A Short Visit with a Tiger Swallowtail

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Ironweed 90420a ” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The September sun smiles on an open field in the bottom-lands after a rain. The humid air is saturated with the smell of the ironweed. At first you only notice a single set of wings soaring in on the thermal eddies rising from the blacktop. Gentle tilts of the wings direct the Tiger Swallowtail towards it’s treasure. The Ironweed has just started coming into full bloom. The aroma has driven the butterflies into a frenzy and they’re coming from all directions. The Tiger Swallowtail circles over the engine of the big blue truck while gathering altitude before gliding down and coming to rest on the purple flowers. The old pasture has become a sea of purple and yellow flowers exploded into a grand finale of the summer season. I could spend the whole day photographing the butterflies and to my joy the honeybees are out in what seems to be full force gathering for their winter stores. But the road ahead calls me forward to my next destination.

Visited By A Flying Lobster

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “September Visitor 90720” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Amid the the rain kissed leaves and blooms the flight pattern catches and holds my eye. I’ve been watching out for a chance to photograph a ruby throated hummingbird but he’s very camera shy and vanishes into the forest when he feels my gaze. The hummingbird continues to elude me. However, the visitor who buzzed into view is just as special in its own way.

Outsiders to the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia would swear that I had been hitting the still if I told them that I was visited by a flying lobster but that’s what we call them. The articulated tail which helps it hover really resembles the tail of a lobster. I suppose that some of the old timers had a lot fun at the expense of those who braved the muddy trails into wild mountains with tales of a crustacean that swims through the air. Of course the rest of North America knows it as the Snowberry Clearwing Moth. The unusual thing is that this moth is active in the day and into the night. It’s completely enthralled with the sweet purple flowers of the tall ironweed. It circles each cluster grooming the flowers with powerful beat of it’s wings. In response the flowers sweeten their nectar to ensure that the moth continues to feed and catch more pollen in its fur. The field is covered in ironweed and it’s really easy to see why my ancestors envisioned the moth as a lobster flying through the coral. The bees and butterflies also swarm around the foliage but there’s only one flying lobster. It’s not rare, only unique.

Enjoying The Last Few Days Of The Lake Season

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Crossing The Lake 90120” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

In the last days of the summer heat we flock to the lake to enjoy just a few more days of the tranquil life. It’s been ages since I’ve actually merged with the waters and allowed myself to slip from the busy outside world. I’ve piloted small cruisers and pontoon boats on the lake and it’s nice to be able to cover the range of travel that Summersville Lake offers but in some ways the larger vessels are also a barrier to the experience of the water. But a small human powered craft is more than a mode of travel. It’s a link that syncs with the environment. The connection to the water is undeniable from the moment you settle in and begin to stroke the water with an oar or paddle. The motorboat is a fine machine but canoes, kayaks and jon boats are living beings with a soul of their own. As you glide through the water your craft speaks to you. Her voice is more felt than heard as she guides you to the other side of lake. The bond is a partnership of human and boat as they perform a choreographed dance through the liquid world. Perhaps the voyage is to track a fish waiting in special spot or maybe it’s journey of discovery just to see what’s over there on the other shore. Or maybe it’s all about the solitude of a quiet cove laden with driftwood and to spot the deer enjoying a rest in the shadows. The opportunity for enjoying this bond is growing shot. The Lake itself will soon leave it’s summer home in the mountains of West Virginia and march south to Gulf of Mexico to join the Atlantic Ocean. And old Sol grows weary from lending his warmth to the world.

Waiting For A Friend

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Waiting For A Friend 81320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Sunshine pushes back the morning rain. A tiny flyer zipped through the bushes and looped the loop before coming to an abrupt stop on leaf. His little eyes monitor the forest edge for the slightest movement. But not just any movement. No, this little guy was looking for a specific movement. The Swallowtails passed, the blues pass and even a Regal monarch soared past and still the sturdy little skipper is not moved. A yellowjacket buzzed near and the little skipper darted out like a jet fighter to send him on his way but as soon as victory was secure he returned to hit spot on the leaf without hesitation. He kept his vigil for what seemed like an eternity but then from underneath a Spicebush a second little skipper appeared. The first little skipper sprung from his post and looped the loop all the way over to the second. His little heart was overjoyed as they flew away together. This was the friend that he’d been waiting for all along.

A Moment Of Summer Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Beneath The Sun 71020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Beneath the sun soft breezes whisper blissful dreams. The small workers labor tirelessly to gather their sweet rewards among nature’s treasures. The tall grass suddenly ripples with excitement. Above the fronds a tail wags in delight and satisfaction as the sharp nose picks up the trail. The hound announces his success with a long bay and the chase is on. The unseen rabbit explodes into a zigzag run and doubles back to his hole where he laughs knowing that the hound will never figure out which trail is the real one. Back door of a homestead opens and the small voice calls the dog’s name in a melodic tone. Abandoning the chase for a more coveted prize the tail makes a straight line for the door and the pure joy that waits near it. These are the best days of the season and the life of it is in the moment that is that is held precious.
