A Time For Rest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Crescent Butterfly 72821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Softly the little Crescent Butterfly comes to rest on the leaf. She doesn’t pump her wings or crawl about looking for a bloom to sip from. She simply rests from a day’s work. She’s probably covered untold miles laying eggs and sipping nectar but at the end of her day she’ll simply rest up and gather all her energy for the next round of important work. And I too am ready for a moment of recouping. The dream world awaits my presence tonight.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Ruby Meadowhawk

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Ruby Meadowhawk 72021a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The red dragonfly sits carefully on his perch scanning for the flight pattern of his prey. His sharp eyes are genetically tuned for certain movements and he can see in almost a full circle. His powerful wings are like loaded springs waiting for the pull of a trigger. The mosquito rises up from the water’s surface and the dragonfly feels his feet leave the leaf as his wings engage the humid air. From his perspective the world seems to be in slow motion. The blink of a human eye is three hundred milliseconds but the dragonfly’s reaction time is only fifty milliseconds as he closes in on his prey. The mosquito seems to be frozen in time as the dragonfly maneuvers through the reeds. In truth, I had my camera in burst mode and the dragonfly completely vanished between frames. Yes, they’re that fast. It’s said by scientists that a dragonfly can fly at sixty miles per hour. And my observation is that they can go from zero to sixty in less than a second. While hunting they can even fly upside down in order to catch those nasty mosquitos. By comparison, a hummingbird flies at thirty miles per hour and can only reach sixty miles per hour by diving straight down while flapping their wings as hard as they can. ( Which is something hummingbirds do as part of their mating ritual. ) But I suppose that twice the number of wings means twice the speed. Much like hummingbirds dragonflies incorporate their whole body into their aerobatics. By changing the angle of their body they change the traction that their wings generate and can even turn around 360° in mid flight. Engineers are actually studying how dragonflies maneuve in order to create more efficient drones. In terms of scale speed a human being would pass out from the G forces that a dragonfly produces while just hunting. Even though I didn’t catch it on camera that sudden stop when the dragonfly returned to his favorite perch was as equally impressive as the flight.

The appearance of the dragonflies marks the midsummer page of my natural calendar and while I enjoy all of the varieties of dragonflies I think that the red ones are my favorite.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

King Of The Meadow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “King Of The Meadow 72021a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck calls to me in the early morning. “Today’s my day. Let’s go for a drive.” He says. So not being one to deny ol’ Blue when he’s feeling neglected I grabbed the keys and headed out to cover the normal circuit. Along the way I noticed that the mid summer blooms are really starting to come on. Among them is tall meadow rue. Also known as “King Of The Meadow”. Large clusters of star-like flowers form clouds on the edge of the quiet lane. Within them tiny solitary bees navigate through the dense flora with ease. From their perspective it must seem like entering another world. A magical place where only they can enjoy from the inside. And we are left to peer in with wonderment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Sunshine And Friends

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunshine And Friends 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A splash of lightning foretells a rumble of thunder as my big blue truck breaks through the downpour. The storms provide a welcome change from the jungle like heart and humidity of the Appalachian Summer. I’ve had a chance to leave my mountain and run a few errands in the Kanawha Valley so as always I bring my camera. After the storm passes I consider the golden dome of the capitol building with its magnificent oaks and historical statues but there is no inspiration for me there today. A quick side trip to the airport leaves me just as unmoved. Perhaps a few spots that I’m aware of on the river will have a good opportunity for me. And there along the public stream access I find the Loosestrife is in bloom. And it’s being visited by a flutter of little skipper butterflies. While they’re typically territorial today I observed that they were quite cordial and happy to share the pinkish purple flowers. Maybe it’s the fresh sunshine after a storm or perhaps like the name implies Loosestrife has some sort of calming effect on them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Within The Ripples

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Within The Ripples 71521a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool green pools beckon the weary of heat and humidity. A chance to simply take the step and be immersed within the rippling stream in cool shade in that spot where the springs join the creek. The ripples echo laughter of years gone by when children raced sticks and leaves within the the current’s flow. Small fish look in awe at the new object which is intruding on their domain. To them the giant is all toe. “What’s a toe?” One fish asked. To which the other replies, “It’s like a fin only thick and stubby.” Having satisfied their curiosity they swim off to the shelter beneath the limbs and leaves that gently touch the surface. As the cool water refreshes the body eyes glance along the pebbles in memory of past treasures found. A small fossil here or a worn arrowhead there. Bits of glass polished as they tumble down the stream bed. All would have been carried home and tucked away in a special place many years ago. The bottom of a stream is like the lost and found department of the forest. A place where children of all ages can become an archeologist as they escape the sun’s gaze for just a few moments. The ripples touch everything including those who lose themselves and are carried away from the outside world.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
