Quiet Time At Cathedral Falls In Spring 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Quiet Time At Cathedral Falls 42821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia is one of our most popular destinations. It’s a small park. So small that you wouldn’t even have enough room to park a dozen vehicles comfortably. The pathway to the base of the Falls is little more than a deer trail but crossing the creek on the wooden foot bridge is like entering another world where the trappings of modern life cannot pass. Oh sure, you still have cell signal. You can sit down on a rock or a log and stay on the internet until you’re battery is completely drained. But your desire to do so is left behind on the other side of that little wooden bridge. You do need a good pair of river shoes. Something that can handle the mud of the trail and the alga on the rocks in the water for safety sake. I chose a pair of completely rubber sandals because the base of the Falls is usually covered by an inch or two of water outside the pool at bottom. A small island of dry gravel provides just enough space to keep my gear dry as I begin to work.

The voice of the Falls is loud enough to push away the noise of the highway less than a hundred yards from the spot but gentle enough to make for a peaceful setting. A constant breeze is drawn down the cliff face by the flowing water and forms a protective shield against the biting insects. A small group of what appears to be cliff swallows glides through the small box canyon and up into a crevasse to disappear inside the rock as nature plays out the lyrics of the hymn Rock Of Ages. The mountain receives them effortlessly and they stay in their shelter for the whole time that I was there.

With the little birds tucked away safe in their hole I turn my attention to the falls and the logs that lay at the bottom.

This has always been a place where you can find your quiet time. The beauty of the mountains seems to focus on this spot. I imagine that people came here to get away from whatever daily stress they had even as far back as the Adena and beyond. I can envision what it looked like before the road and nearby town. The Appalachian Wildflowers were in great abundance and the little creek was teaming with “crawldads” ( crayfish ). A lone Adena sits by the pool at the bottom and selects certain pieces of slate shale for his tools and art. The stone isn’t as hard as flint but flint is a rare find here. He patiently grinds out points for hunting and hooks for fishing. Using a small piece of granite or sandstone he engraves a suckerfish into a large piece of black state. This was an emblem of his people and they relied heavily on the species. He may not have known my God but he appreciated the world that was created for him.

I sometimes wonder who was more civilized. The people who go about their lives in a rush to get things done or those who simply existed in a world where most things they needed were at their fingertips? I suppose that I’m just blessed to have the best of both worlds when all I have to do is step across that little wooden bridge and enter a natural cathedral.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Peaceful Moment Under The Dogwoods

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Afternoon Prayers 41921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A mild sun ebbs towards it’s resting place behind the far ridge. The sweet aroma of multiple wildflowers drifts down the creek. Most of the songbirds are engaged in a conversation between themselves. All except for one chickadee that seems to follow me as I wander around the foot of the mountain. Since I’ve begun feeding the local songbirds several have caught on to the fact that I’m the one who fills their feeders and chases away the predators. I’ve even managed to train my little buddy “Scout” to know the difference between our songbirds and the “Bad Birds”. The crows are the bad birds. They not only rob the feeders but will also raid the songbird’s nests and steal fledglings. So Scout has learned to bark at crows and keep them away but will sit quietly and watch the songbirds without making a whimper. However, today he stays curled up on his pillow. I’m working too close to the highway for our comfort.

Some places seem to have a spirit of their own. Not in the sense that people have a spirit or that animals sometimes express but a feeling of “sacredness”. As though this spot is a place where God walks seeking a conversation with his children. And not the type of conversation where the believers pour out their troubles in list of needs and desires or a list of sins that are to be confessed but a simple visitation. Perhaps a few words of gratitude for the ordinary miracles of daily life. The singing of the birds, the smell of the forest or the beautiful skyscape that is enjoyed as seen though a lacy screen of Dogwood flowers. Every moment is a gift that is not to be wasted.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Fading Redbud

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Redbud 41921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The gentle hum of the honeybees is only broken by melodic tones of the songbirds. Today as I strode out to complete a few projects the flycatchers fledglings began to shoot out of the nest. One by one they seemed pop out and introduce themselves to me as I worked on the front porch. They were born and raised a mere two feet from my door so they don’t really seem to mind me being so close. They lumber about clumsily for a few moments until instincts kick in and they are accepted into the wind. They all headed into the little thicket at the edge of the yard and by the time I got back with my camera they’d disappeared again. But they did lead me to the last of the redbud bloom.

The delicate pink flowers only seem to last a few weeks. As they fade away the dogwoods come into bloom and for a very short period we’re blessed with both on my mountain. As the pink, pea-like flowers fade and drop to the ground the leaves are forming and everything is becoming lush green. The Buckeye has started to put forth its floral spikes and the next beauty I look forward to is the mountain Magnolia with it’s large white flowers. I’ve located a few that I hope will bloom close enough to ground level that I can get some nice closeup shots of.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Pursuing A Challenge

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Breath Of Spring 41921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sometimes life just bursts onto the scene in its full glory. Other times it seems to amble up in it own sweet time.  Such is the case with the local Dogwoods and the Eastern Towhee. Most of the Dogwoods nearby are either on a neighbor’s property or on a steep embankment that makes dragging a heavy pack of photography equipment risky for both the lens and the photographer. I do have access to a few that are fairly easy to reach but they’re higher elevation and won’t be ready for a closeup for a while. One of the great advantages of living in the mountains is that if I miss a chance in the lower landscape I can get a second chance in a few days.  As I stood on my property line and calmed my mind to open my senses the Eastern Towhee whose been spotted at my feeders can be heard but not seen. His beautiful trills seem to echo from every tree but are strongest coming from the thicket about sixty feet up the mountain. A bench in the hill blocks my view of the spot and so I sit and listen. Eventually I hear the flutter of wings and he moves like a living missile through the bush coming to rest in the large Dogwood Tree on the other side of the creek. Or so I thought. The tiny bird didn’t stay long enough to focus the lens but he did draw my attention to the Dogwood in full bloom. In some ways I’m glad he got away again leaving me with a challenge to pursue all season.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Return Of The Honeyees

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Afternoon Visitor 41921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The small things in life are often among the most important. Three years ago all of the Honeybees seemed to vanish from my area. The native solitary bees seemed to fill the gap and even increased their numbers as more food was available to them. But honeybees are special. Last year I noticed a slight increase in the numbers of honeybees on my mountain and this year I was overjoyed to see that pattern repeating. Just beyond my property line is land that belongs to the timber company. It’s seldom used. In fact I’ve never seen the first timber company employee there. The landscape is untouched for the most part. Only the power line right of way is occasionally trimmed back. The trimmings are left where they fall to return to nature and replenish the soil. It’s the perfect environment for the wild geraniums. My wife had noticed that the light was striking a patch of the geraniums just right and suggested that take my lens and capture them in their full glory. As I knelt down to get the best angle I noticed movement. And then another one, and another one. Here and there I noticed the shaking of the blossoms. Before I knew it I was surrounded by the tiny workers who were steadily working on the purple flowers. And the flowers responded by releasing even more of their sweet fragrance. And there was more than I’ve seen in several years. It wasn’t long before the hum of their wings could be heard and flowers were shaking up to the edge of the rocks. I’ve also noticed that the hornet population has been dwindling which I credit to the songbirds. I’ve watched as they go after the nest and pick it apart harvesting the larve before they become hornets. Hornets of course raid honeybee hives and can decimate a colony. But the songbirds may be playing a role in restoring the balance. Irregardless I’m happy to see the honeybee numbers increase.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
