Sassafras. The Tree Of Flame

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn’s Flames 101822” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

My favorite tree is “all of them”. Excluding tree of heaven of course. But sassafras is is definitely at the top of the favorites list. In my mind it’s an absolute embodiment of the Fall season. The various shapes of it’s leaves and beautiful spectrum of colors take me back to magical times when the best thing on earth was a huge pile of leaves to jump into. The sweet aroma of sassafras tea that was freshly brewed from a few segments of sassafras roots was ( and still is ) better than anything found in a plastic bottle at your local big box store. In fact they can’t even legally sell us the real thing because they say it might cause cancer. Some experts disagree but I digress. The sassafras leaves are almost at their peak color and the range of yellow, orange and red on the same tree makes it like a cozy fire that warms the soul through the eyes. The oaks and maples are certainly not without their own beauty but sassafras is special.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Saturday Musings In Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn Blessings 93021a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A familiar chill greets me as I step out from my threshold. It’s the cold hand of an autumn rain. It’s slow, steady and soaks everything in a fine mist. It only seems like a moment ago that I stepped out to find sunshine filling my world with a golden hue as the fall flowers smile at me from their beds and huge bumblebees float among them like airships. But today the sun sleeps late and clouds roll over the mountains. But days like this also hold great pleasures of their own. The damp air brings the scent of a warm fireplace and fresh brewed coffee. The cozy blanket and favorite chair beckon us to take a Saturday off. Maybe reclaim a little childhood and watch cartoons all morning. By afternoon most of the rain is gone and the sun raises its sleepy head to win back the day. A favorite jacket and those warm socks that you ignored all summer. Sandals are tucked away and an awesome pair of boots now carries us to the changing world of Fall. It’s a new season and there’s something wonderful out there if you just look for it.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #128 Groundcherry

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Groundcherry 1001a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

⚠️ Additionally, I have not fully Identified the plant in tonight’s Feature Image. I’m pretty sure that it’s groundcherry but the image was taken with a telephoto lens and I was not able to take a sample for positive ID. If it is groundcherry it’s the first time I’ve encountered it and I never consume any plants until I’ve had a chance to get a positive ID. So while the information in the article will be accurate the photo is my best guess on the ID.

While scanning the underbrush through my long lens for interesting insects and any other subjects that may be lurking beneath the tangled vines and stems I recognized a fruit body that so far I’ve only encountered in books. The papery shell of a groundcherry. Now this excited me somewhat because it’s not really plentiful in my area. At one time long ago it was popular among Native Americans who I believe were masters of land management. They cultivated the earth in such a way as to work so closely with nature that a cultivated plant blended into the wilderness. Their methods were so efficient that for generations after Columbus and eventually The Long Walk their little patches continued to produce and self sew. At least that’s my theory anyway.

Groundcherry is a relative of tomatoes and tomatillo and has a tomato-like berry under that papery sheath. The ones that I’ve seen in books and on the internet are yellow and more spherical than a tomato in addition to being much smaller than a modern tomato. The flavor is said to be much like a tomatillo.

Again, I should emphasize that there’s a lot of guesswork in tonight’s article. With that said, my presumption is that groundcherry would be good in salsas, pies and preserves.

In addition to the standard range of vitamins groundcherry is a source of anti-inflammatory agents that are believed to assist in fighting certain cancers. However, only the ripe berries are edible. The leaves, stems and unripe fruit are considered toxic and being a member of the nightshade family that is to be expected. So how do we know that it’s fully ripe? Well, it picks itself. The berries drop off the stems when they’re ready to be eaten. So the best way to harvest them is check the plants daily and simply pick up the berries.

I’m still learning about groundcherry myself and I don’t really know how many dangerous lookalikes are out there. The main one that I am familiar with is horse nettles. Unlike groundcherry hose nettles are covered in thorns and the yellow ball shaped fruit isn’t covered by a sheath. So if the plant has thorns it’s not groundcherry.

Another one is Chinese lantern. Again I don’t have first hand knowledge of Chinese lantern but from what I’ve found it has a red sheath where groundcherry is yellow.

That’s it for tonight’s #foragefriday! I’m certain that a lot of people are more familiar with this one than I am so please feel free to share your knowledge in the comments. I really want to learn from your experience.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Meaning of A Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Magic 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There’s definitely something to be said for those times when the outside world can’t really reach you. When you can simply exist as part of creation without a particular schedule of tasks to complete. It’s amazing what a human being can be when the chains of society fall away and rattle to the ground. Looking into the world instead of at the world comes within reach. Photographers are supposed to be mindful of time. We’re told that our magic power is to freeze time and find the meaning of a moment. It’s also said that life as we experience it on Earth is a series of moments. Therefore, if each life has a moment then it has a meaning. But if we allow those moments to be cluttered with too many outside demands then the meaning is obscure and we find ourselves searching. We try fit things into that moment that doesn’t belong there. We tell ourselves that because the clutter fills the spot where the meaningfulness would be that we’ve accomplished something. And thus because the space has been filled with something we repeat repeat the pattern of substitution over and over not realizing that there was something more to it than just filling the space. And yet on a subconscious level we instinctively know that it wasn’t satisfying. The result is that we lose our peace. As I said, photographers are supposed to find the meaning in a moment. But here’s the catch. Only you can know what your moment is meant to be. We can only find it when it’s in its spot. So take a little time and push the outside world away. Stand under the sky. Flow with water and feel the sun. And in that tranquil moment let the meaning reveal itself.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Fish Tale For October 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Touching The Surface 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A gentle wind sweeps across the big river in early Fall. It’s slightest touch causes the ripples to form on the surface. To me they resemble tiny little dunes. Above the overflow dam the river’s surface normally is normally a perfect mirror of the sky but the wind brings a minor distortion. The eddies near the edge carry a fallen leaf in their backflow. It sails along content with the change in destination. Between the bright reflections of the clouds in the sky I can see a shadow lurking above battered branches and stones at the bottom. I know what he’s thinking. “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.” The montra is the same for all hunters and certain athletes. The idea is that a twitch offers a chance to err and miss the target. The day is often won by perfect timing rather than a sudden burst. In one fluid flip of his powerful tail he breeches the surface slightly with jaws spread wide and takes the leaf to the murky depths. The only sound is a subtle “bloop” rather than a loud splash as he rolls back down with his prize and leaves ripples of his own. Not being a vegan fish he immediately released the leaf to resume its journey against the main current. The winner of the day was the leaf. I’d hoped to catch the fish in mid air dramatically breaching the surface and the fish had hoped to fill his belly with a free meal. Perhaps the next time at least one of us will be successful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
