The Game Of Chase

As a youth I greatly enjoyed the stories written by Pat McManus. And one of my favorites was the one where he asked who was responsible for issuing army boots to squirrels. Now it’s been more than 30 years since I sat in a classroom not doing schoolwork but learning about the person I would become so I don’t remember Pat’s story verbatim. However, we was correct about them being the noisiest creatures in the woods. Typically, I drift along in my big blue truck looking for whatever catches my eye to photograph. The day I took the photo in tonight’s Feature Image I had an escort. Or perhaps he was a competitor because he seemed to be racing me. In all honesty I was barely going faster than idle speed but the little squirrel stayed even with the truck and when I allowed him to get out ahead of me he would stop and wait. Finally I caught him in enough of a clearing to get a few pictures. In what could only be described as “antics” the squirrel rushed out ahead and stopped. When he saw that the truck hadn’t moved he ran back and began barking and fussing for attention then ran out again. Eventually he figured out that I was going to chase him and he got comfortable on the log. He’d flick his tail at me a few times and circle one of trees in a game of peekaboo but always come back to this spot and watch for a reaction. At some point he was joined by another of his kind and so with a new playmate that was more interactive he took his game of chase to the treetops.
