Looking For A New Friend

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Looking For A Friend 83121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Morning rain leaves the landscape all fresh and new. The wind and thunder lasted only for a night and softened out into drizzle as the sun peeks over the ridge. Hummingbirds absolutely love the jewelweed and so I let it have as much of the forest edges as it wants. It’s also a great place to find other pollinators and so I wasn’t really surprised at the little Tachinid Fly that photo bombed my shot of the water droplets hanging like little crystal balls from the leaves. Shooting insects with my long lens is like target practice for me so I made the little guy the subject of the photos. What did surprise me was his response to the seed pod forming on the left side of the image. He must have been curious about the odd shaped “bug” that was sharing his perch. He just kept looking at it and cooking his head sideways like a puppy with a new toy. He would step foreword a bit and back away and just look at it waiting for a response. In my imaginations I think that he was trying to make friends with it. I do imagin that being a fly is a lonely life and so no opportunity to make a friend would be ignored. It didn’t matter to the little fly that his new friend seemed rather dull of mind and slow to move. All he needed was a good listener and that’s just what he found. I left him alone to spend his morning telling stories and moved to the next photo.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Summer Throwback To A Day With A Bumblebee

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bumblebee And Jewelweed 9319” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The slight sweet scent of multiple wildflowers lingers on the warm breeze as I meander along the edge of my forest. I live in an area known to be populated by rattlesnakes so I tread lightly and listen for the tell tale buzz that would let me know I’m not alone. I have lived in the area since the early 90s and only spotted a handful of rattlesnakes but they are definitely around. I don’t fear them but it’s wise to treat the one you didn’t see with respect. Eventually I heard a buzz but it wasn’t a snake. It was a busy little bumblebee lazily floating from flower to flower collecting pollen and nectar for her bread. She loves the Jewelweed and crawls right up into the flower as deep as she can often disappearing completely.

It took me a long time to get comfortable with any kind of bee after a bad experience with the European Bald Face Hornet as a young child. There was an empty wash tub upside down near the barn and I jumped on it. It was rusted out my foot went through the bottom and right into the nest. Hundreds of angry little warriors covered my foot and lower leg but fortunately couldn’t sting through the thick clothes if that era. However, the fear stuck with me up into adulthood. By facing my fear and forcing myself to get closer to them I can now even tolerate that black hornet and allow the wasps to get close.

The bumblebee is a great mom but a lousy business partner. She only makes enough honey and bee bread for her brood. No extra for the human who refused to clear out the weeds she feeds on. But that’s ok as long as she visits my garden too.

I snapped a few shots of her as she went about her chores and eventually left her to the tasks at hand.

The Richness Of An Appalachian Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Pipevine Swallowtail And Moonflower” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Softly floating from place to place the butterfly explores each bloom searching for the one that has the sweetest rewards. The late summer brings the Moonflower and every little twig becomes a bloom. Off in the distance a Ruby Throated Hummingbird darts skillfully through the underbrush as he carries out the same quest. I turned around to focus but he eludes my lens with ease and disappears back into the forest. The crow in top branches of a snag finds this amusing and cackles in a mocking tone. Bumblebees fly in lazy S shaped patterns and crawl into the last of Pale Jewelweed that dangles from dew kissed leaves. They shake the plant as they dig their way into bloom and send a cascade of droplets to forest floor.

Life In The Moment

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Life In The Moment” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Most of what I capture in the lens is a fraction of a second. Working with such tight tolerances has given me an appreciation for how fluid a moment is. It takes less than one second for the bumblebee to disappear inside of the flower and change the entire scene. It also takes less than one second for the bumblebee to drop out of the flower and become airborne. Again changing the scene. Light changes, wind moves the subjects and with wildlife there’s a pretty good chance that the subject will be spooked and run away. All of this forces us to see the moment and react before it’s lost forever. That’s going to happen and it’s going to happen often. Action is always faster than reaction. But on the other side of this paradox is the fact that a missed moment is an event that is also constantly changing. If we become mentally trapped by the lost opportunity we’ll miss the one that follows. The truth is that it takes a lot of missed shots to learn the patterns and anticipate the next opportunity. I have come to understand that this is a pattern repeats itself in almost every aspect of life. It takes a lot of failure to learn the patterns and recognize the next opportunity in time to be ready for it. And, if you mess up don’t get discouraged because that moment will soon pass too.

Letting The Light In

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Pipevine Swallowtail In The Late Summer Sun” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

A golden ray of sunshine sweeps across the edge of the Appalachian forest. An older Pipevine Swallowtail angles herself to catch as much of this warmth as it can. Her beautiful wings wings are worn and tattered from predator encounters. She seems to be sstruggling pull her body to just the right spot as the last shadow fades away. Oh, but once the light hits her wings things change drastically. Her movement becomes fluid and with shivering wings she suddenly becomes airborne. She flutters and soars with every bit of the grace and agility that she’s always had. All it took to renew her strength was to let the light in.
