Pause For A Few Moments Of Tranquility

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pause 52521a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The little alcove stands as a hidden world near the highway. Only a few short steps away the big trucks roar by with tons of wood, coal and steel with nothing but the white line to serve as the barrier. On one side of the line life flies by controlled by the schedules that demand to be met and bright yellow metals. On if which is merely reflective paint adorned by commanding black lines in bold clarity. The living things are bound to machines and hurled towards the goal by controlled explosion within the heart of a mechanical beast. The thunder of wheels echo loudly in a mimicry of living. But on the other side walls of ivy covered stone gaurd the secret sanctuary. Damselflies float in the constant breeze that follows a small stream as it cascades its way through ancient hills and spills into the pool. The drumming of droplets on the earthen floor envelopes everything that flies, floats or stands within the isolated realm of the pool. And those who free themselves from the exploding world of iron and asphalt can sit quietly by the pool and find a moment of tranquility inside the barriers of stone. Breathe deeply and know that you belong here for at least a few moments.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Quiet Time At Cathedral Falls In Spring 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Quiet Time At Cathedral Falls 42821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia is one of our most popular destinations. It’s a small park. So small that you wouldn’t even have enough room to park a dozen vehicles comfortably. The pathway to the base of the Falls is little more than a deer trail but crossing the creek on the wooden foot bridge is like entering another world where the trappings of modern life cannot pass. Oh sure, you still have cell signal. You can sit down on a rock or a log and stay on the internet until you’re battery is completely drained. But your desire to do so is left behind on the other side of that little wooden bridge. You do need a good pair of river shoes. Something that can handle the mud of the trail and the alga on the rocks in the water for safety sake. I chose a pair of completely rubber sandals because the base of the Falls is usually covered by an inch or two of water outside the pool at bottom. A small island of dry gravel provides just enough space to keep my gear dry as I begin to work.

The voice of the Falls is loud enough to push away the noise of the highway less than a hundred yards from the spot but gentle enough to make for a peaceful setting. A constant breeze is drawn down the cliff face by the flowing water and forms a protective shield against the biting insects. A small group of what appears to be cliff swallows glides through the small box canyon and up into a crevasse to disappear inside the rock as nature plays out the lyrics of the hymn Rock Of Ages. The mountain receives them effortlessly and they stay in their shelter for the whole time that I was there.

With the little birds tucked away safe in their hole I turn my attention to the falls and the logs that lay at the bottom.

This has always been a place where you can find your quiet time. The beauty of the mountains seems to focus on this spot. I imagine that people came here to get away from whatever daily stress they had even as far back as the Adena and beyond. I can envision what it looked like before the road and nearby town. The Appalachian Wildflowers were in great abundance and the little creek was teaming with “crawldads” ( crayfish ). A lone Adena sits by the pool at the bottom and selects certain pieces of slate shale for his tools and art. The stone isn’t as hard as flint but flint is a rare find here. He patiently grinds out points for hunting and hooks for fishing. Using a small piece of granite or sandstone he engraves a suckerfish into a large piece of black state. This was an emblem of his people and they relied heavily on the species. He may not have known my God but he appreciated the world that was created for him.

I sometimes wonder who was more civilized. The people who go about their lives in a rush to get things done or those who simply existed in a world where most things they needed were at their fingertips? I suppose that I’m just blessed to have the best of both worlds when all I have to do is step across that little wooden bridge and enter a natural cathedral.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

March Wanderings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “March Wanderings 30420” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cool night air is filled with the chorus of the Spring Peepers as the mists fall gently on the mountain. The water condenses and pools into tiny rivers that criss-cross the hillside. Soon afterwards the sun breaks over the ridges to unveil the new world left behind by the gently falling water. It’s a good day for wandering around. All throughout the mountains the peepers songs have awoken tiny sprouts with only 1 or 2 small circular leaves. The soft green moss seems to have a new vibrancy as it slowly covers the stones and logs. The change is still in the air but in not too many days it will settle on the ground like the rain and our forests will be green again.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Quiet Moment Of Connection

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Gentle Flow 31520” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck eases gently from the pavement to the gravel. As I roll down the window the aroma of my morning coffee is interrupted with scent of the moss mingled with that of the stone and the sounds of the gently flowing water. I confirm in my heart that this moment is mine and silence the playback from my tablet as I exit the truck. There are certain spots in this world that are like recharging stations. Some are awe inspiring landscapes like the Grand Canyon but most are just little groves and streams. The smaller ones are no less powerful. They’re just harder to find. I suppose that it’s human nature to look for a big God in big places where nature is overpowering and generally speaking God will meet us in those spots too. But it’s the still, small voice that speaks volumes. All we need is to stop and hear with the intention of listening. The stone is the same age everywhere that there is earth and the water touches all parts of the globe at one point in time. It’s all part of creation and it’s all connected. Including you and I. All we need to do is take a quiet moment to acknowledge the connection with nature and it’s creator.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Minutes With The Giggling Stream

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Gentle Moments 30320” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The trickling sounds of gently falling water captures my heart and draws me into the edge of my forest. The little stream proudly displays itself as winds down the mountain from places unseen. As it makes it’s way to the river it playfully tosses the leaves and twigs where it may. The small streams have always carried a childlike spirit of innocence to me. As it flows through the forest floor and over the various stones the sounds of the the stream are more like giggling in my ears. I’ve always imagined that the water tickles the roots of the trees in mischievous play. It would be a challenge indeed to see if you could make a mighty oak lose it’s composure and laugh uncontrollably. And perhaps the odd creaking and groaning sometimes heard in the forest is just the way they laugh when a creek tickles their feet. And then somewhere in the forest the creek forms small pools where a magical jelly springs to life and becomes a school of tadpoles and the red eft waits patiently to change it’s color and return to the aquatic world that spawned it. Somewhere that’s not too far from the water but higher up on the mountain a small clay chimney rises from the leaves. This is where the blue crayfish dwells. Though seldom seen today they roam the dry land and return to their holes only to rest. And only a little farther upstream a doe takes a drink from the fresh cool water and waits in the thicket for the little one to join the world in just a few weeks. All are connected by the playful little stream and perhaps it giggles because it knows all the secrets of the forest.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
