Morning rain leaves the landscape all fresh and new. The wind and thunder lasted only for a night and softened out into drizzle as the sun peeks over the ridge. Hummingbirds absolutely love the jewelweed and so I let it have as much of the forest edges as it wants. It’s also a great place to find other pollinators and so I wasn’t really surprised at the little Tachinid Fly that photo bombed my shot of the water droplets hanging like little crystal balls from the leaves. Shooting insects with my long lens is like target practice for me so I made the little guy the subject of the photos. What did surprise me was his response to the seed pod forming on the left side of the image. He must have been curious about the odd shaped “bug” that was sharing his perch. He just kept looking at it and cooking his head sideways like a puppy with a new toy. He would step foreword a bit and back away and just look at it waiting for a response. In my imaginations I think that he was trying to make friends with it. I do imagin that being a fly is a lonely life and so no opportunity to make a friend would be ignored. It didn’t matter to the little fly that his new friend seemed rather dull of mind and slow to move. All he needed was a good listener and that’s just what he found. I left him alone to spend his morning telling stories and moved to the next photo.
