Quiet Moments

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “A Quiet Moment On The Gauley River”and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck takes me to the meeting of the three rivers. I was drawn to spot below the old trestle bridge where I found the branch submerged with only the base breaking the surface. It made me think of a tiny wooden island in sea of disturbance. It was the one thing that was stationary. It reminded me that when life is tumultuous we need to find that one thing that we can focus on in order to become centered.

In today’s world the fight for our attention us everywhere. All of those ads and breaking news stories along with the robo calls and even texts as well as social media create little ripples in our lives. It’s necessary from time time to unplug and focus on the serene so we can find our center.

Encounter With A Living Sunset

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Living Sunset” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The late summer brings golden rays to the Appalachian Mountains. With the passing of the dog days of summer the cooler days invite us to spend less time inside and more time enjoying God’s creation. The bright pinkish purple of the Ironweed sprinkled in with green forest signals that the seasonal changes are right around the corner. I paused a moment to enjoy some fresh air as I approached the big blue truck. It was the movement that first caught my eye as yet another monarch butterfly crossed my path. The lack of dark spots on the hind wings tells me that this one is a female. She flits and floats about from plant to plant sampling each bloom. Her colors are so rich and bright that it brings to mind the image of a sunset that has come to life. She isn’t bashful and seems to be quite at ease in the lens as she climbs around on the purple blooms trying out different poses for the benevolent giant who stands holding a camera just inches away from the delicate wings. Each pose seemed to be better than the last one and I lost track of the time as I continued to snap photo after photo. When she had had enough she made one last flip into the air and simply sailed away in a single moment. Knowing that she was on her to places where I couldn’t follow I resumed my path to the big blue truck and headed for home with a living sunset in my lens.

On The Sunny Side Of The Mountain

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “On The Sunny Side Of The Mountain” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

A warm breeze cascading down Panther Mountain brings the sweet scent of Appalachian wildflowers as I rolled down the window of the big blue truck. I’m on a little bit of a scouting mission but I’m taking time to visually explore everything on the edge of the road. The road over Panther Mountain is a public road but there’s places where it’s a road in name only.

The road over Panther Mountain as seen through the dirty windshield of the big blue truck.

Most people use ATVs to travel this road and I only take my truck part of the way up. I have never been the entire length of the road.

As I watch the left edge of the road the Tiger Swallowtail in tonight’s feature image was the first thing that caught my eye. It paid no more attention to the truck than it would a large rock in the middle of the road. It’s whole world was just sunshine and nectar. I paused for several minutes and watched it feed. Then I noticed another and another and then a fourth one. The road was lined with butterflies. None of them seemed care about the giant idling his way up the mountain. They only seemed to care about what was actually in their control.

I have come to understand that the secret to peace of mind is not expending mental and emotional energy on things that are beyond our control. I’m not really suggesting that we should be unprepared but that we don’t dwell on the negative. If we have the things that are actually in our control in order then if the unforseen happens we’ll be in better shape to deal with it.

I raised the lens and snapped a picture to help remind me of the lesson the Tiger Swallowtail had for me and continued to ease on the gravel road towards my goal.

Simple Joy In Sunshine

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Simple Joy In Sunshine” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Yellow wings float by on warm breezes.

Happy chirps call out from the hidden branches overhead.

Splashing in the distance as fins break the surface and return to the deep.

The feeling of cool grass on bare feet.

Ice cream and frozen lemonade shared with a friend.

Schedule free days and peaceful moments.

These are the simple joys of sunny days and treasures for the soul.

Changing Seasons And Fleeting Moments

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Canadian Goose 71719” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

“Time waits for No one” as the old saying goes. It seems like yesterday that I was so excited to see days begin to lengthen. I was ready to greet the spring flowers with open arms. But little by little the sun hangs his sleepy head earlier than yesterday. I woke to find yellow leaves loosely scattered throughout my lawn last week. They are the first to fortell of cooler days ahead. I’ll be welcoming the change with a bitter smile. I love the cooler days of late August and September with their low humidity and gentle breezes but it always leaves me wishing that the transition was slower. I have a strong urge to savor the next few weeks. Tomorrow we’ll see the return of the big yellow bus and the tiny feet that stand at end of each driveway. Some will wait with excitement about seeing their friends while others will have trepidation concerning the long hours away from home.

I have already seen the familiar V formation crossing the sky as this year’s brood of geese train for the marathon flights in their future.

But we don’t live in the past or the future. We have only this fleeting moment that we call life. Blink and moment is gone. Look too far ahead and the moment will slip by and fade away out of reach.

When I noticed the goose in tonight’s feature image I watched her closely. People were tossing food into the river and she was aggressively going after it. But every so often a piece would be missed and float downstream. If she chased the one she missed the others would get what was currently being offered. She would miss the current blessing. As I watched her I have struck by the thought of how man opportunities we might miss while trying to recover the past.

Our lifetimes are only what we have in the moment and this moment is so easy to lose. Don’t lose it because you were chasing the one that passed.
