A Call To Summer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Black-eyed Susan 62020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Shadows slowly creep down the mountains in the cool of the evening. The big blue truck coasts to a halt. The solstice wouldn’t be for another 24 hours but the natural calendar doesn’t care for such restraints. Already a few Black-eyed Susans have sprung to life to share their sunny smiles. With golden manes in full display each one presents itself proudly to the like colored orb which wakes them from their slumber. The season of fire and fun has begun. Long days of swimming in the lake and wading in the shade of the creeks and rivers. They call us to roast weenies and marshmallows over a campfire and listen to the tales of the one that got away. Summer has begun. Grab ahold with both hands and treasure every moment for all too soon the chill in the wind will strip away the lush green and fill the world with amber.

The Pond King … A Fishy Tale.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Reflection And Raindrops 21620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Raindrops gently disturb the reflections of the forest on the ponds surface obscuring the image that reaches into the murky depths. Small birds skim the surface as they pursue the retreating insects. The king of pond rises slowly in case the birds drop their quarry into his realm. His eyes are tuned to ripping surface and he knows the difference between a cicada that was carelessly lost and the thousands of raindrops that replenish his kingdom. He can feel each vibration report the precise location of the disturbance. There it is. In the midst of the pitter patter of rain was a plop and then intermittent buzzing of papery wings. The olfactory system of any bloodhound was never as keen as the pond king’s. He knows the birds have dropped a cicada. He moves like a living torpedo. His scales flash as he turns and slips through the water. His mouth gapes wide as he breaks the surface drawing everything in giving him the appearance of a whirlpool. There’s a soft splash and in an instant the cicada is taken. The pond king turns once more to the base of the tree on the edge of the water and the twisted roots which are his castle.

Arrival Of The Cedar Waxwings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Cedar Waxwings 61620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I allowed the big blue truck to coast to a stop on the side of the interstate highway just outside of Summersville West Virginia. The temptation to try and get a few shots of the large pond fed by Muddelty Creek has finally gotten the best of me. I rolled down the passenger side window and looked out at graceful willows as they peered into their own reflections on the water. Light showers disturb the surface of the pond just enough to give the reflections a mystical feel. At times it seems like the other world is just beyond the water in some dream that’s almost tangible. It was at that moment of deep imagination that movement recalled my presence of mind back to the corporeal landscape. They moved in unison while suspended between heaven and earth and lit in the old snag. They didn’t need to vocalize or receive directions from ground control to coordinate their synchronized maneuvers bit instead relied upon the instinctive knowledge of each other. They both just stopped on the dead limbs as if drawn in by a magnet. I extended the lens and held their semblance in my lens. A moment of time held in both my memory and in my camera. But the desire to ebb just a little closer was my downfall and with the opening of the truck’s door they vanished as suddenly as they arrived.

The Morning Rise

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Silver Spotted Skipper 61520a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The widening solar arc will soon reach zenith marking a change in seasons. The days of the full sun are at hand. The tiny Skipper butterfly rests easy in the shade as the sunbeam steadily ebbs closer. Like the ticking of a clock light flows through the porus canopy until it caresses the tiny wings. In response the wings slowly begain to pump distributing life giving warmth throughout the tiny body. The little Skipper suddenly explodes into the air flashing it colors as your flies. Then as I look around my forest I see them all as they wake from their slumber.

They all go to work without any delay. The wild hydrangea has finally bloomed and it’s their task to sip the nectar and spread the pollen.

Treasures In The Grass

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Treasures In The Grass 6220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Life in the meadow is rich and full. The wind softly shakes the grass and carries the scent of the pollen. The tiny mason bee zeros in on the source. A Yarrow plant. Her tiny wings angle slightly and she heads for the plant. She’s already loaded heavy but she’s not at her limit yet. She works each little bloom like a master. It takes only a few minuets to completely sweep every grain of pollen and pack her legs to the max. The load doesn’t slow her down. Her movements are fluid as she lifts into the air and carries her golden treasure back to the nest. Her body shines like an emerald in the sun. A jewel surrounded by golden dust and a living treasure in the grass.
