A Few Scattered Thoughts From The Heart Of The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Heart Of The Forest 60921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The forest path brings me to a certain spot where sunlight Breeches the thick canopy and illuminates the life contained among ancient boles. Small fairyflies float effortlessly in sunbeams while the birds teach their children the songs of their ancestors. Somewhere in the distance I hear the hooves of a deer retreat deeper into a world unseen behind thick rhododendrons. Sudden movements among fronds gives away the chipmunk that is scurrying for the comfort of his tunnels. For a moment I remove my shoes and feel the cool damp moss of the forest floor. As I close my eyes and sample the wind it brings me the scent of the earth mingled with the blooms of the rhododendrons. The warm rays of the sun wash over me and gently drive away the worries of the modern world. Outside the voices that come through technology with their many different concerns about things beyond control would pull us away from what is important. But they can’t come here to the heart of the forest on the high mountain. I open my eyes and see the heart shaped leaves of the redbud. It’s beautiful bloom has long since fallen and the pea like pods have not yet formed. It is at rest and gathering energy to grow its fruit. All life has this cycle. A period of spectacular glory that shows the possibility of what may come and a period of waiting for the fruit to develop. In the modern world we have gotten used to everything being now. Instant messaging, up to the moment news cycles and such. Have we forgotten the importance of quiet time? It’s in those periods when nothing seems to be happening that the miracles are developing without fanfare. I think of the character “Miracle Max” from the Princess Bride saying that you should never rush a miracle man or you’ll get rotten miracles. ” What was said in jest there was a deeper truth than intended. It takes time to for the fruits of our efforts to develop and just because we don’t see it right now doesn’t mean we failed or that God has failed us. As mortal beings our perspective of time is very narrow. But if we could see it from outside of our perspective we could realize how quickly things are actually happening.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Little Spot For Solitude

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Nature’s Dance 61621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The damp leaves make no sound as I ease my way down to the forest path. Every landscape has that special place where you can go to escape from the noise of the outside world. Cities have certain rooftops and little hiding holes tucked away here and there. Panther Mountain that frequently visit has a few gaps in the forest that offer amazing views of the Gauley River below. The property that I grew up on had multiple places on rocky ledges and hidden valleys where a person sit quietly. During pre teens I was in my “ninja phase” and it wouldn’t have been uncommon to find me perched on the edge of a small cliff in the lotus position just breathing and listening to nature. And then there was the rhododendron grove that grew on the corner of the property. In this place a stand of mature rhododendrons stood that was twenty feet tall. The twisted and gnarly stems gave this spot the feel of an enchanted forest where at any moment one might meet any number of characters from legend. Such a grove is also found at Indian Rocks Park in Craigsville West Virginia. On the Far end of the serine pond is the spot that they call the Dancing Forest. The tall rhododendrons grow all over and seem to be dancing to the echoes of ancient drums they felt hundreds of years ago. This is an excellent spot to lose the outside world and find yourself. I plan to go back in the near future for more photos like this one and perhaps to feel that echo of ancient drums rattling through the mountains.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Thoughts About Light And Shadow.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Cairn 42821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Overcast days are really the best days to work with natural light. The clouds add a soft diffused light that’s pleasing to the eye. Ultimately I try to work with what’s at hand and seek opportunities on all days. In some ways light flows like water. It either ebbs gently onto the subject like a mild tide or floods in like a raging river but it’s always an active component of every photo. The light is a living thing. It has moods and goals in my eyes. It bursts forth, warms, penetrates, subdues and fills. Science tells us that light comes in both seen and unseen forms. It energizes and drives. Light communicates. The very device you’re reading this post on uses radio waves which are a form of light. The servers communicate with satellites and beam data into a system which carries it to either a cell tower or a WiFi connection that sends invisible light through walls and into your device. In essence it’s all light. Light falls onto the plants and drives the chlorophyll that makes food and even if a person is a 100% carnivore they depend on herbivores that consume plants that contain the energy of light. In essence we feed on light.

But what of shadows? Do shadows not creep and grow? Do they not cover and stretch into the deep places? Or is it that shadows are the absence of light with only the illusion of living? Shadows both lay and lie. As a child I once became very frightened by shadows that seemed to move in my bedroom. But it was only an illusion caused by my own eyes trying to adapt to the darkness. ( A few experiments in my college life found that I can see slightly deeper into the infrared range than average. But I digress. ) Shadows drain energy and starve what they fall upon. And yet without them we don’t notice the light working in our lives. We couldn’t appreciate the texture of a stone or a reflection in the water. Sharp edges would be imperceptible and curves unknown.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Wishing

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Wishes In Waiting 52621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I have to admit that I got older but never really grew up. When I see a good wishing dandelion I have the strong urge to make a wish. But what to wish for is the question. Money is spent, beauty fades away and all of the fancy trinkets become clutter and a source of worry. Power corrupts the powerful. All of these things imply happiness but all of them are also not happiness in essence. When God offered to grant Solomon his wish he asked for wisdom and with that tool he gained and held onto everything else.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Remastering Glory Days

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is remastered from 2018 and titled “September Crossing 91518RM” all the photos found on my website are my original work and are available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Within the past few days I’ve overheard more than one person refer to the “Glory Days” with nostalgia. The intention of course was a longing for the days of youth when life was simple and responsibilities were few. God never intended for life to drudgery and constant tasks. Adam’s job was fairly simple. To oversee a self-sustaining garden and give everything a name. In fact if you read carefully the Garden of Eden was Adam’s charge. There he answered only to God meaning that he authority over the Angels that were within his charge. But that’s a deeper thought for another day. The point here is that his responsibility wasn’t a burden. He was in his “Glory Days”. Of course we know how that ended. He was drawn to the only place in the garden where the authority wasn’t his and he fell from grace through an act of disobedience. He lost his charge and from that day on he was burdened. I couldn’t find the verification on the origin of the phrase “Gory Days” but I always thought it was the days before the fall of mankind. But the words have a slightly different meaning today. We think of it as simply meaning “when things were better”, specifically in the past. The scenarios are different but the basics are usually the same. The athletes long for the days when they mastered the field. Some long to regain the beauty that they once held and even the scholar misses being the head of the class. But is it true that all Glory Days are in the past?

If that’s true then we struggle with the maintenance of yesterday at the expense of tomorrow. According to Newton the whole universe is in a constant state of decline and the best we can hope for is to lose glory as slowly as possible and even then we will eventually fail. According to this conventional wisdom it’s a lost cause. But what if conventional wisdom is wrong. What if your potential for future success was limited only by your perspectives? To return to the biblical analogy for a moment we are promised that the end is better than the beginning and what we see in this world is only a transition and the higher glory is in the future.

John Glenn certainly felt like his first trip into space was a lifetime achievement and that was his glory days but at age 77 he returned to space in a more sophisticated ship. If his focus was only on the past then he might have turned down the opportunity and never had his higher glory. Instead of sitting in a chair somewhere recalling the time when he was great he worked and trained to go beyond his first achievement. All it really takes is to recognize that the finish line hasn’t been crossed yet and move forward. We can remaster our lives in the same way I remastered the Featured Image. By taking advantage of new opportunities ( like new and more sophisticated software) and learning to let go of the past.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
