A Tale Of The Iron Dragon

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Drennen Line 102020bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cold wind swirls around my head whispering memories of days gone by. Times when the voice of the horn rang out through the mountains and the ground shook with the thunder of iron wheels. Will we ever again see that steel dragon twist it’s way through the hills and valleys? Will fly over the rivers and streams on forged rails? Do I hear a long lonesome call above the rumble? Or is it just the echoes of what once was? The men of these mountains once pulled light from deep darkness and sent it to lands unseen. They defied the night overcame it’s cold grasp in the belly of the mountain itself to light the world.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Seeing Personally In The Fence Posts.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Pirate 100620bws” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I’ve always been attracted to old fences. Especially when the post has been out in the weather for a while and begins to take on a personality. Some might say it’s just pareidolia but I think it’s good old fashioned creativity. Michaelangelo said that he saw David in the stone before he began to carve away the excess material.

When I looked at the fence post in tonight’s Feature Image I saw the grimacing face of a pirate right down to the eye patch formed by the leaf. Because it’s Halloween night my imagination saw a small costume party.

Every costume party, good costume party, has a ghost. A little farther down the row I was visited by a ghost in full banshee scream. The wire of the fence even formed a shroud in my imagination.

Later when I stopped by the Carnifex Ferry Overlook I spotted another fence post that could have been dressed for a Halloween costume party. This was apparently coming as a robot. There was always at least one kid at every costume party wearing cardboard boxes painted silver and aluminum foil for accessories.

My closing thoughts for tonight are to never allow your imagination to grow up too much. After all, adulthood should in part be childhood without restrictions. That’s it for tonight friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The October Blue Jay Encounter

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Promise In Blue 102220a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the waning days of the sun draw towards their eventual close the leaves drop and uncover the world of birds. In the summer months the hidden avian population fills the breeze with utterance from well concealed perches. But as the world changes and forests begin to sleep a window opens for us to gaze on our companions.

It was near the foot of Panther Mountain Road that they became curious about the big blue truck parked on the quiet country lane. Like all of the Corvidae family the Blue Jays are highly intelligent and intelligence leads to inquisitive moments. I’m certain that they had been following the truck as I made my forrey into their territory. When I came to a stop the male was the first to brave the open contact on a bare branch.

His sharp eyes zeroed in on the open window of the cab. Naturally distrustful, he was determined to watch every move bade by the human behind the lens. After a few minutes he decided to circle around and sneak in a little closer to me. But what happened next reveals not just a high degree of thought but also sophisticated communication skills. With a few soft calls he brought out his mate who took a higher position in the tree. As soon as she signaled to him that she had her eyes locked on my position the male dropped from tree and flew unseen down the creek to pop up in the the trees on the other side of the bridge. His bride continued to observe but then a few more soft calls from the male and she began to move from branch to branch. She would drop to a lower branch and return to the top. Her tactics were successful because as I looked on trying to figure out what she was up to the male moved in and skimmed my windshield before taking up a branch directly above the truck. He squawks loudly above my head and when I stepped out of cab to see what he was up to the female flew unseen to cover and echoes his calls. My reflexes caused me to look to where she had gotten to and when I looked back the male was gone. I had been duped by a pair of birdbrains! I knew that I often stepped out of my door and had a Blue Jay cross my path and sound the alarm as it flew to warn other birds of an intruder but I never realized before that as I watched it’s antics it’s mate was probably sneaking away at the same time.

Thanks for spending time with me tonight and be blessed throughout your days.

Fading Away

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Fading Barn On Muddlety Creek 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The sands of time slowly erodes the work of our hands. I often pontificate about how time to mortal mankind is like a river of vapors that cannot be held back. It washes over this world and deposits gifts into our lives and then carries away our yesterdays. Such as it is with the old barn on Muddlety Creek. The once magnificent structure had rich tones of golden brown when I was a young man. No weeds or brush cluttered her door in those days and you could see it fully. Soon the rich tones of stained wood fades into weathered gray. Then the wood bends and warps as it melts into the landscape. The tin roof with it’s beautiful patina of rustic red is no longer able to shelter the hay inside. To my heartbreak a large section of roof is completely missing.

I compare the condition of the roof to a similar angle from December 07, 2018 and I know that my self appointed task to document the fall of the old barn is nearly complete. The day I find her completely on the ground will be a bittersweet moment. I will no longer be able to stand on the side of the road and listen to her whispers of the family who worked together beneath her shelter. But in truth, she’s ready for a well deserved rest. The river of time will sweep away the remnants and carry them beyond our perception. Scientists say that when we look out into space we are looking into the past. The Supernova that will be seen by those who gaze across the stars actually happened thousands of years ago. Is it so to imagine that if the ripples in time’s river can be carried across the void to touch mankind’s vision that somewhere in the universe that the old barn is still in her prime and enjoying the company of her family?

And with that final thought I bid you all goodnight and hope you are blessed throughout your days.

The October Echoes

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Ebbing 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Standing on the shore of Summersville Lake as it returns to winter pool is a surreal feeling. Knowing that this was once farms and forests makes me feel as though a grave is being opened before my eyes to reveal bones of stone. I’m drawn into the world of the past as I wonder about the conversations spoken on trails that have been washed away from decades of flooding. The trails are gone but the voices still echo near the foundation of a silo on the distant shore. Their words are indistinct but the tone is one of family and friendship enjoyed as a hard day’s work comes to a welcomed close above the river. Other voices come from a general store as horses trot by the doorway while neighbors make plans for a harvest celebration. Clouds roll through the October sky to greet the geese in formation as they travel south. The geese honk to each other and on the ground below a whimsical child responds with the bulb horn of his father’s model T. Are there ghosts in the bottom of the lake? Or are they just echoes of the heart longing for a connection to the past?

Don’t take a single moment for granted friends and be blessed throughout your days .
