

The temperature actually has less to do with the buds opening and more do with the earth’s angle to the sun and wavelength of the the light that hits the tree. So I pay attention to the Bradford Pear buds and take note of what they’re saying. Tonight they say “Get ready. It’s not much longer before the land is fully awake.”
