A Quiet Moment Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Dutchman’s Breeches 32621a ” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The scent of the fresh earth rises up from the forest floor as I search the fallen leaves for signs of the emerging Spring. Care must be taken to not disturb any forest dwellers that hide just below the leaf layer. So I extend my monopod and poke around a bit looking for movement. I’ve never found a viper in this area but there’s a first time for everything. Just above me a chipmunk scurries to the other end of the fallen tree and disappears into the thick leaf layer.

Image Titled “Grass Spider 31721bw”.

A tiny grass spider discreetly climbs from under a nearby leaf and quietly yields right of way to the giant kneeling down in her domain. She’s only interested in remaining invisible and is soon gone. Without her kind I’d be overrun with pests and so I wait patiently for her to be one her way. This is her property too and she has the right to be here.

Looking up to the Dutchman’s Breeches I see that most of them are now open. I know that when they are here that it’s not long before the bluebells arrive. I missed them last year and I’ve been looking forward to a second chance to capture their beauty as well. Mostly I just take a moment to enjoy the outdoors and a little peace of mind.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Embracing The Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Embracing The Light 33121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The tranquil flow of the water fills my ears as I walk along the edge of creek. My only blooming daffodil hasn’t fully opened yet but I can’t really blame her. I like to sleep in too. The box elder and Buckeye are really starting to green up and today I found a small ring neck snake curled up under a sign that had fallen. The little snake was barely two inches long and a little chilled from the cool night air. I gently lifted him from the ground and placed him under a fallen tree to find shelter before replacing the sign. Bye and bye the warm light begins to spill over the mountains and find the spot that has become my forest sanctuary. The small mottled leaves that I found pushing their way through the forest floor a mere week ago are now fully open and a golden bloom has risen from their base. The leaves seem to stretch out like open arms that embrace the new light. The life of a trout lily is short but it’s learned that a full life comes from the new light and it fully receives what is given. And thus it’s short life is a full life and well lived.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Little Blessings Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Little Blessings” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Me feet carefully tread the soft grounds of the forest floor.  I’m surrounded by new life who’s little faces dot the moss covered hillside like earthbound stars. The empty boles now show the tiniest signs of swelling buds ready to burst forth in lush green glory. Swarms of Swallowtail Butterflies play gleefully in the breeze and a purple tinge to the forest edge tells me that the Redbud is gathering strength and will soon paint the landscape with it’s sweet bloom. The long nap of the mountains is nearly over. I’d wager that somewhere in the deep bush that new eyes open for the first time. Wobbly legs feel the earth beneath fresh hooves and will soon race the wind just because they can. And as they nap in the dense thickets new voices join the chorus of the Spring. The world is renewed once again with all these little blessings.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Ancient Witness

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Ancient Witness 32321a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The ancient tree stands alone on the vacant hill. For centuries it has witnessed the world from its vantage point. It is among the last of its kind. When it was young there was only forest. Trees as far as the eye could see! All of them were giants with strong roots that held deep in the earth clinging to a millenia of foundation. The time came for them to yield up their timber to build a new nation and because it was a just cause the forest agreed requesting that one be spared to hold their history. As the decades progressed the tree grew and saw many wonders. The new nation flourished and soon it oversaw the people as they lovingly worked the rich landscape both above and below the mountains. Often churches gathered beneath it’s branches in fellowship and worship and the tree thrived as the people were blessed. War returned to landscape and yet even amidst smoke of black powder and the thunder of cannons the observed that there were times when the guns fell silent and the men gathered together in worship of the same God. Then peace returned and once again loving hands worked in soil and tended to the animals. In those times the congregation gathered in fellowship and worship but also to play a new game. The game was baseball and at times it bore a resemblance to war except that it ended in laughter and a bonding of the people. By this time a strange buggy rolled over the mountains with a puttering noise and loud bangs that frightened the animals. The people called it a Model T. More decades passed and this time there was two more wars but those were in other lands where the tree couldn’t witness. The only way that the tree even knew that there was war was by the yellow ribbon and special services beneath its boughs. Afterwards, the time of plenty returned to the landscape and the people were generally happy. There was no more war for a while. Only what the people called conflicts. The ancient tree supposed that was better but didn’t really understand the difference. The world was changing rapidly now. There had been devices in space and worldwide communications. The loud Model T had been replaced numerous times with sleeker and quieter buggies. However, all but a few gathered around the tree to sing hymns or play games. The old tree found comfort in the sheltering of the animals and the gentle voice of the farmer who cared for them. Time had remained the same but the speed of life had gotten so fast that the ancient witness was dumbfounded about how to recall it all. And yet it still stands in it’s ancestral home with it’s branches stretched out in welcome and in faith that the people themselves will gather in fellowship once more. Even if it’s only in their hearts.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

False Rue Anemone During The Evening Chorus

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “False Rue Anemone 32621a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Twilight falls early here on the dark side of my mountain. In burgeoning days of Spring I am overjoyed to have a little light to work with at the end of the day. So I stroll out to my forest sanctuary on the edge of my property and welcome the awakening wildflowers back into my life. Their rising starts slowly. The first few are always seated in just the right place to catch the last few rays of the sun as it swiftly fades behind the far ridge. Magic hour has arrived! Magic hour is the fleeting moment between the full strength of the sun and the moment that the dusk to dawn lights come on. The songbirds are joined by Spring Peepers and together their lullaby sings the light to sleep. The night winds spill over the mountains and rattle the few remaining fall leaves on the young beech trees. They flutter in small bursts to add rhythm to the evening chorus. The hillside is dotted with the tiny glory of the early blooms. As I looked down at my feet the False Rue Anemone seemed to call my name and beckoned me to take her portrait. She is the essence of simple beauty in the evening. Her perfect petals and upward gaze standing just above the outstretched leaves form the welcoming gesture of nature. I snapped the shutter and added her smile to my collection to pull out and enjoy forever.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
