Taking A Few Minutes To Enjoy A Peaceful Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 12420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the night shrinks away in the glow of the morning sun the clouds retreat into the horizon. The peaceful sky is mirrored by the upper Kanawha River as the local ducks glide in for a landing on the far side of the water. As their ripples proceed them small fish leap forward and dive into the safety of the deep. The remnant clouds marble the sky in layers and golden rays breech the ridge. There’s still a bit of a chill in morning air which smells of woodsmoke mingled with the coffee in my tumbler. On this particular morning the forest is silent save only the droning roar of the water spilling over the dam and the rocks below. In the coming days the rain will return but for now there is peace.

The Beauty Of Blue and Green

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Walnut Tree 12420″and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The weather breaks for a short time while old man winter draws his next breath. We typically feel his next icy blast sometime around Valentines Day.

Meanwhile in the valley the Kanawha River runs strong and steady on its perpetual march to the Ohio River. A few water birds are seen playing follow the leader on the other side but even my 400 mm lens is too weak for a good shot at that range. I’ve seen what looks like a Hooded Merganser paddling in the flat water above the falls but I haven’t been able to get close enough to be sure. One by one the ducks take off from the river and sail over the falls. So I take out my phone and go for a vertical panoramic of the Walnut Tree on the lot. It’s an ancient tree and it’s massive crown seems to reach out and tickle the clouds as the roll by. I have to work quickly because I only have a few minutes for the stop and so after the shots are taken I climb back up into the big blue truck throw the phone on charge. Later as I do my touch ups and edits I noticed that the grass in the photo is no longer dry and brown as it was just three short weeks ago. Instead it’s fresh and green. Last year I noticed that some of tree buds had begun to swell near the end of February and the green grass is just one more sign that nature us slowly beginning to stir.

Overflow

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Overflow 102219” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The hydroelectric dam at Glen Ferris is well integrated with natural beauty of Kanawha Falls. The lake formed by the same is often mirror smooth. The dam is an overflow dam and with the exception of that water that’s channed into the turbines it sweeps over the edge of dam. At the right angles it looks like a hole in the river. Below the dam the leading edge of the flow looks like liquid glass which shatters on the rocks below only to coalesce again as it makes it’s way to merge with the Ohio River.

The Soft Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Soft Morning 11620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The tires on my big blue truck drone out a hum as I leave my beloved mountain for my morning commute. Mid January blesses my life with the morning sun and occasional blue sky broken by the remnants of a passing storm. A slightly opened sideglass allows the crisp morning air to mix with heat coming from the dashboard. The aroma of my morning coffee is stirred up by the circulating air. The river is up slightly from the rain but not so much as to be a threat as I ease off of the road. The sun hasn’t quite topped the mountains but broadcasts it’s light over the ridge giving the illusion of a double sunrise. I paused the playback coming from the speakers in the cab and opened the door. In spite of bright morning a cold wind is spilling over the hills and racing across the three rivers but I don’t really care. All I need at this moment is light, the mountains and river and a little peace of mind. The chill of the wind eventually drives me back into the warmth of the truck and a sip of hot coffee. Like the river, time keeps flowing and drawing me forward to my next destination.

Alone On The River

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Alone On The River” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

A few leaves cling to the branches and the river has taken on the cool green hue it often shows in winter. Most of the songbirds have either moved South or settled in for the winter. The cold North wind whispers a lulaby as it moves through the empty forest. My big blue truck eases off of the pavement and into gravel lot on the edge of the Kanawha River.

At the far range of my lens the single sycamore stands tall among the maples and oaks. The pure white barks also stands out giving the tree the appearance of priesthood. The sycamore reaches skyward with its limbs asking God for protection from the winter storms on behalf of its sleeping wooden flock.

It’s not hard to imagine that the sycamore is a priestly tree. In the Book of Exodus chapter 15:25 God instructs Moses to cast a tree into bitter waters to make them sweet. I’ve always imagined that it was a sycamore tree. Partly because the sycamore has the ability to filter contaminated water.

Wilderness survivalists are taught to tap into a sycamore tree to get a drink in areas where the water isn’t thought to potable. Special cells in the vessels of sycamore function like a filter to clean the water. It’s not a magic bullet but it’s said to be effective in removing waterborne diseases. Chemical contamination might be a different story though.

Yes. The sycamore has to be a special tree indeed I tell myself as the wintery scene echoes in my lens.
