A Few Thoughts About Light And Shadow.

Overcast days are really the best days to work with natural light. The clouds add a soft diffused light that’s pleasing to the eye. Ultimately I try to work with what’s at hand and seek opportunities on all days. In some ways light flows like water. It either ebbs gently onto the subject like a mild tide or floods in like a raging river but it’s always an active component of every photo. The light is a living thing. It has moods and goals in my eyes. It bursts forth, warms, penetrates, subdues and fills. Science tells us that light comes in both seen and unseen forms. It energizes and drives. Light communicates. The very device you’re reading this post on uses radio waves which are a form of light. The servers communicate with satellites and beam data into a system which carries it to either a cell tower or a WiFi connection that sends invisible light through walls and into your device. In essence it’s all light. Light falls onto the plants and drives the chlorophyll that makes food and even if a person is a 100% carnivore they depend on herbivores that consume plants that contain the energy of light. In essence we feed on light.

But what of shadows? Do shadows not creep and grow? Do they not cover and stretch into the deep places? Or is it that shadows are the absence of light with only the illusion of living? Shadows both lay and lie. As a child I once became very frightened by shadows that seemed to move in my bedroom. But it was only an illusion caused by my own eyes trying to adapt to the darkness. ( A few experiments in my college life found that I can see slightly deeper into the infrared range than average. But I digress. ) Shadows drain energy and starve what they fall upon. And yet without them we don’t notice the light working in our lives. We couldn’t appreciate the texture of a stone or a reflection in the water. Sharp edges would be imperceptible and curves unknown.

A Winter’s Refreshing At Cathedral Falls

As the evening sun begins to retreat behind the mountains it grants one last gaze into the cove at the foot of Gauley Mountain. The soft light spreads through the forest floor as wood and stone are bathed in the cascade of Cathedral Falls. The oxygen charged air within the natural cathedral enhances the sense of peace as I cross the wooden footbridge. Time itself seems to slow to a halt as the elements of nature coalesce into my frame. It’s been said that God first set the word of His testimony into nature. I believe that is true because as I look at the beauty He created for us to live in his love for us is written on every stone, carved into every tree, bound into every drop of water and energized by every ray of light. With my spirit renewed in this natural sanctuary it’s time to replace the cap on my lens and return to the big blue truck and head home.

I Was Here

As humans we are hardwired to build. No matter if it’s a child making mud pies or a master tradesman crafting a skyscraper we can observe a meditative like state of mind as that person works. I wasn’t present when the cairn in tonight’s feature image was built but imagine that each stone was specifically chosen with planing and forethought. I imagine that the actual stacking would have involved mentally placing each peace in multiple positions so as to prevent the whole thing from collapsing. In the past I was fascinated with megalithic works. Everywhere you find humans you find large stones arranged by human hands. And of course my favorite was Stonehenge. Everyone has a theory about why it was built and in fairness it has been used for many purposes over the past Five Thousand Years but I have to wonder if it’s simply a work of art. Assembling Stonehenge would have been a massive undertaking but what if like the random hiker stacking stones near Cathedral Falls the builders simply wanted to be remembered? After all, stacking stones is a great way to say “I was here”.

Making Your Mark

Back and White Photography

I stumbled across this cairn last year. I knew that people would stack up rocks as a way of marking that they had been there but I didn’t know that it was called a cairn. I had always thought that a cairn a Celtic tomb. It’s a much nicer way to leave you mark than tagging. I guess it’s human nature to want a marker to say “I have been here. ” I was at the end of the Kilroy fad. I never knew why we did it and the origin of the mark is… well, “lost to urban legend “. I just knew that he was a funny little guy with a big nose and he likes to peak over the walls. Below is a poorly scrawled example. ( There’s a reason why I do photography instead of drawing )

No matter if it’s a stack of rocks or a poorly scrawled cartoon we seem to want to be remembered. Even if it’s anonymous. We have an instinct to not be forgotten. I have also picked up a small stone from my land and made a mark on it to leave behind on a trail.

I wouldn’t recommend defacing public or private property thought. But, if you leave something that’s not litter and just enough to make someone curious I consider it a gray area. There’s a local group who paints stones and leaves them where it’s not obvious but it can still be found. If you write a word of encouragement on the stone it might be found by the right person at the right time to change their day. And wouldn’t that be a good way to leave your mark on the world? Not written in stone but transferred to a heart through the stone.

Warm weather is upon us and people will be out enjoying the fresh air. If you can do so without breaking any laws or damaging property let me encourage you to find a way to anonymously leave something behind to make someone smile.
