Today’s Quiet Moment On Peter’s Creek

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tiger Swallowtail 6220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The gentle guitar softly emanates from the speakers in the Big Blue Truck. The birds seem to respond in chorus to the melody. Small insects float through the sunbeams that filter through the canopy and effect gives them the appearance of living sparks of light. Small flickers of movement in the underbrush tells me that the chipmunk is foraging in the leaves for the little red mock strawberries that dominate the forest edge right now. The bright yellow wings seem to float in on one of sunbeams and land in the sweetbriar looking for a remanent bloom. The butterfly diligently surveyed each branch before a flutter of wings lifts it into the air again. The lull in the bloom means that it will need to work a little harder to feed itself for now but soon the hydrangea will be plentiful and life will be easy again. The beauty of natural cycles means that the difficult times are temporary.

The 17 Year Brood

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Cicada 61120a. The photos in this post were taken specifically for this post and not really the kind of photos I expect people to hang as decor. However, if someone is interested in licensing them as illustrations or using them in an educational situation then click on the image and it will take you to my contact page.

The late afternoon sun burns brightly in the southern sky as I cross the mountain and head towards the lake.

It not really I trip I was expecting to make this year but my forest has been strangely silent considering what year it is. I had been expecting a constent droning that would last several months. But the 17 year brood skipped my little area this year.

However, just a 15 minute drive to the lake and the noise is unmistakable.

To put the noise levels in perspective an average conversation will occur at around 60 decibels. A jackhammer produces around 90 decibels. Cicadas ring out at 100 decibels.

Why all the noise? Well in short, they’re love sick. The insects have spent the last 17 years underground tunneling and living on roots but now they are at the end of their lifecycle and ready to make the next generation.

The empty husk of a cicada still clinging to a leaf.

Cicadas spend most of their lives as a burrowing insect with no wings but when they mature they’re driven by instinct to climb to a place where they can shed their shells and spread their newly formed wings. What’s left behind is the old exoskeleton. Insect exoskeletons are made of a substance called chitin. Chitin is a chain of complex sugars that form fibers that are actually suitable for making paper believe it or not. The process is similar to making paper from wood pulp ( which is also a complex sugar ).

Cicada wings, as it turns out, are pretty special. Some species have wings that are able to repel water so efficiently that their being studied in hopes of developing airplane wings that reject ice forming on them and glass that can’t fog up. Cicada wings are also the source of that incredible noise. They rub their wings together along with a special organ called a tymbal that makes clicking noises.

Image Titled “Cicada 61120c”

It’s the male of course that’s the noisy one. He’s just using his outside voice trying to get a lady’s attention.

Image Titled “Cicadas Together 61120”

When they’re ready to lay their eggs the female cicadas will rip open the bark of a tree and lay her eggs there. The damage done by them can kill a tree.

This invasion will probably be over in about another month or so. The adult cicadas will actually be a boom for carnivores. If you’re a fisherman then you know how much the fish love cicadas so don’t waste the opportunity. It will be another 17 years before they come out again.

Forage Friday #61 Mock Strawberry

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Mock Strawberry 61220”. The images for tonight were all taken specifically for Forage Friday. All of the photos found on my blog are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Forage Friday is only intended to be a conversation starter and all of the information presented is only intended to be as trivia. It should be mistaken for an endorsement of treatment. Please remember to do further research and be positive about identifying any wild edible before consuming.

There’s probably no other wild edible that causes more controversy than the ones that are referred to collectively as “Wild Strawberry”. I have seen people look on in absolute horror as I popped one in my mouth and swallowed. I can’t help but admit that in my twisted sense of humor I’ve pretended to choke for some. I’ve been told that the berry is deadly poison. One of the common names for mock strawberry is “snake berry” and the old wives’ tale is that snakes eat the mock strawberry in order to get their venom. The truth is that the most dangerous thing about the mock strawberry is the flavor… well, the lack thereof anyway. There’s a little variance depending on genetics and soil qualities but mostly it’s dry and bland.

Image Titled “Mock Strawberry 61220b”

In spite of the lack of flavor mock strawberries like real strawberry are rich in Vitamin C. And, here’s where that lack of flavor might actually be an advantage. It gives us a way to add nutritional value to other foods without changing the flavor. In addition to vitamin C the mock strawberry is reported to be rich in magnesium, potassium, zinc and has trace amounts of selenium. ( depending on soil conditions)

The leaves are used topically in a poultice to treat weeping eczema, insect bites and stings, boils and even though I highly doubt the effectiveness , snake bites are listed among the things that mock strawberry leaves are good for.

Image Titled “Mock Strawberry Flower 61220”

Mock Strawberry superficially resembles Garden strawberry but they’re actually not even the same genus. Real strawberries being genus Fragaria and mock strawberry listed as either Potentillia or Duchesbea.

One thing to note is that true strawberries have a white bloom while mock strawberry gas a yellow bloom.

Image Titled Strawberry Bush 92910. This plant is definitely toxic.

We started with the common belief that mock strawberry is toxic look alike of real strawberry so I decided to include an old photo of Strawberry Bush which is small shrub that is sometimes confused with strawberries. I’ll cover this plant more in depth at a later time but for now it’s a toxic strawberry look alike.

That’s about all I’ve got for tonight. Thank you joining me!

A Rabbit On The Run

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bunny Rabbit 61120” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck rolls slowly down the single lane road along Peter’s Creek. I have been out looking for something to photograph for my nightly post. The little bunny rabbit just happened to break through the tall weeds and find himself in the path of Ol’Blue. Fortunately, I was only at idle speed. For a moment his instinct to freeze overtook him and it was only after I came to a full stop that he realized that he was exposed. A few cautious hops and was in the comfort of his tall weeds again. I idled forward a bit and caught up with him. He sat motionless for long enough that I get the shot. The as suddenly as he came he slipped deeper into the weeds and I could only track him by the movement of tops of weeds. I moved the truck to intercept him only find that he’d already beaten me there. I exited the cab of the truck in an effort to catch him in the long lens but he was gone again. As I turned he bolted from the weeds next to my foot. Wait… how’d he get back over here? I turned to where I saw him last and stepped forward. Suddenly the entire little plot of weeds exploded into a field of motion as a dozen or so rabbits showed off their speed. They had all been just a few feet away the whole time and the whole time they were completely hidden. Now I’m sure that there’s some snickers in the rabbit hole tonight as they each other about the blind giant in the humongous blue machine and how they fooled him so easily. And how they reminded him that just because you don’t see something doesn’tmean it’s not there.

Treasures In The Grass

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Treasures In The Grass 6220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Life in the meadow is rich and full. The wind softly shakes the grass and carries the scent of the pollen. The tiny mason bee zeros in on the source. A Yarrow plant. Her tiny wings angle slightly and she heads for the plant. She’s already loaded heavy but she’s not at her limit yet. She works each little bloom like a master. It takes only a few minuets to completely sweep every grain of pollen and pack her legs to the max. The load doesn’t slow her down. Her movements are fluid as she lifts into the air and carries her golden treasure back to the nest. Her body shines like an emerald in the sun. A jewel surrounded by golden dust and a living treasure in the grass.
