And Then On Day… Daisies!

The late Spring sun smiles across the mountains filling each little crevice with the life giving warmth. The daisies seem to pop up over night. You just look up one day and there they are standing tall and proud. The tiny solitary bee looks like she’s hit the jackpot while walking around on the golden center of the flower. She treads softly while gently grooming the flower to create more pollen and nectar for her. It’s a big job for a little bee but when it’s a job that you love the effort doesn’t bother you.

The Little Skipper

I moved slowly through the mottled light on the edge of the forest. The edge of the mountain is a wet site and and the ditch is choked with a gift most misfortunate. The Japanese knotweed that was brought here in the late 1800s as an ornamental substitute for native river cane gas already grown large. It was the small speck that popped into air and flew in little circular patterns through the forest of alien reeds. This is the place where the mint used to grow. It was the native butterfly’s natural food source. But today the sweet odors different mints warmed by the sun are not found. But the little skipper is a hardy little rascal. He’ll continue his search and find his favorite meals. There’s a native hydrangea nearby that he can smell.

The little skipper never loses his happy outlook as he bounces his way just a little deeper into the shadows where the knotweed cannot grow. There’s enough hydrangea to feed the tiny butterflies for a few weeks until some of the native mint is found.

When non native species escape captivity one of biggest problems that it causes is crowding out of the native plants. Which at first glance might seem to not be a big deal until you consider that something might depend in that native plant to survive.

Where All May Gather

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “All The Colors Together 52620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The moist earth is warmed by the sun and fermenting grass leeches more sugars into the salty mud. This is heavenly for the male butterflies who need the mix to satiate their ladies. I have seen crescent butterflies, skippers and almost every type of Swallowtail in my region all gathering at this little ten inch mud puddle in my yard. I never even occurred to me that breeding male butterflies are actually quite territorial and even violent when it comes to maintaining their grounds. And yet here they all are concentrated in this little spot without so much as a wing bump to discourage the others. The concept of the commons is as ancient as society itself. A no man’s land where everyone has the same right to gather the necessary resources for living. And even then each retains his own territory with right of safe passage to the commons. Perhaps one day we’ll learn to see God’s patterns in problem solving and mimic his hand in our own designs.

Things Are Just Ducky #11 George’s New Home

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Napping In The Grass 52620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

George the mallard awoke from his long nap in the grass and looked around his new home. He hadn’t expected to move from his rocky perch on the banks of the Kanawha River but things change and we don’t always get to stay in the places where we had planned. The new place wasn’t really noisy and George liked that. There was also more forests than anywhere in the valley. George rose from the grass and waddled down into the water.

The cool green water had a stillness that George wasn’t used to. George could tell that the water was deeper than he could ever image in certain parts of the lake. He could see the huge carp swim along the edges of the lake and occasionally make the water boil with the edges of their tails. The lake was great place for George to have a few new adventures.

Forage Friday #60 Vetch

The Vetch plants discussed in tonight’s Forage Friday post are listed as edible by some sources and as toxic by others. Therefore I have not eaten any wild vetches myself and cannot recommend their consumption. Forage Friday is only intended to be a conversation starter and all of the information is presented as trivia and should not be mistaken for an endorsement of treatment.

Somewhere in the distance mists of the past a primitive family uses fire hardened sticks to scratch the ground. Dirty hands drop the dried beans into the trenches and gently cover them as a distant thunder signals the oncoming rain. The simple act of creating a space for the plants that feed their families closer to their camp has moved this tribe from simple foragers to horticulturalists and spawned the birth of civilization.

The only member of the vetch family that I’ve actually eaten is also one that has been cultivated by humans since 6000 BC. The simple fava bean. But why this vetch and not the others. There’s a pretty wide range of the vetches to choose from.

One that’s imeadiatly off the list of forage plants is Crown Vetch.

The Crown Vetch is known to be poison and the toxic compound 3-NPA

The Crown Vetch causes a condition in which the red blood cells are unable to release oxygen into the other tissues. The plant is pretty and smells nice but is completely inedible. Ruminants like cattle are somehow able to process out the toxin in the gastric fermentation process but a human could die from it. So definitely avoid Crown Vetch.

The feature image is believed to be common Vetch. Multiple sources list it as a wild edible stating that everything except the root can be consumed in some fashion. But again this one that I have no personal experience with so I urge you to do a lot of research about that one.

Where I know these plants from is reclaiming strip mines. The vetches are legumes and are dynamic accumulators of fertility. It’s recommend that you inoculate the roots with the proper mix of bacteria and fungi and let it grow. Typically the chop and drop method is used and the plants are allowed to decay where they fall and all that fertility is released back onto the spoil. After a few seasons the ground is healed and ready for those fava beans mentioned earlier.

So I’ve walked away from this Forage Friday post with more questions than answers. If you are person who has used any of the wild vetches then please share your knowledge in the comments.
