The Melting Sky And Late Night Philosophy Discussions.

What is real? Are there levels of reality? What is the universe made of and what does it hang on? These are the late night questions of a group of college friends. Maybe it was the magic formula of young minds, late nights and a sense of wonderment but the occasional break between studies often brewed conversations about things like Schrodinger’s cat and the double slit expiriment. Eventually someone would would point out that observation affects the outcome of the experiment and then the wild theories game was on. Reality would melt like a watercolor painting in the rain.

I suppose that’s where my appreciation for surrealism came from. If the expectations of a physicist could make a photon veer towards the left or right then perhaps the whole nature of the universe was subject to the expectations of those who observe it. What if Schrodinger subconsciously chooses the fate of his cat. It kinda makes since until you notice that you haven’t won the Powerball jackpot yet. ( Tho obvious answer being that it’s because everyone else is also expecting and we all cancel each other out until enough of us forget to expect and someone in Indiana wins. 😉 )

So how did I make the sky melt for tonight’s feature image? Well, I accidentally proved that observation doesn’t really affect the outcome of the experiment. Basically, I killed Schrodinger’s cat. The original intention was to get a panoramic view of the clouds reflecting on the Kanawha River. However, the sensors that detect how the camera is oriented became confused and stitched the image vertically instead of horizontally. The ripples on the water became elongated and the whole image took on the melting feel. I cleaned up the image a bit and liked the outcome so I kept it. It kinda reminds me of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. I have tried but have never been to duplicate the effect consistently. ( Again disproving the active observation theory.)

For now I’ll have to be satisfied with just this one unique image in my collection and maintain my position that there is order to the universe and that order is occasionally disrupted.

A Life That Works

The ant is a symbol of strength, work ethics and community. The parable of the Grasshopper and the ant teaches us to work hard and always put something aside for hard times. (Side note, in the original version the Grasshopper dies. It’s my understanding that the lesson is no longer taught that way. Which is sad because the other side of the lesson was that if you don’t take responsibility for your own life nobody else will. But, I digress. ) When I was a kid I marveled at how the ant could work so tirelessly. Cutting leaves and collecting food for long hours. Digging endless tunnels and closing them up again with machine like resilience. As a young man I could hold my own but after a while enthusiasm becomes, well, depleted. I had the energy to work for 12 or even 16 hours per day and still have a little fun before going to bed and doing it all over again but there was no joy in my labor. I began to worry about becoming lazy and falling to fate of the Grasshopper. It wasn’t until I started to gain the perspective of experience that I figured out the ant’s secret. The ant wasn’t just working. It was living it’s purpose. It’s work was far more than just labor. It was an expression of joy. All of that cutting, lifting and digging was an avenue of pleasure. The ant was custom made for the life it lives.

We as humans have a more complex system than that of the ants but the principal of finding and living in your purpose is the same. We might not all be able to earn a living at that purpose but being able to devote a certain portion of the day doing whatever it is that makes you feel like the best version of yourself will help to elevate your overall life experience. It’s the difference between a working life and a life that works.

Encounter With A Blue Dancer

Summer days were made for enjoying the sunshine. It’s in our nature to want to take part in the simple pleasures that come with Summer.

As I sat down at the outside break table on my day job a living sapphire slipped across my field of vision. The blue dancer lived up to her name as she flew through the yard. Her rhythmic gymnastics in the air rivaled anything seen on stage. As a child dragonflies held an air of something magical happening before my very eyes. In all the books and websites about fossils is a picture of dragonfly with a wingspan of around two feet! As impressive as the size is the fossils that I’ve seen give no insight as to the amazing colors that modern day dragonflies show. Greens and blues and even bright red! They all seem to shine and glimmer in the light.

The blue dancer paused only for a moment on the leaf before the music that was bound up on spirit called her back into the air. I enjoyed the performance for a few minutes and soon my time in the sun was up. The blue dancer seemed to escort me back to the door as left. She’s still around. I’ve seen her almost every day since performing her routine in the sun.

Morning Commute

The early morning sun peeks over the ridge and warms the grass near the Kanawha River. Young eyes, being new to the world blink open and look on in wonderment at all of creation. Mother Goose gathers her brood and leads them down into the water. School is in session and it’s time to practice swimming in a line. A few of the goslings struggle with being distracted. A bug swims past and tempts a little one into the chase. Mother Goose easily out flanks the game player and nudges him back in line. He’s got to stay with the flock or he could fall prey to the “river wolves” a name given to the local muskie population which are known to snatch a stray. But as a group the large fish sees the flock as one big animal on the surface. The family of geese make it to the rocks without incident. There they soak in the sunshine and strengthen powerful wings that will soon carry them hundreds of miles away from the chill of winter. Mother Goose shows some concerns about the big blue truck parked on the edge of water and the strange two legged creature with one eye focused on her brood. So, not being one who wants to upset Mother Goose I lowered my lens and left them to there lessons. Perhaps I’ll be passing by when they are flying in their V formation this Fall.

Forage Friday #18. Autumn Olive, The Forbidden Fruit

Autumn Olive 7310 — Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image was taken specifically for Forage Friday and has been given the title “Autumn Olive 7319”. All of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Autumn Olive was first brought into North America in 1830 as an ornamental plant and in the 1950s when wildlife habitat was a concern Autumn Olive was recommended by the government as a choice plant to fill that need. And for a good reason too. This shrub prefers soil that is low quality and actually helps to revitalize fertility. The berries are favored by game birds like quail. And they spread the seeds.

The fruit is also edible for humans. It’s tart but sweet and used to make jams. I have eaten them raw as a trail snack but in researching for this article I learned that they are used by some people as a tomato substitute. I even noticed that the internet provides an Autumn Olive ketchup recipe. The fruit is known to be rich in lycopene as is tomatoes. I’ll leave the thrill of discovery up to reader. It won’t be hard because those who are Autumn Olive advocates are eager to share knowledge.

I have stated in the title that Autumn Olive was a forbidden fruit. The plant it highly competitive and shortly after recommending it as a good conservation shrub the government jerked away it’s endorsement and denounced Autumn Olive as an invader. I suppose that it’s true. Autumn Olive is very disease and pest resistant as well as a prolific reproducer. Many of native shrubs that compete for its niche are just squeezed out. It’s even illegal to buy or sell in some places. However, if it’s already wild in your area then don’t let it go to waste. And don’t be fooled by the name Autumn Olive. Tonight’s feature image was taken on July 3rd and the berries are already turning red.
