The Soft Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Soft Morning 11620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The tires on my big blue truck drone out a hum as I leave my beloved mountain for my morning commute. Mid January blesses my life with the morning sun and occasional blue sky broken by the remnants of a passing storm. A slightly opened sideglass allows the crisp morning air to mix with heat coming from the dashboard. The aroma of my morning coffee is stirred up by the circulating air. The river is up slightly from the rain but not so much as to be a threat as I ease off of the road. The sun hasn’t quite topped the mountains but broadcasts it’s light over the ridge giving the illusion of a double sunrise. I paused the playback coming from the speakers in the cab and opened the door. In spite of bright morning a cold wind is spilling over the hills and racing across the three rivers but I don’t really care. All I need at this moment is light, the mountains and river and a little peace of mind. The chill of the wind eventually drives me back into the warmth of the truck and a sip of hot coffee. Like the river, time keeps flowing and drawing me forward to my next destination.

Letting Summer Out For A While

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Honeybee And Ironweed 83019” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Outside my window is cold and wet. The recent snow only lasted long enough to delay travel and make everything muddy. So I turned to the window in my hand. The one that shows the past and allows me to chose the season that wish to view. I scrolled through the days, weeks and months that were stored in the little black time machine in my hand until I found the one that made me feel warm. As I gaze into the image I can hear the buzz of tiny wings grooming each purple blossom and filling the air with a sweet aroma. Waves of heat emanate from the nearby parking lot as large soaring birds catch the thermals rising from the city. As I mentally step through the window the world around me becomes green and alive and for a few moments it’s Sumner again. The howling winds of winter are replaced with music coming from the open windows of the passing cars. I can feel the soft grass tickle my sandaled feet as approach the purple bloom in an attempt to observe the honeybee at work. She pays no attention to the giant hovering over her as she works. I carefully move the lens into place and “bottle up” the time so that on a cold winter day like today I can let Summer out to play for just a little while.

Seeking Solitude On A Winter Day

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image “The Seeker 2”. Unlike most of the photos on my blog this one is not for sale but plenty of the other photos on my blog are. If you see something that you like just follow the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Cool air fills the forest as a light mist settles across the land. Small streams form pushing the fallen leaves out of way. The rain settles out and the sun breaks through the clouds for a little while. It’s a great opportunity to get out on a pathway and leave the artificial life of T.V., internet and radio behind. The fragrance of the moss gently wafts from the wet ground and the birds fill the forest with happy chirps. On this trip they’re the only companions. In 9 weeks give or take the forest will slowly begin to open sleepy eyes. I’ve already seen a few green leaves peeking through the leaf litter like a small child opening one eye and then playing possum. They’ll pop up for a little while and then go back to sleep in the deep cold of February. One of them looks like Solomon’s Seal but I haven’t really checked it close yet. Last year’s fern fronds are still green and sprawled across their domain. Some of them are perched on top of rotten stumps and others cling to the top of large stones along with the moss. The rain begins to drizzle again but the mountain offers plenty of cover in the form of rocky ledges with shallow caves at the base. You can sit under them and just listen to rain. The tranquility of the solitude brings peace and the peace is fulfilling.

Life-Time

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Misty Forest 121619” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Water gently falls from the the bare twigs striking the sparse leaves. Deep within the mists the sound of hooves cautiously moving through the bush echoes up from the hollow below. The air is full of random chirps from the various little birds. I can also hear the dull thud of the local Pileated Woodpecker as he probes the old snag that’s just out of sight. The mists have stirred up the smell of the moss and it occasionally wafts my direction in the light breeze.

In my youth I would sit for hours on a rock ledge and immerse myself in the surrounding forest. In an age when the only wireless communication was a two way radio and reality wasn’t virtual time belonged to the experiencer.

It makes me question the definition of a lifetime. Is it a measure of quantity or quality? Is ten centuries of existence in a box a lifetime or is life-time the time spent experiencing creation?

The laughter of the woodpecker rings out as I contemplated my place in creation and I realized that his jovial outlook on life is tied to the fact that woodpeckers never invented a clock to divide their lives between existence and living.

An Encounter With A Bashful Prince

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Bashful Prince” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

There’s just enough of a drizzle to call it rain as I park the big blue truck in the middle of the quiet country lane. I saw a small group of deer on the edge of the forest about a half of a mile back as they bounded into the bushes. I can’t really blame them for being nervous about the approaching human. It’s only been a week since the close of gun season. Even though I’m in a state park with no hunting it’s bordered by private land and the deer will range both properties. I did however suppose that if I could get in the park zone that they might be a little more at ease. I was only a a couple of hundred yards inside the entrance when I spotted him in tawwhe distance. He’s young but he is a buck. Typically, the bucks will stay off to themselves and the does will stay with the herd. His first set of buttons may not have even broken through his scalp this year. He paid little attention the truck as I eased closer. Deer see moving vehicles as just another herd animal. If you’re not moving too fast it will keep track of where you are and what you’re doing but otherwise not consider you a threat. I drifted in a little closer as the buck continued to feed on the lichens and grasses under the trees. Occasionally he would put a tree between us as if it was hiding him. Then he would get curious about the truck and work his way closer again. I almost felt like he was playing a game with me. I had to wonder if he was coming in close and then jumping back to see if the truck was going to chase him. Finally he couldn’t take it anymore and decided that his best option was to make a break for the denser woods on the opposite side of the road. He crossed both lanes in a single leap and was gone.

He’s the young bashful prince of these woods today but in a few short seasons he’s going to be a huge dominant buck and the king of the park.
