Late Summer Sweetness

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Late Summer Sweetness 80521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Long mornings and early evenings slowly creep back into the mountains. Not so much that you’d notice right away but in another month or two the midday will seem very short. Subtle changes in the flow of the light begin to wake up Joe-Pye-Weed as it forms it’s pink cloud-like blossoms. It seems to tower above the all the other plants except for the trees. Although the flowers are just beginning to bud the sweet scent already surrounds the spots in which they grow. The little bumblebees can’t resist that promise of the nectar that crave so vigorously and are already exploring the blooms to scout out their claims. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day science discovered that these early visitations are a form of grooming that bloom. And that the best worked flowers produced the sweetest nectar and most potent pollen. Neither would it be a surprise to find that the bees mark these flowers in some way so that they know what plants they’ve groomed. My childlike imagination sees the little bees indexing each individual floret and saying to herself, “that one’s mine, that one’s mine, that one’s mine…”. She has an innocence of her own as she claims the whole plant and moves on to the next one as the soft morning ebbs towards noon.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

For those who have been following me on Facebook and know of the struggle content providers have to get circulation from big tech I’ve been recommending for people to adopt MeWe as a social media platform. Life Sake Of Living

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Viceroy Butterfly In Joe Pye Weed 91220b” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Warm floral scents waft over the wetlands as I simply stand in the sun. All around me the butterfly population is exploding in brilliant, glorious colors. They’re territorial chases with each other seem like playful games of tag and in some cases I think it is all about fun as they ride the wind. One of them always breaks away from the others and returns to the same spot on the Joe Pye Weed. It’s only interest is to simply enjoy life for the sake of living. And that’s a good way to live beyond existence.

Announcement:

I am adding additional social media to my network. Eventually, I’ll be leaving Facebook behind for a multitude of reasons. Even though the Lloyd’s Lens Photography page is strictly non-political I have been restricted from interacting with followers with no explanation for why. But it’s not just that. For years now Facebook has throttled content providers in general. They encourage us to grow our audience and then want to sell us back the access to them. In addition, they collect and sell the data from our interaction. So Facebook has become an entanglement of thorns. In response I have created the Lloyd’s Lens Photography Discussion Group on MeWe. We can still interact directly on the blog but starting today I’ll be looking for more platforms that respect the privacy of my followers and don’t limit who gets to see the post.

I want you to join my group on MeWe: https://mewe.com/join/lloydslensphotographydiscussiongroup

The Shattered Sunset. An alternative mythos of the Monarch butterfly.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Monarch & Joe Pye Weed 90820a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

From my youth I have always been fascinated with myth and legend. So much so that sometimes I write alternative mythos. My mythology isn’t intended to be anything but good entertainmen and any resemblance to the mythology of an actual culture is purely coincidence.

The marsh falls silent in the September sun as the Monarch explores the sweet blooms that dominate the edge of water. The orange butterfly gracefully navigates through through the bloom and checks each of the florets with delicate precision. My imagination began to concoct a mythos of the Monarch.

My minds eye conceives a sachem on the edge of a cliff looking out over the New River Gorge. As the sun sets below the canyon rim get beholds the sunset in all its glory. But in his vision a shooting star strikes that part of the sky and the sunset shatters into the night sky. The amber shards of the sky fall into canyon and litter the ground. Saddened by the loss of the beautiful sunset the sachem is moved to play a mournful tune on his flute. As his tears fall into canyon they rain onto the shards of amber sunset and they began to live. Through his tears the sachem sees the living sunset shards and his mournful tune changes to an expression of joy. He continues to pipe the more lively tune into the dawn when the transformation of the sky shards into butterflies is complete and the valley below is filled with life. And so the Monarch butterfly now begins it’s life feeding on the bitterness of the milkweed but soon transforms into little living sunset full of joy.

September Gatherings On Muddelty Creek

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Shared Sweetness 90820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The gentle September sun washes over the marsh as I step out from the big blue truck. The melodic calls of the Red-winged Blackbird are notably absent from the soft breezes. Instead I hear the drone of grasshoppers on the edge of water where they can enjoy the tall grass. The swamp roses have shed their pedals and brilliant red orbs have begun to appear in the thorny branches. The Silky Dogwood now sports blue fruit among the reddish leaves all throughout the water’s edge. But God is not finished with the season of growth yet. Amid the fresh spires of cattails the Joe Pye weed is in full glory. The sweet smell of the bloom brings in the butterflies from all directions. They float in on sunbeams resembling shards of stained glass. The bountiful harvest of sweet nectar is gathered by all without jealousy. The bright yellow Swallowtail and spectacular monarch butterflies seem to enjoy fellowship with Pipevine and Spicebush alike. And deeper into the untamed wilderness I see blues and sulphur butterflies along with painted ladies and skippers. All have come to the delta to partake in celebration of last days of summer.

Daily Tasks & A Lesson From A Butterfly

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Pipevine Swallowtail Visiting Joe Pye Weed 82020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The sweet scent of the wildflowers drifts in the humid air. The ever present songbirds call from hidden perches in the thick canopy. I stood there enjoying the blessings of life in Appalachia as the pipevine Swallowtail sailed in on the breeze. And deftly lit on the buds of the Joe Pye Weed. Her world is one of a constant struggle for survival and yet she carries peaceful contentment on her wings. I have to wonder if her secret is that she only concerns herself with the task at hand. When it’s time to evade the bird she dips and flips and the bird is confounded. When she’s hungry she feeds on one bloom at a time and when she’s done she dances in the wind. She has all the tasks that are common to life on planet earth but she doesn’t try to do them all at once. She simply takes care of them as the need arises and when they’re complete she leaves that task done.
