Forage Friday #88 Privet – Toxic

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Privet Berries 113020” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice. In addition, Privet is a toxic plant that in a survival situation could produce symptoms that are counterproductive to survival.

Folk tales are full of forbidden fruit archetypes. The poison apple is a classic. And although these cautionary tales have a symbolic reference to morality the dangers of a fruit that looks yummy but could wind up costing a unwise traveler their life is very real. Privet is just such a plant. In several of plant forums I belong to there’s always a novice that posts a picture of beautiful berries that are available at a time of year when there’s not much to forage on. Of course those of us have learned about Privet are quick to point out that it is a toxic plant and sometimes that warning is given with exuberance that can come off as being harsh. I like to believe that’s only because they care and are frightened for the poster. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. We’re all a novice in some areas. According to Wikipedia, Privet is a mild toxin under normal circumstances. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting and one online source advises to seek medical attention if more than 5 berries are consumed. They go on to warn that for some people just contact with the leaves and berries can cause rash and that smelling the flowers causes respiratory distress. Hence the extra caution in tonight’s disclaimer. I presume that the medical professionals would treat the poison with pumping the stomach and activated charcoal. Because the modern world has such wonderful equipment and training it’s likely that the victim would survive. But a lot of people are exploring the world of foraging in relation to wilderness survival. Food is actually the lowest priority in a sudden survival situation. The first priority being shelter, then fire, then water and food is last. The higher priorities will usually require a bit of effort. A person suffering from the symptoms of Privet poisoning will not be as capable of doing the physical work needed to build shelter and gather firewood and diarrhea will cause dehydration making the need for water even more urgent.

Image Titled “Privet Berries 113020bw” and shows the color of the berries.

The confusion over the ediblilty of Privet Berries is understandable. In nature we see a lot of blue and purple berries that are edible. Our minds automatically associate those colors with things like grapes, blackberries, blueberries and elderberries. So naturally we see these colors and our reflexes are to expect the same pleasant experience.

Wikipedia and other sources also say that private is used in traditional Chinese medicine. The leaves and inner bark are used to treat diarrhea, ulcers chapped lips and sore throat. Skin problems are treated by using it to wash the area. But I also read that warning about how contact with the foliage causes a reaction.

In closing thoughts the two biggest things to remember are that it’s good to get a positive ID so never be afraid to ask before you try a new plant and remember that just because your instincts tell you that a plant looks good to eat doesn’t mean you’re instincts are right.

That’s it for the first Forage Friday post of 2021.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Ball has dropped and here in my little slice of heaven in West Virginia’s Appalachian Mountains the lights are low. Auld Lang Syne is no more than an echo in the forest. 2021 is just a baby. Like the goslings in tonight’s Feature Image the new year will take a little time to mature and find its grace. Treat the New Year well and it will grow strong and beautiful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Looking Forward 2020-2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Looking Forward 120220” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The new light lingers on freshly fallen snow as I stand on the tracks and gaze along the steel ribbons. The perspective brings to my mind the flow of time as humans perceive it. The cross ties represent the seconds, minutes, hours or whatever unit you wish to break it down to. What really matters is the steps we take in the right direction. Over the past day or so I’ve been engaged in a conversation that has me looking at my past history and trying to explain how I got to be the person I am today. Of course there was a lot of missteps that affected my destiny. Places were stumbled and fell. But I got here.

I’ve tried to avoid the whole 2020 thing on my blog because I want this to be a place where we can come to enjoy a moment of peace. But whatever 2020 is it’s undeniable. I’m reminded of the picture that hung in one of my college professor’s offices. It was of a battered knight in dented armor with a broken lance and a chipped sword that had the quote “Some days the dragon wins.” That’s been 2020 for certain. However it hasn’t been all bad. I’ve had a lot of pleasant experiences in 2020 and I think if you try you’ll be able to name a few yourself. I have a friend who has decided that along with with 2020 she was putting some closure on her own past. She posted a picture of her journals in a bonfire. Symbolically cleansing herself of the person she used to be. She’s resolved that 2021 is going to be her new start in life. I think that’s a great idea. I’m probably not… no, I am definitely not going to burn my past but I think I just might in a small way put some closure on a few things that have been holding me back. It’s almost as if my foot is stuck in a few of those cross ties. Until I resolve a few things I can’t move forward to wherever those rails will take me.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Heart Of Winter

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Heart Of Winter 120220” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Snow covers my mountain as I search for that little piece of nature that speaks to me. Occasionally I see a clump of snow fall from a branch only to see the birds disappear into the wilderness. I close my eyes for a moment to listen for the sound of tiny claws scratching sides of the trees or kicking up the leaves but all is silenced by the rushing wind. But when I looked up a bright red heart was fluttering in the breeze. It had been covered by ice and snow but as the elements shook it it became unencumbered. Sometimes the wind that’s shaking you that sets you free.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Winter Daydream On Peter’s Creek

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Winter’s Flow 120220” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The small creek gently rolls beneath the empty canopy through an alabaster landscape. Most of the songbirds that are here year round are cuddled together in well hidden nests to fend off the harsh icy bite of winter. Somewhere in the sky above the snow covered limbs a crow gives three quick caws. This was an alarm call to the rest of nature that a human being is within their domain.  I thought that I spotted him on one of the gently arching branches but I wasn’t sure.  I began to gaze upstream through the snowy scene and in my mind’s eye I saw a native lady in her canoe gently drifting my direction.  She has a load of sassafras roots for teas. There’s something warming about a good sassafras tea. It’s like coziness in a cup. In this winter’s daydream I’m but a observer. An invisible spirit in the icy mists. She passes by without a glance my direction but I can smell the sweet spicy roots in her boat. The steady rhythm of her paddle sweeping the water is hypnotic and I’m drawn into the movements. I can see the grain of the wet wood and hear the soft trickle of water was it drips from the paddle’s blade. She continues on downstream until the craft vanishes into the backdrop as if it closed behind her. I imagine that her people met her on the bank of the creek and escorted her to a warm fire, a hot meal and the love of a family. We should all have such a homecoming on a cold winter day.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
