Disturbance Proceeds Renewal

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Dreams In The Meadow 90720” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Late summer mists rise skyward after the rain clears and the big blue truck delivers me to the quiet country road. An old lot once cleared to accommodate parking for heavy equipment is no longer abandoned. Nature in her progression shows the world the folly of the bulldozer for mankind only occupies a season in the age of a mountain. She first sends the herbs to break up the spoil. Hardy and determined they use their roots to till the land and crumble hard earth. She erects a barrier of thorns and pickles to hedge against trespass. Then in that place once dominated by steel the wild things come to play. They frolic among the colorful blooms and draw sweetness where once there was only stone and bare ground. The trees soon return to cover the landscape and their branches shelter even more wildlife as the songs of the finches and cardnials fill the air. The dream of the master architect is soon realized. Not all gardens are arranged in rows and columns. But don’t be fooled. It was part of the plan for man to disturb the old forest with his machines that sweep away bits and pieces of what once was so that room can be made for new. Disturbance proceeds renewal and without it the world would stagnate and die. Yes there are better ways to do it and we have a lot to relearn. But we are part of the cycle and always were.

A Short Visit with a Tiger Swallowtail

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Ironweed 90420a ” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The September sun smiles on an open field in the bottom-lands after a rain. The humid air is saturated with the smell of the ironweed. At first you only notice a single set of wings soaring in on the thermal eddies rising from the blacktop. Gentle tilts of the wings direct the Tiger Swallowtail towards it’s treasure. The Ironweed has just started coming into full bloom. The aroma has driven the butterflies into a frenzy and they’re coming from all directions. The Tiger Swallowtail circles over the engine of the big blue truck while gathering altitude before gliding down and coming to rest on the purple flowers. The old pasture has become a sea of purple and yellow flowers exploded into a grand finale of the summer season. I could spend the whole day photographing the butterflies and to my joy the honeybees are out in what seems to be full force gathering for their winter stores. But the road ahead calls me forward to my next destination.

Visited By A Flying Lobster

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “September Visitor 90720” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Amid the the rain kissed leaves and blooms the flight pattern catches and holds my eye. I’ve been watching out for a chance to photograph a ruby throated hummingbird but he’s very camera shy and vanishes into the forest when he feels my gaze. The hummingbird continues to elude me. However, the visitor who buzzed into view is just as special in its own way.

Outsiders to the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia would swear that I had been hitting the still if I told them that I was visited by a flying lobster but that’s what we call them. The articulated tail which helps it hover really resembles the tail of a lobster. I suppose that some of the old timers had a lot fun at the expense of those who braved the muddy trails into wild mountains with tales of a crustacean that swims through the air. Of course the rest of North America knows it as the Snowberry Clearwing Moth. The unusual thing is that this moth is active in the day and into the night. It’s completely enthralled with the sweet purple flowers of the tall ironweed. It circles each cluster grooming the flowers with powerful beat of it’s wings. In response the flowers sweeten their nectar to ensure that the moth continues to feed and catch more pollen in its fur. The field is covered in ironweed and it’s really easy to see why my ancestors envisioned the moth as a lobster flying through the coral. The bees and butterflies also swarm around the foliage but there’s only one flying lobster. It’s not rare, only unique.

The Wanderer In The Mist

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Wanderer In The Mist 1” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the at the bottom of the article.

The late summer afternoon sun glares intensely into the mountains as the big blue truck and I cruise a back road. The marbled sky has begun to show those deep blue pools that draw the eye into an echo of eternity. Such a sky recalls the days of lying in a freshly cut hay field and watching for the objects of fantasy to manifest in the canvas above my mountains. As I gently wind my way along the old route my attention to the heavens shifts back to road in time for a rolling cloud to cast a sunbeam into the margin of wildlife beyond the gravel berm. Awakened by seasonal rain and the shift in the light the Blue Mistflower announces an end to intense heat and humidity left behind by the Dog Days. The oncoming Equinox is only a few weeks away and with it the cooler days and turning leaves will change the world once more. I’ve always liked the little Mistflower with its arrays of frilly blue disks. They remind me of something from classic science fiction and today nature provides an alien life form in the form of a longhorn beetle. The little beetle is nearly as busy as a honeybees as it constantly wanders from flower to flowe. The longhorn has been pollenator for as long as the honeybee. It even dresses like the bees in the uniform of an official pollenator in black and yellow. The Mistflower itself is an important late season food for the native pollenators and without them then we may not have as many happy little wings in the Spring.

Forage Friday #73 Japanese Honeysuckle

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Japanese Honeysuckle 61620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Please remember that Forage Friday is only intended to be a conversation starter and all of the information is presented as trivia and should not be mistaken for an endorsement of treatment of treatment.

Mostly associated with early Spring and Summer Japanese Honeysuckle in known for its overwhelmingly sweet scent. Some people are actually sent into an asthmatic episode by it Japanese Honeysuckle because of three strong fragrance. But for the rest of the world this invasive species does hold some benefits.

Like many of the invasive species in the Appalachian Mountains Japanese Honeysuckle was brought here in 1800s as an ornamental plant and as a ground cover. The rabbits and deer soon found out the flowers were quite tasty and even the hummingbirds are fond of sweet nectar from honeysuckle. The flowers themselves can also be consumed by humans. As a young boy I learned that pinching the flowers of at the base allowed one to suck out the nectar deep inside.

The flower can be added to salads but us most recognized as a medicinal tea. Traditional uses for the tea are centered around sore throat and bronchitis. However Japanese contains Methyl caffeate which according to the Wikipedia article may help both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. ( I should point out that I’m not giving advice here and that Wikipedia article was a little beyond my understanding.) In short my layman’s perspective is that it makes one more sensitive to insulin and that could lead to bottoming out. Which is a good reason to pay attention to the disclaimer at the top of the article.

Traditional Chinese use includes skin infection and tumor necrosis.

Eating the berries was not recommended only the flowers are used.
