The Beautiful Little Box

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Seedbox 122719BW” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I can hear the small birds chirping just out of sight as creep along the ditch on the little side road below the interstate highway.  Winter has definitely given us a mild start and the warm weather has given me an opportunity to grab a few extra photos between errands.  I stopped in this spot because I caught a glimpse of some dark blue berries as I drove by. As I approach the vine to investigate I realized that I was surrounded by hundreds of tiny cube shaped seedheads. The top of each little box seems to be decorated with a finely carved relief carving. The ornamentation gives the little box the look of something one might find in a Victorian home. One pore in the center of the ornamentation allows seeds to escape.  The seeds themselves are so small that hundreds of them will fit on the surface of a U.S. dime.  The plant itself is nearly five feet tall.

I remembered seeing an example of the seedhead in one of my guide books but it’s not listed as food or medicine so I never really paid much attention to it. In fact it took me a couple of hours on Google just to confirm the name. Locally it’s been called rattlebox because the dry box shaped pods do make a slight rattling noise but there’s also a poison plant called rattlebox and several that go by rattleweed. So the most widely used common name is “Seedbox”. The scientific name is Ludwigia alternifolia. The genus Ludwigia tells me that it’s the same family as the primrose that adorns the edges of my yard with large yellow flowers in summer and us actually capable of listening for bees to come close. (Primrose actually sweetens it’s nectar in response to the buzzing of bees). The species name alternifolia tells me that the leaves alternate up the stem instead of growing in parallel.  In this time of year the plant takes on a beautiful orange color. The orange color of Seedbox in late December.

As a part of the ecology of Appalachia and beyond Seedbox seems to be a food source for several insects but small butterflies were named on several links.A very small butterfly takes a break in the gravel.  One of many that feeds on Seedbox.

The flower of the Seedbox closely resembles a primrose only smaller and it has that happy yellow color that makes is suitable for certain spots on my property as part of my native landscape and the fact that it attracts butterflies makes it more desirable.  As a bonus we also get the beautifully designed box in winter.  Image Titled “Seedbox 122719C”

The New Light 2019

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “First Light” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The darkness lingers in the “hollers” of my Appalachian Mountains as the shadows claw at the landscape and struggle to maintain their grip on the world. But with the first ray of the new light they lose their grip and start to shrink away back into the ether.

The morning sun has awoken at long last and with renewed vigor begins it’s work clearing the darkness from all it surveils. The light doesn’t simply wash over the earth as the darkness does. It pierces through the land breathing life into all of creation.

This wrestling match between the light and the darkness will continue for the next several weeks but nighttime’s fate is sealed. The light has returned.

When I noticed the seedhead of the wild Clematis (AKA Old Man’s Beard) being illuminated by the rising sun I knew that I wanted to save it for tonight’s feature image because the light just seems to fill it. Not shine through it but actually fill it to the point that it almost disappears.

The light really does fill everything it touches. The range of the light that we see is reflected but light is more than just what we see. Those invisible rays are penetrating deep into the seeds making them to be fertile. Just because we don’t really see the light doesn’t mean that it’s not there.

Winter Solstice 2019

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Nightfall On The Kanawha River 101419” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Old Sol closes his sleepy eyes and settles behind the mountain for his long rest. The winter solstice has come at last. On December 22nd the sun must begin the long march to his rightful place in the sky. We won’t notice it at first but the light is returning to our world.

Yes, our coldest days of winter are still ahead of us but during those days the shadows will slowly ebb away. I refer to this as “The New Light” and as we draw closer to Christmas Day I’ll go into more detail about what I mean. Like many things in life I draw both natural and spiritual meanings from my observations. (I fully believe that we are spiritual beings having a natural experience)

We all have seasons of darkness in our lives. Times when we feel like the morning sun is taking forever to rise. But it’s the longest darkness that signals the end of the night. And the next night will be shorter.

