First Glow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “First Glow 40821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The late morning sun fills the empty lake. The once trickling McKee’s Creek now runs steady and the large valves that lay in seldom seen depths have begun to hold back the Gauley River. There’s no doubt in my mind that the legend of the lake bottom has left his well hidden underwater cavern and began to stalk his old hunting grounds after nightfall. The lake awakens to stretch out her shoreline and reclaim her seat among ancient hills. A small but very furry bee buzzes along shore and rises up the face of the cliff to the newly opened blooms. The sun smiles down fondly on the small flowers warms the sweet nectar inside.
The opening of the “Sarvis” or serviceberry is a special day on the lake  as it announces to the world that changes are well underway.  The flowers catch the sun and glow brightly against the dull brown and gray of the trees and sandstone. They seem to be like little flares signaling that the main event is about to begin.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Day In The Sun

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “A Day In The Sun 40621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck rolls by slowly as the little weevil climbs from the cluster of mustard flowers. He doesn’t even seem to care if anyone else is even in the same world. All he desires is to sit quietly in the sun. Even if it’s just for a little while. He rejoices that the long deep cold of winter has passed and this day is warm. The sun pushed back the dark curtain of clouds to embrace the world in life-giving light. The new life is coming on strong now. In a few weeks the bare branches will give way to lush green forest. Even as he perches atop his mustard plant the light and wind sweep away the dull brown grass to find soft new blades underneath. The mountain meadow is mostly green now speckled with cheerful dandelion dots that all look up and smile. The small solitary bees are out in force and their metallic green bodies glisten in the sun like a swarm of stars on a clear night. Life in the meadow is good but a day in the sun is the cherry on top.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Quiet Moment Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Dutchman’s Breeches 32621a ” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The scent of the fresh earth rises up from the forest floor as I search the fallen leaves for signs of the emerging Spring. Care must be taken to not disturb any forest dwellers that hide just below the leaf layer. So I extend my monopod and poke around a bit looking for movement. I’ve never found a viper in this area but there’s a first time for everything. Just above me a chipmunk scurries to the other end of the fallen tree and disappears into the thick leaf layer.

Image Titled “Grass Spider 31721bw”.

A tiny grass spider discreetly climbs from under a nearby leaf and quietly yields right of way to the giant kneeling down in her domain. She’s only interested in remaining invisible and is soon gone. Without her kind I’d be overrun with pests and so I wait patiently for her to be one her way. This is her property too and she has the right to be here.

Looking up to the Dutchman’s Breeches I see that most of them are now open. I know that when they are here that it’s not long before the bluebells arrive. I missed them last year and I’ve been looking forward to a second chance to capture their beauty as well. Mostly I just take a moment to enjoy the outdoors and a little peace of mind.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The One Who Stands Out

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “One Stands Out 33021” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The late afternoon sun kisses my mountain as I stroll around the yard for a breath of fresh air. I’d thought that maybe I’d catch one of the butterflies resting on a bloom and having a sip of nectar on a warm Spring day. But none were there this time. As I search the depths of the bush through my lens I noticed that among the repeating patterns of little yellow flowers only one seemed to turn its face towards me. Superficially all the flowers are identical. They’re all the same color, size and shape. The majority of them that are in focus are facing the left. But only one that’s looking directly into the lens. We’re often told that our words have power. But we humans actually communicate more with our body language than we do our words. So much so that our dogs are adapted to watch our hands and facial expressions while paying attention to our tone of voice than they pay attention to our vocabulary. If you’re words are powerful then your smile multiplies that power exponentially. So look up from your devices from time to time and give someone a smile. You’d be amazed at how much your warm smile says to people.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days. 🙂

Life Begins Anew

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Life Begins Anew 33021” and is available for purchase by clicking on the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the new light fills my landscape the waking forest begins to send out new life. For the first year ever my volunteer apple tree has produced bloom on every branch. The sweet blossoms are absolutely alive with bumblebees. These little wonders are seeing the world for the first time. Most queen bumblebees nest underground in winter in a borrowed hole. It’s in that dark underground place where they lay and tend the new life that is to emerge in Spring. When the brood hatches they collect pollen and nectar to bring back to hive.

With this being Easter weekend the symbolism isn’t lost on me. Jesus also borrowed a hole in the ground where he brought forth new life. I’ve often contemplated that the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter morning had to be the darkest day in history. To the natural world there had been a darkness that fell across the land and an earthquake that destroyed the temple. The believers had seen the Messiah slain and sealed in a tomb. But much like the new light of Spring and the new life emerging from the ground Christ arose and with him a new world for mankind. Not a word ran by the law of man but by the Grace of God and merciful judgment. And just like the new brood of bumblebees we are new eyes exploring a new world.

Happy Easter friends and be blessed throughout your days.
