And Two Become One

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “And Two Become One 3420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The two little streams run through the hills giggling as they tickle the exposed roots of the trees.

Gleefully they turn over small stones and leap from the large ones as they play together in the forest.

For a moment they pool together and swirl like dancing lovers as a lone dove calls a slow tune.

The two little streams playfully part once more and return to the game of running down the hill.

Their excitement builds up as the see the last falls approach in the distance and finally they stretch and reach for each other.

Two become one as they embrace and merge together. They will need the strength and courage of each other to make the last leap into the valley below and strive for their final destination in the sea.

An Imaginary Trip Into The Past

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Shadyside Cascades 3420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As a crept softly through the moss covered landscape the Cardnials dart excitedly through the thick underbrush. They’re engaged in their mating rituals that are as old as the forest itself. It still a bit early but I’m betting that if I was here st the right time I could spot an eft making it’s way back to the water for the last time before becoming fully aquatic once more. Perhaps this is something that I should watch for in the days ahead. I’m particularly drawn to this section of my property. The steep landscape makes it a challenge to go very deep into the mountain with my camera equipment during the wet season when the alluvial terrain makes foot placement crucial. But that’s also the season that yields the best flow of the little streams that feed Little Elk Creek. Especially now that the moss has begun to colonize the rocks that line the stream. I expect that in the upcoming years that it will grow thick and plush bringing a primeval feel to this little hidden sanctuary. As I admire the soft green surroundings and the flow of hundreds of little cascades it’s easy to imagine that the stream flows from some hidden ancient temple deep in the forest. And that if I could trace it to the source I’d be sure to find some pre-columbian treasure. Not gold or silver but worked stone points and effigies carved into the sandstone. Common items like the stone bowls used to grind hickory nuts into meal. In my imagination I can hear the women singing chants to rhythm created by stone pounding together. I can almost smell the jerked meats curing over a fire and hear the voices of the children as they play in the open forests.

As the shutter snaps closed the moss and peaceful flow of stream is preserved in my lens and the imaginary village is filed away to be recalled on another day.

The Morning Smile

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Morning Smile 3320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The saturated earth gives slightly as I tread out to my thinking spot. The warm day and time of year makes me a little more cautious about where I step just in case one of our pit vipers has awakened from hibernation early. I was on my way to to practice some long exposure techniques on the little drainage ditch that runs off of my mountain and into Little Elk Creek. And there it was. The smile from nature that I’ve been longing for since Christmas. The Harbinger Of Spring. To give you an idea of how small the flowers are the black speck is a flea beetle and about 1/10 of an inch long. The plant is also known as Pepper and Salt and the scientific name is Erigenia Bulbosa but I am partial to Harbinger Of Spring. According to Wikipedia it is the first wildflower to bloom in Spring but I’m a little dubious about the accuracy since my fly honeysuckle started opening a few days ago. Nevertheless, it is a most welcomed sight. It means that I’ll soon be seeing the Carolina Spring Beauty, Fiddleheads ( young fern fronds ) and the Trillium.

One thing that I agree with Wikipedia on is the importance of these tiny flowers for solitary bees like the mason bees that will emerge from their holes into a harsh world. Before 1622 solitary bees were the main pollenators in North America. It stands to reason that their lifestyle would be closely tied to early blooming plants like Harbinger Of Spring. I have looked around the area where I found this one and it seems to be the very first one to pop up on my place. It also wasn’t there yesterday ( or at least it wasn’t in bloom) because I was in the same spot and actually looking for any changes to forest floor. But from this day forward I expect to see life explode onto the scene.

Mental Vacation, March 2nd 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Game Of Tag” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As I sit at my desk and look out of the window the rain seems to melt the outside world.

The Gray Veil113019

With my natural view obscured by the gray veil outside my window I don my headphones and call up the sounds of warm summer day. I comfortably close my eyes in reminiscence of a sunny Sumer day. I can hear a bluebird in the soundtrack and my imagination builds him in detail. I can see the white highlights in his feathers and the dark fringes on his wings and tail feathers. His ruddy Brest puffs out and he resembles a little ball of fluff just before he releases his song into the breeze. I find myself taking a deep breath and I can smell the fresh cut grass mingled with the water mint in the creek. I can feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the grass tickles my bare feet. Movement on the edge of my field of vision catches my attention as the tiger stripe Swallowtails engage in aerobatics during a game of tag. The yellow male matches the black female as she dives and loops. She finds a thermal updraft and climbs high. At the apex of her climb she seems to be suspended weightless and rolls to one side as she dives for the vegetation. It looks as though she gave her pursuer the slip but he was ready. He had anticipated her maneuver and pulled up short allowing him to intercept her from below. He thinks that he’s won but this is her game and it’s not over until she says so. The two butterflies continue to circle each other in the air until they disappear into the forest.

The soundtrack in my earbuds ends at about the same time as my mental image allows the butterflies to slip away until the next time I need a break from the gray world of winter and I open my eyes. The work in front of me must be completed so I go back to the task… And yet, I could swear that the smell of fresh cut grass and mint still lingered in the air.

Late Winter Solitude

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Late Winter Solitude” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The February sky turns to the soft pastel colors of the days end as the big blue truck delivers me to the open field near my day job. The site is actually an abandoned strip mine that’s transformed into anindustrial park. Rabbits and deer now run where the heavy equipment once shook the earth. On occasion we even see coyotes prowling the broom sedge and lespedeza. Countless songbirds hide in the scrubby bushes that dot the old mine. Rising from the sea of dry grasses this little Virginia Pine stands out as a lone sentinel observing the rebirth of the forest. When I first spotted it it was just tall enough to stand out from the rest of the vegetation and year after year it grows stronger. Last year it even survived a tornado! And I’m glad it’s still there because it gives me sense of peace and solitude to see it silhouetted against the sky immune from the sirens and chaos of the city below. Just beyond the horizon and below the mountains in the background major interstate highways buzz with the sounds of the passing engines but here beneath the twisted branches of a lone pine all you can hear is the birds singing and the wind blowing along with your innermost thoughts and dreams of what might be.
