A Peaceful Stop Near Charlton Heights

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Flow Of Peace” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The morning sun is just above the mountains as the big blue truck finds the wide spot at Charlton Heights. I have always loved the crumbling old stone wall with its little cascade and nearby cave. Today I’ve elected to bring my tripod and attempt a long exposure. I fiddle with the settings a little and eventually get the look that want. Just a few feet away the morning rush traffic zips by. I maintain awareness for safety but otherwise block it out. All I need is a few minutes to lose myself in the flow of stream. The texture of the cut stone and the color of the vegetation. In the few moments of quiet between the sounds of the passing engines I can hear a black capped chickadee calling among the bare twigs. And a sapsucker tapping out his rhythms on a dead branch. I fight against the urge to abandon my responsibility and climb the wall to see what’s up stream but reason overtakes me as I wait for the shutter to close. Folding the tripod away and climbing back into the driver’s seat was the hardest part of my morning. I press the button on the armrest and the passenger window slides down with a whirr and I allow just a little bit more of the peaceful moment to flow into my being and this I carry until I can stop again.

Winter Sanctuary On The Kanawha River

Hello friends!Tonight’s feature image is titled “Winter Sanctuary On The Kanawha River” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The evening sky fades into a velvety blue as I near the end of my daily journey back to my mountain. The glow of the headlights pierce the darkness to reveal the yellow lines that guide me home. As I pass through curves the radiance of sodium lights casts their luminance against the darkness ahead of me. The majestic old inn stands near the river with its Victorian columns and stone walls that surround the grounds welcoming all passers by into sanctuary for the night. As pulled into the parking lot of Methodist church on the other side of town I could still the inviting glow of the lights from the Glen Ferris Inn. The reflection danced on the water with sky in it’s indigo hue. I knew that I had found tonight’s feature image.

Boone Park Sunset 2.17.20

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Boone Park Sunset 21720a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the clouds break from days of rain the new found light lingers on the landscape. The mighty Kanawha River is still swollen with the runoff but otherwise peaceful. I decided to detour down to Daniel Boone Park on my way home to try and find a few ducks or geese to photograph but they were long gone as the dusk crept over the river. Gazing downstream I see the contrails catching the sun and think about how they look like golden threads in the tapestry of the sky. As my eyes follow those lines to the horizon I find the pool of color that erupts from the broken clouds and spills into the river. For me, mid February to mid March is my season of sunsets. It’s when I get the most opportunity to catch God painting the sky with light. As watched the light fade from view through my lens I felt the calling of my big blue truck telling me to hurry back up the pathway before the light is completely gone. As I near the top of the bank I cast my eyes back to river just in time to see the sunset fade into shadows. A few clicks of the remote and Big Blue opens his eyes to light up the way and bring me in. It’s time to return to my mountain and leave the valley of lights behind.

February Sunset Over Marmet Locks.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Sunset Over Marmet Locks 21420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck rolls back to my mountain with unwavering commitment in the evening. The trip requires less use of the headlights every day. For the first time since October I’m blessed to have a beautiful sunset on my journey home. I gently nudge the wheel and move to the side of the road. The only place where there’s enough room to get completely out of the way is across from the Marmet Locks. The series of locks and dams on the Kanawha River make it possible to transport the coal from the mountains to the rest of the world. I arrived at the wide spot just in time to enjoy the sun’s finale for the day as the crimson glow is cast against the rain clouds in a promise of the brighter days ahead.

Things A Little Bird Told Me #3

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Mockingbird 21420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

During a break in the rainy day I decided to step out for a bit of fresh air. The little minstrel that visited me at lunch flew out of the forest and landed on a Multiflora Rose on the edge of the property. He had been singing his little heart out all morning and once more it was time to pay the piper. Today however, I was not caught without a crust of bread and presented my offering in return for his song. The mockingbird flew to roost with his meal and soon returned. Now, you may not know this but when birds aren’t singing they’re listening. And because they fly all over the lands they hear a lot and pick up on a lot of wisdom. The mockingbird looked me over and then I clearly heard him say “Thank you” in the voice of one of my teachers from many years ago. He must have noticed the shocked look on my face because he grinned and noted that he was a mockingbird and the imitation was no challenge at all. I’m sure that I was still blinking when I replied “You’re welcome.”

“Well then”, the mockingbird continued, “because that was such a fine crust of bread I’ll share with you one of the treasures that I’ve learned in my journeys flying to and fro and listing to the best teachers in the land. I leaned in closer as he spoke.

“You’ll never achieve a goal that you don’t believe in.” He said. “To have a dream is one thing but to believe in that enough to take action is another thing. If you believe that something is impossible then you won’t give a full effort and you’ll give up before you succeed.” Then he paused for dramatic effect. “Failure begins with a lack of faith in yourself. You’ll always have what you believe in. If you believe in success you’ll find a way to make it but if you believe in failure then that’s what you’ll create.” Then in typical little bird fashion he spread his wings and took off.

And so I took to heart what the little bird told me and as I looked back at my own life I saw times when his words rang true. And even though certain goals are genuinely out of reach most if the ones that I’ve missed I missed because I gave up too early in my efforts. Likewise, the things that I actually achieved I achieved simply because I knew that there had to have at to make it happen and I kept making small adjustments until they did.

I hope that you are encouraged by the things that the little bird told me. If so then let me know in the comments! 😊
