Between Two Worlds

A cool breeze drifts across the Kanawha River and brings with it the fresh scent of the rain. It’s odd how thst even though the crystal blue sky only shows a few scant clouds in the West that you can smell the rain before it moves in. The low angle of the sun was hitting the river just right to turn the water above the hydroelectric plant into a mirror. The cormorant was perched on his arched branch soaking in the morning sun.

Not really having a particular agenda for the day allowed me to take full advantage of the peace and quiet. I just sat there gazing onto the depths of the reflections that were only broken by the occasional fallen leaf flow down the river on its trek to the South. This is what it means to be human. To have been endowed by a creator with the ability to appreciate the wonder made by his hand. To be close enough to creation so as to see the beauty in every little grain of sand on the shore and that each one has a number but not so close that the wonderment is lost. It’s this state that gives us the drive to push deeper into the mystery. But at the same time we secretly hope that the mystery never ends. As I continue to be enthralled with colors and textures of the river and the reflections that were laid out before my eyes the movement of the bird’s wings drew my attention as he rper into the air and floated on the breeze. The one thing that we had in common at that moment was that we were both suspended between two worlds.

A Late Summer Break At Kanawha Falls

The late August sun pours down on the Kanawha River as my big blue truck comes to a rest under the arching trees. The roar of the falls drowns out the days noise and pushes away all of the pressures of civilization. I watched as the geese flew in and landed on the bare rocks that stand out from the falls. One by one they meander along until they find just the right spot to settle down for a break. It seems that they instinctively know that this place is a fortress to provide isolation from the modern world. I can feel the air flowing from the top of falls as it spills into valley. Occasionally the bird chatter is strong enough to breech the sound of the rushing water giving a contrast to the droning falls. Small flashes of sunlight dance among the ripples on the river’s surface as the minnows dart around in the shallows. A little farther down the banks a trail of smoke rises into the air and travels downstream as a fisherman prepares for an evening of trying to get the one that got away last time.

I wander around taking notice of the odd shapes of driftwood and color variations on the sandstone pebbles until my sense of peace is contented. Before making my way back to the big blue truck I raised my lens for a few shots of the falls so I can bring the peaceful feeling to you.

Perseverance

Color Photography

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Dogwood In The Fall 10119” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The dry September wind claimed a toll on the Fall colors. However the Dogwood tree in my parent’s yard still shows it’s glory in crimson. No special treatment was given to the tree. It’s change seems to come from sheer strength of will. The photo was taken on October 1st which was a few days before the rains finally returned. As I stood beneath the branches and thanked God for the beautiful colors I started to think about how hard the late Summer drought had been. The image shows that many of leaves have turned brown and are dry. And yet the tree gives as much beauty as it can. The few red leaves are more appreciated than in the past few years because they’re less abundant.

You see, it’s easy enough to have success in the good times when everything is going right. But it’s the harsh conditions of the bad times when you don’t give up and bring as much as you can muster to bear that makes the difference. The harder the struggle, the sweeter the reward.

We need to not judge ourselves according to what was done in a perfect environment when success was almost a guarantee. It’s what we can do when times are tough that truly shows our resolve even if the results are not as prolific.

Cleaning The Canvas

Since the time of the ancients mankind has labored to tame the elements. We wrap our world in bands of steel and concrete tempered by blood, sweat and tears then declare ourselves as victors but nature just laughs and plays along for a little while. What is a few decades of being tamed by man when you have seen Millenia pass by? Slowly but surely each drop of rain begins to break the bonds laid upon the Earth. The forest advances and whatever isn’t pushed aside is swallowed up by the trees. Eventually iron returns to the sand, concrete is broken by roots and the moss covers all. The world returns to be a clean canvas for the next generation.

Echoes Of A Lifetime

The cool morning air sweeps across the weathered wood and rusted tin roof of the old barn on Muddelty Creek. The marsh in back of the barn seems oddly silent. All summer the reeds and rushes were teeming with life. Today only a single yellow butterfly skips over the cattail down and ruby red rose hips. I turn my attention to the old barn. It seems to be missing more of its rusted tin roof. It sags a little more than I remember from my last trip.

Barns are the heart of the homestead. They house the animals and store the feed. It’s normally where at least some of the equipment is held. It’s where the hands are happy. Busy hands are happy hands of course. Barns are the engine that powers a life close to the land. Sometimes they smell like hay and grains. Sometimes it’s the animals or even grease and oil from the machines. It all depends on the purpose of the barn which often changes in the course of a lifetime. The sounds of a barn will range from the livestock to growl of a diesel engine but it always includes human voices. Conversations between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, siblings and friends and any combination there of are soaked into the rough hewn walls and beams. The voice of the barn is their echoes and the story it tells us is that they slept in the house, but they lived here.
