Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Church 100421bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The morning is soft and gentle as the sunshine begins to push back the clouds and smile on the three rivers. A few days ago I lost all connections to the outside world and had to make an important call. So this is the closest spot where I can both get a good strong signal and sit comfortably in my truck to make calls.

I’m not a member of the church in photo but I am attracted to the building. Lately I’ve thought long and hard about what constitutes “a church”. The best definition I can think of is where two or more are gathered. The places where I like to go are often referred to as “God’s country”. Little out of the way places where I can sit Peacefully and have a conversation without words. I’ve not had a “home church” for a long time. There was no drama or divisions that caused this but the pastor passed away and the congregation dispersed into the world. And yet at the same time I do feel that connection with friends and family. Sometimes just a stranger that I bump into. One of the last things my pastor said to me was that God wanted a church without walls. By this I think he meant that church isn’t a building or a day of the week or an organization but the unity of believers. So what is the gathering? It’s when we all focus on Christ in benevolence for each other and those who are seeking.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #127 Milkweed pods

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Milkweed Pod 1009a” and was taken specifically for Forage Friday. All photos found on my website are my original work unless otherwise specified and are available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice. As an additional warning, milkweed does contain toxins that may have an adverse effect on your heart. Also, anyone can be allergic to any plants so if you choose to try a new plant please try very small amounts first and monitor yourself for adverse reactions. Please review the Universal Edibility Test provided by Backpacker in order to get an idea of if you might experience any issues with allergies. If you’re a cardiac patient then you should probably avoid this one.

There are few better things to enjoy other than a patch of milkweed being visited by monarch butterflies. I’ve always enjoyed milkweed as a source of butterflies and bees but I recently learned that if they’re processed right the young pods are not only edible but frequently enjoyed by a wide variety of people. In the spirit of full disclosure I haven’t tried them myself but they come with such wonderful reviews that it’s definitely on my list of things to try. I’m going to advise one more time that you pay close attention to the disclaimer at the top of the page and always check with multiple sources. Keep in mind that some people are going to be more sensitive to a plant than others. I recently saw a post on social media from a person who was knowledgeable and experienced in foraging wild mushrooms but the first time she tried hen of the woods she had a bad allergic reaction to it. Hen of the woods is a mushroom that’s extremely popular with people who forage and even brings top dollar in high end restaurants so it was a huge surprise for the person who got sick from it. So a little extra caution is always OK for the first time.

Milkweed Pod 100921b

The first thing I learned about foraging milkweed pods was that you want the young pods. How young is something I’m not sure of yet but if you open the pod and see fibers it’s probably too late for foraging. The silky floss inside of a pod that’s too mature will make it stringy and probably not be a pleasant experience for you. However if you find them that are young enough the final product has been described as having the texture of a jalapeño popper without the spice. The inside of a properly cooked milkweed pod should be creamy like the cream cheese in a popper. So age of the pod is important.

Next is that milky sap that gives milkweed its name. Not only has it been used to remove warts in the past but it’s the source of the toxins. Fortunately, the toxins are water soluble and can be removed by boiling the pods. At least 2 changes of water are recommended by most sources but if you’re still seeing cloudy water after the second boiling then a third treatment will be a good idea. I’ll be including a video from an experienced person at the end of the article.

Milkweed Pod 100921d these pods may be too old to be foraged. They are turning dark on the ends wich is a sign that they are starting to dry out.

The flavor of the milkweed Pod at this point is said to be a bit bland but other people say it tastes like a pea Pod. But you can add your spices in the next step. You’ll want an egg to make an egg bath and a four mixture with your spices. Depending on how spicy you want it to be red pepper, paprika, salt and pepper, and Sriracha have all been recommended. Of course you’ll heat up a pan with oil and then brown the pods.

Before I close with the video from my friends at WVPBS I do want to point out that milkweed and the the highly toxic dogbane are in the same family and confusing them could be a fatal mistake. The toxins of dogbane are strong enough to stop your heart! Steffi Hone does an excellent job of showing you the difference between the two as well as a great way to cook the milkweed pods.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Return Of My Cool Weather Friends

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Rose Hips 100121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The light fills the landscape with its ever shifting tones of amber. The breeze is soft and gentle and even though it’s already October I still see an occasional butterfly meandering through whatever patch of nature I inhabit. It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve seen the hummingbirds and yet I’m reluctant to pull down the feeders. I suppose that my tiny summer companions are in Florida by now soaking up the sun and bringing joy to another patron. But I’m not too sad. The little Corlina wrens have returned to find fresh feed in their feeders along with plenty of suet hung out. The roses have faded and in their are full plump hips. Off in the distance I spotted the bright red of one of my cardnials peeking out from the thick bushes and staking out his claim of the best perches in my yard. My mornings are crisp and full of songs as the little ones greet the day. There’s no lack of joyfullness in my mountains. Just different sources of it as the season shifts.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

One The Edge Of Transformation

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “On The Edge Of Transformation 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The crisp morning air brings the scent of rain mingled with the earthy aroma of fallen leaves as I look at back of Kanawha Falls. I’ve learned that the little clump of trees that cling to the rocks below the overflow dam are a pretty accurate indicator of what the season of color will bring. They’re among the first to change color and the more leaves they have when they change, the better the colors will be in the surrounding area. Of course the rain and wavelength of light also play a huge role in the show but these tend to tell us what to expect.

The Appalachian Fall is as beautiful as the Spring. To me it seems like the setting sun leaves a little bit of itself on the leaves every day until they all finally drop. Tones of gold and amber blend together with shades of crimson to make the mountains into a living sunset. If you live in the right spots those colors will reflect into your open window and transform your room as well. And the smell of Fall is more than rain and leaves. The smoke from wood burning stoves and fireplaces drift through the hills and you can easily envision the owner of that harth sipping coffee by the firelight on an early morning. Perhaps as a moment of reflection before putting on those boots and heading out for a long scouting hike to prepare for hunting season. The aroma of Autumn is also the canning of beans and other garden favorites throughout the day and a steaming bowl of chili in the evening. It’s a great day to be alive and living in the mountains.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Cloud Mines

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Reflections 100421a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The sun rises up from it’s cozy place behind the mountains to illuminate the three rivers and wake the clouds. As a child I had the fantasy that in addition to coal our mountains also had cloud mines. Some days the miners dug out the coal and other days they would hit a run of clouds and you could see the clouds that they mined rising from vents in the hills. Sometimes the clouds would get coal dust on them the angels would clean them by making it rain. Once all the gray and black was rinsed away we’d have fluffy white clouds again. To a small child who lives in the Appalachian Mountains this was a real possibility. The whole world is made of wonderment and magic.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
