Aquatic Tranquility In November

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Aquatic Tranquility 110420a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Ripples spread gently across the water’s surface and Softly lap at the muddy embankment of the pond. The fiery colors of the leaves no longer share their hue with the aquatic landscape but in their place the tall trees stretch out to anchor the shore between two skys. This is the realm of the waterfowl who are equally at home in air and sea. Gracefully they glide through on their daily routine. The make no sound but stay in perfect unison as they patrol their domain. As the ripples reach my position nestled behind the fence each splash of the water lapping over clay and stone ebbs away the excess emotion from my being. Life was always intended to be so simple as this tranquil moment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Day Of Wandering

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Dogwood Tree 102120a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The green fields have begun to fade into a golden tan as the broomsedge claims it’s seasons. Sometimes I think that if we could see the wind that it would be the color of broomsedge. I’ve always associated it with cold windy days. But for now it’s only beginning to appear. The little Dogwood Tree still proudly shows off its handsome maroon attire for the fall splendor so beloved in my mountains. Rolling hills beckons me back to a simpler place in time when the warm fall days were a welcomed chance to roam freely with no expectations of when to be done exploring. The greatest tragedy of adulthood is loss of opportunities to wander through hills and valleys. Sometimes I’d follow a stream through a field like this and continue on into the deep woods on a quest to find the spring that birthed the creek. A fallen branch of Dogwood often served as a staff to push aside the thorns and tangled vegetation or lift a rock to see if anything lived underneath. I never made it to the source of the stream but I would mark my stopping point by tying a knot in the limber twigs of the smaller trees. Sometimes I’d find a cluster of small hemlock trees and braid three of them together so that the next explorer would know the someone had already found that spot. And if I was lucky it would be hundreds of years in the future when the trees were timber sized and fused together. I would always walk back while snickering over the looks on their faces when they laid eyes on the braided trees. The call of a blue jay brings me back to the present as I snap the image of the Dogwood Tree and I wonder if some day in future a small boy will pick up a dead branch from it and head off into the woods on a quest of his own. I hope that he finds one of my braided trees and knows that he’s not alone.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Approaching Home

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Pocahontas Trail 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The steady drone of my tires against the pavement permeates the cab of my truck. The warm colors of Fall flicker past the windows as I wind my way down the Pocahontas Trail in the last stretch towards home and the hearts that abide with me. Tolkien said that all who wander are not lost and at the moment I’m thankful that wanderings end at one’s own hearth. So what if the fire is made of ceramic logs and fed by natural gas? It’s home and it’s rest.

Rest well Friends and be blessed throughout your days.

All You Really Need Is One Chance

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Shy Walker In The Woods 110320” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Soft breezes gently caress the tall grass making sway ever so slightly. The warm sun yields yet a little more life to the season but that will soon change as the damp days of late fall ebb closer. The road through the park is all but abandoned so I set the breaks and step out to look for my next photo. The silence of the park is broken by the sound of footsteps on dry leaves and at first I thought that some hiker would be wandering up from the old trail that leads through the ancient boles of virgin timber. The sound draws nearer and I can now hear the subtle “stutter” of four feet walking as opposed to the steady marching of only two feet. The breeze delivers the hint of musk and I knew that she’d soon step from the shadows. I braced the camera on the hood of the big blue truck zoomed in past the reflection of paint. As she began to top the embankment that separates the field from the forest her keen ears twitched my direction. The whitetail is able to see movement but for the most part these deer are nearsighted. However you cannot fool those ears or if the wind shifts that nose. She knows I’m there but she hasn’t quite pinpointed me yet. Her instincts to hide from whatever is on the pavement has locked behind the few sparse blades of grass. As far as she is concerned she’s invisible. The beep of the automatic focus echoes in those amazing ears and for a split second her lock onto the lens. You only get one chance sometimes I thought as the shutter snaps. The doe whirls back and in a single bound vanishes below the crest of the hill. One chance was all I had. But if you’re set and ready one chance is all you need.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Moment By The Pond

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “By The Pond 110420a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck comes to a rest on the side of highway. Back in the summer the grass was too thick for me to be comfortable that I wasn’t about to step on a snake or a nest of yellowjackets. But the cool November air and the fact that the ground has been mowed changed that. I grabbed my gear and gave the remote a quick double click so that ol’ Blue would respond with a happy beep of his horn to assure me that locks engaged. My monopod made a decent hiking stick to balance my descent down to fence. As I near the pond the breeze drowns out the noise of the highway and creates the surreal feeling of entertaining a different world. The fence is weathered and overgrown with vines and dried seed headsof wildflowers. Rusted nails hold up the woven wires that separate me from the water’s edge. The sunlight plays on ponds surface by painting a mirror image of the sky and treetops. It’s a good place to absorb the solitude and collect some peace of mind as the breeze washes away the stress and uncertainty of the outside world. It only takes a moment to recharge the spirit and renew the mind. After a few minutes of tranquility by the pond it’s time to make my egress back to highway where the big blue truck waits to carry me to another place in creation and show me yet another small splendor.

Peace be with you Friends. Good night and be blessed throughout your days.
