Recalling A Summer Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Daisy Fleabane 62020” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As I sit quietly waiting for the awakening of nature I close my eyes and recall the warmth of the sun on my face. The cool grass is tender and green and the smell of a fresh cut lawn fills the breeze. There’s even a little hint of the water mint that graces my creek bed. Just above the sound of wind in my ears I can hear the drone of a Carpenter bee as she floats effortlessly from flower to flower. Native flowers greet the sun with a pleasant smile as they gaze skyward and await the passing of the puffy white clouds. Occasionally I hear a small splash from the creek as the minnows navigate through the shallow shoals. The red-tailed Hawk that’s taken up residence higher on the mountain soars overhead and casts a shadow that seems to fill the yard and everything goes silent for a moment as he disappears again behind the ridges. It doesn’t take long for the songbirds to sing again after he’s gone and I pause to capture this moment to hold in my heart and have forever.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Red Alder In Full Bloom

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Red Alder In Full Bloom 31120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

It’s no secret that Spring is my favorite time of year. Especially after the time change when the daylight is more accessible. Almost daily I can go to one of those special places where the growing things live and witness a new change. One year ago today I happened up this Red Alder and it was in full bloom. There was no showy pedals and no green leaves but the beauty of the flowers were not diminished in the least. The catkins are heavy with pollen and the cones are fully open. March through May is one of 2 fire seasons in my area which means that the dry windy conditions make it too risky for outdoor burning. But it’s those same dry winds that spread life throughout the mountains. The Alder, Maples and Oaks as well as the pine all rely on the dry conditions and Spring breezes to spread the pollen in the spring. The Alder always signals that in two or three weeks the tiny flowers like the Carolina Beauty are about to open. There’s always a little variation in the exact time but it should be soon. If you’re plans include a garden this year then when you see Alder bloom it’s time to build boxes and start watching the soil to be ready.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Minutes With The Giggling Stream

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Gentle Moments 30320” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The trickling sounds of gently falling water captures my heart and draws me into the edge of my forest. The little stream proudly displays itself as winds down the mountain from places unseen. As it makes it’s way to the river it playfully tosses the leaves and twigs where it may. The small streams have always carried a childlike spirit of innocence to me. As it flows through the forest floor and over the various stones the sounds of the the stream are more like giggling in my ears. I’ve always imagined that the water tickles the roots of the trees in mischievous play. It would be a challenge indeed to see if you could make a mighty oak lose it’s composure and laugh uncontrollably. And perhaps the odd creaking and groaning sometimes heard in the forest is just the way they laugh when a creek tickles their feet. And then somewhere in the forest the creek forms small pools where a magical jelly springs to life and becomes a school of tadpoles and the red eft waits patiently to change it’s color and return to the aquatic world that spawned it. Somewhere that’s not too far from the water but higher up on the mountain a small clay chimney rises from the leaves. This is where the blue crayfish dwells. Though seldom seen today they roam the dry land and return to their holes only to rest. And only a little farther upstream a doe takes a drink from the fresh cool water and waits in the thicket for the little one to join the world in just a few weeks. All are connected by the playful little stream and perhaps it giggles because it knows all the secrets of the forest.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Sunbeams In The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunbeams In The Forest 22321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A Cardinal and his mate sing out their melodies in a conversation known only to those who find true love. Their voices carry above the background of the morning chorus. The breeze is gentle and smells of the fresh moss and morning dew. A little fluff of down leftover from an unknown flower carries its single seed in hopes of finding fertile ground to spawn new life in the coming months. Some might say that it’s unseasonably warm but I think that the seasons know what they’re doing and don’t need advice from mankind. The sun casts it’s glow across the mountains to sweep away the remanent of shadows from the forest floor. The darkness evaporates back into the ether and reveals that resilient green that knows the light and reaches through a blanket of duff and leaves to embrace the solar blessings. It’s new life on a new day and a chance become more than yesterday could define. May it be so with the rest of us. Good advice from a little clump of simple moss. Hold your ground in the darkness and reach for the heavens when you have the chance. Don’t worry about how fast you can grow. Just grow steadily.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Little Tranquility By The Waterfall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Tranquility 22420” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

In the quiet moments there is clarity of mind and spirit. It’s that recharge moment when we can push back the noise of the outside world and remember ourselves as we truly are. As I stand before the little waterfall I can smell the fresh air. The falls are not particularly large nor do they drop a great distance. But they do carry peace and tranquility. The gentle sound of trickling water hitting the pool washes out the clutter of messages that invade the mind on a daily basis. Sometimes we wonder where all the great thinkers are? Where are the inventors and philosophers? The enlightened ministers? All the great minds of the past seem silent today. But the truth is that they haven’t really gone anywhere. They are us. It’s just that I in the past our minds were free from the constant distraction of competing messages from media and the internet. There was less pressure to be something else on someone else’s behalf and our time was our own. We could find our questions and sort out our answers. All of the famous Greek Philosophers advised us to spend time in nature and still the mind. It’s my belief that if we can just a few minutes every day to enjoy a waterfall or listen to the birds or even just find a quiet place to let the wind touch us that it does wonders for our mental and spiritual health. Be at peace in your life. Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
