All You Really Need Is One Chance

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Shy Walker In The Woods 110320” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Soft breezes gently caress the tall grass making sway ever so slightly. The warm sun yields yet a little more life to the season but that will soon change as the damp days of late fall ebb closer. The road through the park is all but abandoned so I set the breaks and step out to look for my next photo. The silence of the park is broken by the sound of footsteps on dry leaves and at first I thought that some hiker would be wandering up from the old trail that leads through the ancient boles of virgin timber. The sound draws nearer and I can now hear the subtle “stutter” of four feet walking as opposed to the steady marching of only two feet. The breeze delivers the hint of musk and I knew that she’d soon step from the shadows. I braced the camera on the hood of the big blue truck zoomed in past the reflection of paint. As she began to top the embankment that separates the field from the forest her keen ears twitched my direction. The whitetail is able to see movement but for the most part these deer are nearsighted. However you cannot fool those ears or if the wind shifts that nose. She knows I’m there but she hasn’t quite pinpointed me yet. Her instincts to hide from whatever is on the pavement has locked behind the few sparse blades of grass. As far as she is concerned she’s invisible. The beep of the automatic focus echoes in those amazing ears and for a split second her lock onto the lens. You only get one chance sometimes I thought as the shutter snaps. The doe whirls back and in a single bound vanishes below the crest of the hill. One chance was all I had. But if you’re set and ready one chance is all you need.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Groundhog’s Thoughts

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Thinking Spot 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

“Come sit with me for a while.” The groundhog said as I softly tread through the drying leaves. He glanced over his shoulder to look for my reaction. Having nothing better to do at the moment I obliged the old fellow. We sat in silence for a few minutes listened closely to birds chatter. “It’s good when there’s lots of noise. It means that there’s no predators.” The kindly old woodchuck spoke. I nodded in agreement and waited for him to continue. He commented on the changes in leaves while gnawing on the acorns scattered about the base of our log and sniffed the wind. “The changes are coming. I can already smell the frost.” He spoke as he looked at me with sleepy eyes. I had to agree once more as I pulled my jacket a little tighter. He chewed another acorn and looked around a bit. “This is my thinking spot. I come here after a long day of foraging and try sort out the things that are important for a groundhog. Which fields to visit for the best herbs and seeds. What spots are good to hide from the coyotes and wildcats etc. A groundhog’s life can get complicated like that. And I have discovered that when I sit quietly I’m a pretty good thinker.” I tried to hide my amusement but I realized that what he was actually telling me was that in order to do well it was good to not be overwhelmed by the problem and that if I slow down and think about it the solution was already prepared. We just need to recognize it. Before I comment the Groundhog rose up from the log and stretched. Stifling a yawn he looked at me and said, “Good night and I’ll see you in February.” He then made his way to his burrow through the forest floor.

The Great Blue Heron Of October 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Great Blue Heron 102220a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Drop by drop the Spring rains filled Summersville Lake until it covered 28,000 acres. And in the Fall the gates open and the water recedes down to winter pool. Visually, the empty lake bed has always reminded me of desert with it’s scattered stones, long dead tree stumps and small stream. However, it’s anything but dry. In some places the mud is knee deep but in others it’s only a few inches down to the hard stone bottom. In those spots it’s great to find tracks and get an idea of what kinds of animals are around. But this time when I looked down into the empty lake the animal was still there.

The Heron family of birds are the very definition of stealth. They sometimes stalk the creek in front of my house and in spite of being a large bird you won’t notice them until you’re too close for their comfort. Then the sudden takeoff and massive wings can give you a good scare. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have an encounter with a Pterodactyl I’m fairly certain that walking up on the Great Blue Heron is probably a close proximity.

He stood there as still as the driftwood around him waiting for the small bait fish to try and make their way downstream to the main waters.

I hadn’t truly appreciated how sharp his vision is until he slowly changed position and began to crouch.

With one powerful flap of those huge wings he was airborn and closing in on his quarry that was about 80 yards upstream.

He also showed some strategy in over shooting his target, circling back and landing in a position that would have to cause his prey to look into the sun in order to see the attack. Once back on the ground he coiled that long neck into an S shape and rushed in. The strike was flawless and as soon he swallowed the first fish he flew back to his original position and picked up the one that thought it had gotten away. The Heron is truly a remarkable predator!

We have a tendency to get the mindset that when the campers and boaters are gone that the lake has nothing to offer but in reality the wildlife is just getting started.

Well Friends, that’s it for tonight and thank you for joining me for this one. Good night and be blessed throughout your days.

The October Blue Jay Encounter

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Promise In Blue 102220a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the waning days of the sun draw towards their eventual close the leaves drop and uncover the world of birds. In the summer months the hidden avian population fills the breeze with utterance from well concealed perches. But as the world changes and forests begin to sleep a window opens for us to gaze on our companions.

It was near the foot of Panther Mountain Road that they became curious about the big blue truck parked on the quiet country lane. Like all of the Corvidae family the Blue Jays are highly intelligent and intelligence leads to inquisitive moments. I’m certain that they had been following the truck as I made my forrey into their territory. When I came to a stop the male was the first to brave the open contact on a bare branch.

His sharp eyes zeroed in on the open window of the cab. Naturally distrustful, he was determined to watch every move bade by the human behind the lens. After a few minutes he decided to circle around and sneak in a little closer to me. But what happened next reveals not just a high degree of thought but also sophisticated communication skills. With a few soft calls he brought out his mate who took a higher position in the tree. As soon as she signaled to him that she had her eyes locked on my position the male dropped from tree and flew unseen down the creek to pop up in the the trees on the other side of the bridge. His bride continued to observe but then a few more soft calls from the male and she began to move from branch to branch. She would drop to a lower branch and return to the top. Her tactics were successful because as I looked on trying to figure out what she was up to the male moved in and skimmed my windshield before taking up a branch directly above the truck. He squawks loudly above my head and when I stepped out of cab to see what he was up to the female flew unseen to cover and echoes his calls. My reflexes caused me to look to where she had gotten to and when I looked back the male was gone. I had been duped by a pair of birdbrains! I knew that I often stepped out of my door and had a Blue Jay cross my path and sound the alarm as it flew to warn other birds of an intruder but I never realized before that as I watched it’s antics it’s mate was probably sneaking away at the same time.

Thanks for spending time with me tonight and be blessed throughout your days.

The Treasures Of The Mountain

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Appalachian Treasures 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The breeze carries that familiar sweet earthy scent of freshly fallen leaves throughout the hills and valleys. If I am still enough I can hear the leaves gently tumbling through the branches before softly coming to rest on the ground. Small birds of every feather all around collecting their favorite seed and hunting insects. The sun sweeps across the the landscape caressing fully changed leaves to reveal the secret treasure of the mountains. Golden leaves shine brilliantly and behind them the rich red forms a velvety blanket. Could a royal treasury hold another spender more wonderous than the glory of nature in her seasons? Do kings not trade their treasures for landscape that contains such glorious moments as is found in our mountains? Step outside your door and smell the breeze, accept the sun’s touch and let your eyes fall on the treasures that surround you and enjoy your life in the time you’re given.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
