Changing Seasons And Fleeting Moments

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Canadian Goose 71719” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

“Time waits for No one” as the old saying goes. It seems like yesterday that I was so excited to see days begin to lengthen. I was ready to greet the spring flowers with open arms. But little by little the sun hangs his sleepy head earlier than yesterday. I woke to find yellow leaves loosely scattered throughout my lawn last week. They are the first to fortell of cooler days ahead. I’ll be welcoming the change with a bitter smile. I love the cooler days of late August and September with their low humidity and gentle breezes but it always leaves me wishing that the transition was slower. I have a strong urge to savor the next few weeks. Tomorrow we’ll see the return of the big yellow bus and the tiny feet that stand at end of each driveway. Some will wait with excitement about seeing their friends while others will have trepidation concerning the long hours away from home.

I have already seen the familiar V formation crossing the sky as this year’s brood of geese train for the marathon flights in their future.

But we don’t live in the past or the future. We have only this fleeting moment that we call life. Blink and moment is gone. Look too far ahead and the moment will slip by and fade away out of reach.

When I noticed the goose in tonight’s feature image I watched her closely. People were tossing food into the river and she was aggressively going after it. But every so often a piece would be missed and float downstream. If she chased the one she missed the others would get what was currently being offered. She would miss the current blessing. As I watched her I have struck by the thought of how man opportunities we might miss while trying to recover the past.

Our lifetimes are only what we have in the moment and this moment is so easy to lose. Don’t lose it because you were chasing the one that passed.

Things Are Just Ducky #2

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “George &Ralph In The Sun” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article. All of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase.

George and Ralph waddled up out of the puddle to warm themselves in the sun a bit. They noticed that their neighbors, the geese, had just gotten home from a foraging excursion out in the forest.

Papa Goose is very tall!

George happens to notice how tall Papa Goose is. “Y’know Ralph, Papa Goose is very tall.” George comments. “So.” Was Ralph’s only reply. “Well, he’s also pretty successful and people say it’s easier to be successful if you’re tall.” George continued as he held out his short duck leg for emphasis. Ralph snickers a bit and says, “Well, it’s pretty obvious that a duck will never be as tall as a Goose.” George thought for a few minutes and stretched himself out as tall as he could make himself while emulating Papa Goose as best as could. “Maybe not. But I can be as tall as I am.”

George stands as tall as he can.

Ralph hid his face in embarrassment at his friend’s antics. “We’re ducks and we have our place on the lake and it’s not for us to be tall.” He said. But George didn’t listen. He continued to reach for his goal and while he never got as tall as Papa Goose he was in fact the most successful duck on the lake. But it wasn’t because he was tall. It was because he was dedicated to his goal and he didn’t give up when Ralph thought it was impossible.

Tonight’s story was inspired in part when the duck that I’ve named George really did look straight at the Goose pictured and tried to emulate the Goose.

Solitude And Focus

There are times when a person just needs a little solitude. When the world around you is full of flashing signs and blaring music and distractions of every kind. We all have those moments when the mental clutter just needs to be pushed back and space needs to be given for focusing on one thing at a time. We need to just let our minds drift for a little while like a bird on the lake. He’s not trapped in the water. He can leave at time of his choosing. He can paddle around and go to any part of the water or land that he wants. He’s not overtaken by winds or currents but instead he rides them. He works in harmony with creation and achieves what is needed. And he rests when it’s time. He is at peace with his environment as God intended. Solitude isn’t really about being antisocial or introverted. It’s about focus. It’s intended to be a limited time for mental and emotional recharge. We exercise our bodies to grow stronger and have more endurance but any successful athletes will tell you that it’s during the resting cycle that the strength manifests. Our minds and spirits are the same way. We need a resting state to fully benefit from the stimulation we experience in daily life.

Early Morning Peacefulness

Drifting silently among the willow sprouts she comes. The heavy fog keeps her hidden from the outside world. Her only goal is to enjoy some quiet time and listen for the voice of God as He speaks peace to her soul. It’s in the early morning hours that she gathers her strength and prepares for the day ahead. She is thankful for the new day and her moment of being at rest.
