The Meaning of A Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Magic 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There’s definitely something to be said for those times when the outside world can’t really reach you. When you can simply exist as part of creation without a particular schedule of tasks to complete. It’s amazing what a human being can be when the chains of society fall away and rattle to the ground. Looking into the world instead of at the world comes within reach. Photographers are supposed to be mindful of time. We’re told that our magic power is to freeze time and find the meaning of a moment. It’s also said that life as we experience it on Earth is a series of moments. Therefore, if each life has a moment then it has a meaning. But if we allow those moments to be cluttered with too many outside demands then the meaning is obscure and we find ourselves searching. We try fit things into that moment that doesn’t belong there. We tell ourselves that because the clutter fills the spot where the meaningfulness would be that we’ve accomplished something. And thus because the space has been filled with something we repeat repeat the pattern of substitution over and over not realizing that there was something more to it than just filling the space. And yet on a subconscious level we instinctively know that it wasn’t satisfying. The result is that we lose our peace. As I said, photographers are supposed to find the meaning in a moment. But here’s the catch. Only you can know what your moment is meant to be. We can only find it when it’s in its spot. So take a little time and push the outside world away. Stand under the sky. Flow with water and feel the sun. And in that tranquil moment let the meaning reveal itself.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Fish Tale For October 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Touching The Surface 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A gentle wind sweeps across the big river in early Fall. It’s slightest touch causes the ripples to form on the surface. To me they resemble tiny little dunes. Above the overflow dam the river’s surface normally is normally a perfect mirror of the sky but the wind brings a minor distortion. The eddies near the edge carry a fallen leaf in their backflow. It sails along content with the change in destination. Between the bright reflections of the clouds in the sky I can see a shadow lurking above battered branches and stones at the bottom. I know what he’s thinking. “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.” The montra is the same for all hunters and certain athletes. The idea is that a twitch offers a chance to err and miss the target. The day is often won by perfect timing rather than a sudden burst. In one fluid flip of his powerful tail he breeches the surface slightly with jaws spread wide and takes the leaf to the murky depths. The only sound is a subtle “bloop” rather than a loud splash as he rolls back down with his prize and leaves ripples of his own. Not being a vegan fish he immediately released the leaf to resume its journey against the main current. The winner of the day was the leaf. I’d hoped to catch the fish in mid air dramatically breaching the surface and the fish had hoped to fill his belly with a free meal. Perhaps the next time at least one of us will be successful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Reflections On An October Morning

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reflections On An October Morning 100421a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The lid pops open on my thermos releasing the aroma of fresh coffee in the big blue truck. Mists rise slowly from the mountains that admire themselves in their reflection on surface of the big river. The lone cormorant peacefully glides just below the mirror of the water’s surface. Just before it dives to the unseen world below I noticed the rusty tinge in the mountains. The changing season is well underway. I look forward to the brilliant yellows, reds and oranges of the Appalachian Fall. This time of year makes me crave the smell of fresh split firewood a flannel shirt and smooth feeling of a hickory handle on an old fashioned axe. I picture days past of the work party gathering a truckload of firewood from the tree that fell last year. The droning of a chainsaw and banter of friends as the once mighty oak is parted out to the different houses. We have many houses among friends but only one home and one family. Later in the day the work is done and the pickup trucks parked in a row. The tailgate is dropped for lunch and the radio is tuned into the game. Small piles of sawdust are scattered on the ground as the last load of wood is carried out. It felt like work back then but it was more than just putting up wood for winter. It was a gift of time together and making of memories.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Sentinel Over The Water

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sentinel Over The Water 101121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck drifts slowly along the quiet countryside as I carefully observe the landscape for movement along the creek. His swift wings carry him from a branch near the road to his chosen station above the water as they have many times before. Except this time there’s no chattering alarm call. Kingfishers are the self-appointed tattle-tells of the forest on my mountain. Along with the Bluejays and crows they feel that it’s their sworn duty to abruptly annouce the arrival of any humans. I’ve actually been trying to get a decent photo of this little guy since Spring of last year. Usually if I get within fifty yards of his perch he takes to the wind and shatters the silence with his rattling call. (Video is not mine but it is a great example)

However, on this particular day I must have caught him daydreaming because I was able to get closer than ever. The exception being that sometimes if I’m out in the yard doing chores he’ll circle above me and mark my position with the same call before disappearing upstream. The ruckus of course always sends the other wildlife fleeing for the dense clusters of bushes on the other side of the mountain. I was happy to get this close to him but I think that with a little more luck I can get closer. It may even be that with enough regular encounters I might even gain a little trust. Unlike the other songbirds of my mountain the kingfishers seem to only be interested in live food. They feed mainly on the minnows or sometimes they go for salamanders or frogs but they have no interest in the seeds or suet I stock the feeders with. So they don’t really see people as an asset like the other birds do. The Bluejays have even gotten somewhat used to me and have made the connection between me and the free meals they enjoy all winter. The kingfishers will take a little more work I suppose.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Return Of My Cool Weather Friends

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Rose Hips 100121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The light fills the landscape with its ever shifting tones of amber. The breeze is soft and gentle and even though it’s already October I still see an occasional butterfly meandering through whatever patch of nature I inhabit. It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve seen the hummingbirds and yet I’m reluctant to pull down the feeders. I suppose that my tiny summer companions are in Florida by now soaking up the sun and bringing joy to another patron. But I’m not too sad. The little Corlina wrens have returned to find fresh feed in their feeders along with plenty of suet hung out. The roses have faded and in their are full plump hips. Off in the distance I spotted the bright red of one of my cardnials peeking out from the thick bushes and staking out his claim of the best perches in my yard. My mornings are crisp and full of songs as the little ones greet the day. There’s no lack of joyfullness in my mountains. Just different sources of it as the season shifts.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
