Waiting For Perfection

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Waiting For Perfection 61520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

“Oh the waiting is the hardest part.” – Tom Petty

The warm June sun stirs the insects and my guardian barn swallows patrol the yard. With excellent timing they overtake the horseflies making it a little more comfortable to be outside. From my office window I noticed the crimson specks starting to appear on the edge of the forest. Last year the birds got most of my black raspberries but I can’t really be upset since they got most of the biting pests too. But now I enter a phase that’s a bit like torment. I have to wait for the berries to be ripe.

As I was growing up warm brambles ( blackberry, raspberry, wineberry and Logan berry were a true joy on a hot day. We would either work or play in the hot sun but in the times when you could reach one before the birds it was a thirst quencher.

Right now I see several that are just starting to turn while others are stii white almost. But these canes are only the first to turn. I have others that are still green. Picking Brambles is a lesson in having patience. The careless with scars and torn clothing. But it’s easy to have patience while picking. It’s getting to harvest that gives me the fits. After all, the waiting is the hardest part.

Things Are Just Ducky #12 Father’s Day

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Walking With Dad 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article

George glided in with his stretched as wide as he could make then. The duck in the grass below looked up and seemed to smile a little wider after seeing George. The two ducks greeted each other warmly and began to walk together along the path. At first they chattered excitedly catching up with each other’s lives but as they walked their conversation because more direct. The older duck began to instruct George about what was good to eat in the area and how to avoid the excited dogs that come here sometimes. The conversation was very important to George because this was his dad. The more George’s dad taught the greater the twinkle in his eyes flashed. George just took it all in and listened in earnest as he actually learned new things. What’s more is that George learned that day that Fathers don’t just like to teach but that it’s how his dad expressed his love for his son. All those hours and hours of lectures when George was growing up wasn’t just for the sake of showing George what he’d done wrong but the love and dedication of a father trying to impart the best of himself into his son. And furthermore George learned that his dad never felt more fulfilled than when he listened.

Tonight’s post is dedicated to the best teachers I ever had. My dad.

Forage Friday #62 Grass

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Grass On Pond 61620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Forage Friday is only intended to be a conversation starter and all of the information is presented as trivia. Please remember to do further research and be positive about identifying any wild edible plants. Any herbalism discussed in the article is also presented as trivia and should not be mistaken for an endorsement of treatment.

That’s right. Tonight’s Forage Friday post is about the stuff that grows on your lawn. Now it should go without saying that if you spray your lawn with chemicals then it’s not considered safe for consumption. The same goes for public parks and commercial property. In fact, to be absolutely clear I only advocate foraging your own property or private property that you have permission to forage.

I was initially shocked to learn that normal grass produced edible grain. I laughed out loud at the thoughts of grazing like a cow. In those days the internet was science fiction and I actually blew quite a lot of money at book stores. Ironically, I was leafing through a new acquisition on primitive survival at a Chinese restaurant and eating bamboo shoots at the precise moment when saw the section on foraging grass. My young mind didn’t make the connection that bamboo was a type of grass right away. Okay, but bamboo is a special grass right? Well, as it turns out yes and no. Not all grass is going yield nutrition and in fact the stuff on our lawns is probably not going to be the best forage. In addition, I’m told that all native North American grasses are nontoxic but that several non-native varieties are toxic. And there are entire scientific disciplines based on learning how to identify different types of grass. In fact I am unsure about the identity of the grass in tonight’s post.

Presuming that it is an edible variety it’s still in flower and not ready for harvest. Once the fruit ripens we can strip the seed from the stem and beat it free of the chaff. Tossing it up into the air slightly and allowing the Breeze to carry away the papery part is called winnowing.

The seed can then be ground into flour.

In case you haven’t guessed this is one of the ones I only have theoretical knowledge of. So please pay attention to the disclaimer and seek out someone who is more experienced on this subject. One of my favorite resources is Green Dean and the link takes you to his article about grass .

The Value of Now

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Old Barn 52620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Somewhere beyond the dust of yesterday and just ahead of tomorrow’s dream fulfilled is that moment of now. Now is a quality that’s as vaporous as shadow. This
Intangible thing that slips through our fingers and becomes a phantom of memory before our eyes. And yet, while it remains it’s all we have to forge the future from. If we stare too long into the phantom’s eyes of regret then the now that is yet to be is wasted as well. Learn from yesterday but let it slip away to whatever destiny history has prepared so that no moment is wasted. The more scarce something is then the greater it is valued. If I told you that you had only one day to live what would you regret leaving unsaid, unfinished or untouched? Whatever those things are those are where we should be investing our now before another phantom haunts our memories.

Arrival Of The Cedar Waxwings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Cedar Waxwings 61620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I allowed the big blue truck to coast to a stop on the side of the interstate highway just outside of Summersville West Virginia. The temptation to try and get a few shots of the large pond fed by Muddelty Creek has finally gotten the best of me. I rolled down the passenger side window and looked out at graceful willows as they peered into their own reflections on the water. Light showers disturb the surface of the pond just enough to give the reflections a mystical feel. At times it seems like the other world is just beyond the water in some dream that’s almost tangible. It was at that moment of deep imagination that movement recalled my presence of mind back to the corporeal landscape. They moved in unison while suspended between heaven and earth and lit in the old snag. They didn’t need to vocalize or receive directions from ground control to coordinate their synchronized maneuvers bit instead relied upon the instinctive knowledge of each other. They both just stopped on the dead limbs as if drawn in by a magnet. I extended the lens and held their semblance in my lens. A moment of time held in both my memory and in my camera. But the desire to ebb just a little closer was my downfall and with the opening of the truck’s door they vanished as suddenly as they arrived.
