The Duel Begins

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Ice Flow 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Man Winter isn’t really one to give up his seat easily. His icy grip clings desperately to the very bones of the mountains. He commands the clouds to gather above and shield him from the growing strength of the sun. But his days are numbered. Over the next several weeks the age old duel between the light and the darkness will take place in my mountain home. Ice will flow from the rocks as if the earth herself is casting out the deep cold. On the 20th day of February I have already noticed the new leaves peeking up between the blades of grass as new life emerges from a shell of frosted snow. And shortly after 9:00 AM this morning I sat down at my desk and for the first time since October the morning sun struck my eyes directly. Throughout the winter months it seldom peeks above the ridges until much later in the day. But today I was greeted by a warm smile and a ray of hope that the green thing will awaken soon. It always comes in stages. First the herbs and then the trees. Not too many days from now we will look to mountains and see patches of bright red as the maples awaken and soon after that the redbud will burst forth in pink glory followed by the Dogwood and then the rest of nature. As look at both the ice and the new leaves in the grass I’m reminded not to judge the end by the beginning. Life is a work that’s in continual progress. Hold on and have faith. The season of shadows will pass soon.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Winter’s Treasure Box 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Seedbox 21521a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A gray blanket hangs low over the mountains. It’s on days like this that one dreams about climbing to the top of some stone capped ridge and touching the clouds as they roll slowly by. Even as an adult It’s easy to believe that you could simply stretch out your finger and feel the cool damp mist collecting on your skin as you make curly queues in the soft sky. It’s a good day for wandering around with your lens when the sky dips low to meet you. The artic air is crisp and as I visit the edge of the road I’m greeted by the tiny and yet ornate pods of a seedbox. It’s square shape and intricate details makes it easy to believe that some elf or fairy has spent the winter completely dedicated to artistic workings. What back in the summer was a bright yellow spray of flowers has developed into a box worthy of any treasures known to mankind. Inside the sleeping seeds wait for the strong March winds to shake the box and carry them one by one to the grounds of their promise. A place where they will continue to sleep until the sun itself calls forth their service to awaken and grow and reflect glory in their yellow faces. But they wait for now as tiny treasures in the gray world.

Forage Friday #95 Strawberry Bush – Toxic

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature was taken specifically for Forage Friday and is simply titled “Strawberry Bush 92920a”. All photos found on my website are my original work unless otherwise specified and are available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

WARNING ⚠️ STRAWBERRY BUSH IS LISTED AS A TOXIC PLANT IN ALL OF MY REFERENCES.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

The first time I found a strawberry bush I thought it looked like something out of a science fiction movie. A pinkish spiked husk encasing bright redish orange berries had my reaching for a tri-corder. But it is native to earth and specifically the Appalachian Mountains. It’s actually in the bittersweet family and the berries are eaten by wildlife however it’s toxic to humans. The side effects that are listed in the medicinal values include “strongly laxative” which means that it’s capable of making any survival situation even worse. Nevertheless the history includes using the plant for several common conditions and includes that it was once given to treat malaria. The powdered bark was applied externally to treat dandruff.

Image Titled Strawberry Bush 992920b.

In my opinion, the plant is best used as an ornamental in place of a imported invasive species.

The flowers themselves are not very showy but the plant makes up the difference in late Summer and Fall with it’s bright fruit and deep red leaves. Plus, it’s listed in association with several native Butterfly species. And the berries are readily eaten by turkeys, Yellow Rumped Warblers, Eastern Bluebird and the Northern Mockingbird. So, even though you might not want to eat the berries yourself the fact that they attract turkeys means that you might use it to bring the big birds in. And of course the songbirds are a way of dealing with stress when they sing and I count that as being a medicinal value all on it’s own.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Willow Whispers

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Lone Willow 20921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

She stands so tall above the reeds whispering her winter’s song as the grasses sleep. With roots in land and water and her crown reaching for the clouds she touches all three realms and commits them to memory.  She tests the winds and knows the ripples while she tells of days gone by and of times to come. The song of each bird and tickling feet of each insect have been a part of her life for many decades and yet she remembers them all and waits anxiously for their return. The long sleep will be over soon and she’ll stretch out now branches for her friends to play in as the days of ice draw ever nearer to their end.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Pinnacle Of Silence

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pinnacle In Silence 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Only the wind sings as I approach the crystallized lake. The song tells a story of the stones touched by icy gales as winter’s breat rushes through empty boughs. The deep cold sweeps through the land binding rivers and cracking apart mountains. And yet the world needs the deep cold. Laying dormant beneath the forest litter the seed banks are woken by the throw of the frost. Some need the water they’ve soaked in to swell and open their hard shells so they might germinate when the weather breaks and the April showers soften their beds. Tiny roots stretch forth and seek the richness endowed by limbs cast down seasons ago. The deep cold is really a reset of cycle. The cracks formed by the freezing of the stone create aquifers and catch the living soil that would otherwise wash away and be lost. And as the ice glistens in the new light stoke the fire and have faith. Enjoy the silence and catch a breath. Each day the sun pushes away the shadows a little earlier and soon the ice will fade with them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
