Finding The Best Version

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Blue Winged Wasp 90121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The warm sunshine washes over my little slice of Appalachia and fills the mountains with life. I love technology but it often gets in the way of living. I think about what my ancestors might be doing on a day like this. I know that they worked hard and that a lot of days there was pressure to put away stores for the coming winter but I also think that there was more peace in doing so. There was more personal benefit to labor and so each moment had less demand for production beyond basic needs. A wise person once encouraged me to change my perspective on life and consider that we don’t pay for things with money but with the finite time given to us. This was a life changing thing for me and aside from other things I began to realize that this was the secret of the great achievements in history. It was the time that inventors had leftover from meeting basic needs that gave opportunity for planning and making. It was time spent in deep reflection that revealed profound truth to ancient philosophers. Plato wasn’t born with a copy of The Republic in his hands. Susan Catherine Koerner Wright didn’t deliver two boys and an airplane. There’s no doubt that these people didn’t make great sacrifices to bring their creations into being but the time they had to develop themselves in the process was there. This is why I always want to encourage you to find your moment of tranquility each day. It’s in that simple moment when you can remove yourself from the distractions of modern life that you can be who you were truly meant to be. And I believe you have greatness in you. We all have different talents and such. Not all are going to be the greatest in history at whatever that talent is but we can all be the greatest version of ourselves and that is a level of mastery worth reaching for.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Growing Where You’re Planted

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Faith In Struggles 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The large stone guards the boundaries between asphalt and forest. The summer storm has delivered a refreshing quench to the thirsty life that clings on in the unlikely spot. Or perhaps it’s not really as unlikely as it would seem to be at first glance. The stone was placed by man. A barrier to keep the cars out of forest and the forest out of the parking lot. But the wind delivered the spores and the rains helped them grow and the moss conquered a new frontier. Now the stone holds water with the help of the moss and its symbiotic fungus. It not only holds the moss but the fungus mines that stone in enough excess that the ferns also found a home. And then the tiny seed of an elm took root as well. It’s long been said that we should grow where God plants us. This sounds like an impossible task at times but when I see the beginnings of a tree as large as an elm grow on what was bare rock just a few short years ago then I know that if he plants me in an unlikely place that he knows for sure there’s more there than meets the eye. That spot is prepared ahead of time with us in mind. No, it’s not easy at first. There’s going to be struggles and times when the rain doesn’t fall or that it falls all at once and the river threatens to wash us away. But if we just hang on one day we’ll be holding that rock in place. If the little elm can make it until it’s roots reach the soil below it is possible that it could completely envelop the rock and both will unmoved in its season.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Scattered Thoughts From The Heart Of The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Heart Of The Forest 60921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The forest path brings me to a certain spot where sunlight Breeches the thick canopy and illuminates the life contained among ancient boles. Small fairyflies float effortlessly in sunbeams while the birds teach their children the songs of their ancestors. Somewhere in the distance I hear the hooves of a deer retreat deeper into a world unseen behind thick rhododendrons. Sudden movements among fronds gives away the chipmunk that is scurrying for the comfort of his tunnels. For a moment I remove my shoes and feel the cool damp moss of the forest floor. As I close my eyes and sample the wind it brings me the scent of the earth mingled with the blooms of the rhododendrons. The warm rays of the sun wash over me and gently drive away the worries of the modern world. Outside the voices that come through technology with their many different concerns about things beyond control would pull us away from what is important. But they can’t come here to the heart of the forest on the high mountain. I open my eyes and see the heart shaped leaves of the redbud. It’s beautiful bloom has long since fallen and the pea like pods have not yet formed. It is at rest and gathering energy to grow its fruit. All life has this cycle. A period of spectacular glory that shows the possibility of what may come and a period of waiting for the fruit to develop. In the modern world we have gotten used to everything being now. Instant messaging, up to the moment news cycles and such. Have we forgotten the importance of quiet time? It’s in those periods when nothing seems to be happening that the miracles are developing without fanfare. I think of the character “Miracle Max” from the Princess Bride saying that you should never rush a miracle man or you’ll get rotten miracles. ” What was said in jest there was a deeper truth than intended. It takes time to for the fruits of our efforts to develop and just because we don’t see it right now doesn’t mean we failed or that God has failed us. As mortal beings our perspective of time is very narrow. But if we could see it from outside of our perspective we could realize how quickly things are actually happening.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Reaching For The New Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reaching For The Light 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Deep beneath the layers of leaves and duff the tiny roots feel the calling of the sun. The warmth of the new light kindles a refreshing of life in the long dormant forests. The little mottled leaf pushes back the dark blanket of yesterday’s glory to greet the new life of today.  But isn’t that how all of life goes? What was yesterday’s glory must be shed eventually. Certainly we need to rest beneath our accomplishments for while to recover our strength but eventually we have to leave that place in order to grow again. And although what rises above the surface is wonderful and beautiful it’s not really the core of our being. Our true self is the roots that grow unseen deep beneath the surface. The parts above are really only there to engage with the light and feed our roots.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days!

Awakening Promise

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Awakening Promise 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The morning sun reclaims the dew in the form of mists rising from the ancient Appalachian Mountains as O step into a new day. I’ve been monitoring the slightest changes since the long dark of December 21st. Each little sign pulls my heart towards the end of the cold months and the refreshing of my beloved forest. One of my favorite memes on social media is an image of Noah’s Ark that says “Sometimes faith will make you look stupid.” Eight years ago I moved into my current home and while exploring the property I noticed several plants with onions like leaves growing in a very straight line. I presumed that someone had placed them there of course but for eight years there were only green leaves that never bloomed. I have no idea how long the bulbs were in the ground before they even sent up the leaves but whoever put them there did so in faith that one day there would be flowers to welcome the new season. But they never got to see them bloom themselves. The former residents were very elderly and passed away which is how the house became available to you wife and I on the market in the first place. As I knelt down on still wet earth to take the photo of the first bloom of these flowers planted in faith all those years ago I found myself thinking about acts of faith. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing something with the expectation that you’ll soon reap the rewards of your efforts but sometimes that’s not how it works out. Sometimes the things that we do go beyond our own lives. Even if that’s not what we expected at the time. In fact even as I write this article I’m thinking that because our works tend to occupy the world beyond our lives that it’s even more important to listen to that inspiration and make sure that we do good things. One day that promise will awaken and just because we don’t see the immediate results doesn’t mean we failed. It just means that something more has to happen within its appointed time. We may not even see it within our time on earth but that effort was not wasted. It just takes time to awaken.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