So how did I celebrate the winter solstice today? With a nap. I laid back in my recliner with my Beagle mix and I rested and restored myself. I have come to the conclusion that often what we think of as a spiritual “long night” is simply fatigue. The modern world places a lot of demands on our lives. Life is energy and fulfilling those ever growing demands takes a lot of energy. Whenever I feel like the darkness is closing in on me I know it’s time to get some rest and let that energy reserve be restored.

So as the darkness passes through my mountains I am rebuilding my own energy and looking forward to the new light to gently return in the weeks ahead.

And speaking of rays of light I do have a favor to ask. One of my blogger friends graciously nominated me a Sunshine Blogger Award. I really don’t participate in those kinds of posts for various reasons but I really do want you to please check out Chocoviv’s Lifestyle Blog which is full of words of encouragement and different product reviews as well as things to make.

The Stillness

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Stillness” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck is parked on the edge of the marsh as I scan the landscape for any sign of life. Just a few short months ago this place was teeming with wildlife and the air was full of bird’s songs. Today even the wind seems to be idle as I continue to search the sea of cattail hoping for a glimpse of colorful feathers.

Image Titled “The Stillness 2”

The lone tree in the middle of the marsh caught my eye. It’s the only tree on this side of the road. It seemed to be longing for the birds to return home and fill it with the joyful calls and cackles. The marsh rose bears it’s brilliant red hips with no eye to behold it’s gift except for the seeker who stands on the edge of the cattails.

Image Titled “The Rose’s Second Gift”

I turned my attention to the sky above and the clouds are thick and heavy with melancholy. Surely they will soon begin weeping over the sleeping landscape.

I turned once more to my big blue truck and decided that I should continue to seek out the wildlife in another area when in the distance something rattled the dry leaves of the cattails. I spun around just in time to see the blue jay as it deftly plucked a rose hip from out of the thorns. He didn’t tarry long but swiftly returned to the thick cover of the cattail leaves. From deep within the marsh he gave an angry call. He wasn’t happy to a human near his feeding grounds. Then another jay called out in response and his call was echoed by several more. There was life in the marsh after all. And where there are jays there are Cardnials and Thrashers and many more.

Just because life isn’t obvious doesn’t really mean that it’s missing. Sometimes it’s just a season of stillness and seasons change. At the time of this writing the new light is just hours away. The sun will begin to rise earlier and set later. The winter is the season of the returning light. And with it will come new life.

A Few Things To Like About Lichens

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Lichen 121319” all the photos found on my blog are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cold December rain continues to fall in my beloved Appalachian Mountains. At my core I am as much a part of the forest as the birds that continue to chirp in the lull between downpours. As I tread softly across the wet leaf litter the greenish gray colored vegetation catches my eye. The lichens are thick in this part of the forest. They have completely coated the fallen log and are even out competing the moss. I paused for a moment and took a long deep breath. The air is clean and invigorating and the lichens let me know that I could breath in confidence in this spot.

Lichens are very sensitive to chemical pollution. So much so that the U.S.D.A. and the EPA use them as bioindicators of the air quality. It’s not really as simple as a lot of lichens meaning clean air they’ve got it down to a science. Lichenology is the study of lichens but what are they? By the time most of us take a real science class in school lichens are one of those classic examples of symbiosis. Two different species living as one. Its an algea and a fungus. But there’s a whole variety of different types of lichens. Not only do environmental scientists look at the volume of lichens but they also look at the variety because different types of lichens are sensitive to different types of pollution. By looking at charts and counting the numbers of types they can get a pretty accurate gauge of the types of toxins are in the air and therefore what’s in the rain, soil and water.

Because it’s the Christmas season, I’d be amiss if I didn’t mention that Santa’s sleigh runs on lichen. In the Winter months reindeer turn to reindeer moss for food. Come to think of it, tonight’s feature image does look as if a bite has been taken out of the lichens. And with the special night quickly approaching perhaps an advanced scout is out checking up folks in case of a last minute adjustment to the naughty and nice lists.
