From Green To Gold

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “From Green To Gold 91621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The song in my heart plays a soft native flute as I tread gently beneath the river birch. It’s only a few notes that repeat but it sets a mood as I walk. I looked closely at the salmon pink bark that curls out from the trunk. I look for any hidden wildlife that might seek shelter from the sun within the shadows but this time nothing moves except for the emerald green solitary bees that are clustered in the sweet Goldenrod to my left. Green and Gold are the color of the day and it seems that the small birch is in tune with the season. The sun is a little lower in the sky and each day loses a few minutes. The green leaf of this birch is already preparing for the grand finale of 2021 as it slowly trades its green for gold. In just a few weeks the Appalachian Mountains will begin to bid the sun farewell with a display to rival the finest sunsets. The turning of the first leaf is a mark on the natural calendar. Soon after the forest will sleep and dream of a glorious spring.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Reach For Your Own Goals

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sun And Sanctuary 91421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The high sun pours out on the Kanawha River as walk quietly along the path. The submerged log had caught my attention and I began to set up my tripod for a nice shot when part of log began to move. It’s a little known fact that turtles can and actually do move quickly when they want to. He hardly made a splash as he slipped below the ripples. I decided to go ahead and make the best of the location. After a fee shots of the falls and the surrounding area I turned the lens back to the log. I was zoomed in as far as the lens would go but for some reason I couldn’t get the log to stay centered in the frame. It would drift one way and then the other. That’s when I noticed that the turtle was back. When we think about turtles we don’t really think of them as climbers. And while it’s true that the odds of ever see a turtle perched in the tree tops nothing stops them from climbing as high as they can.

Everyone has limitations and gifts. But just because we can’t climb as high as we used to or as high as another can doesn’t mean that we can’t go as high as we’re capable of.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Short Trip To The Reflecting Pool

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Emerald Ripples 91121a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool waters flow gently from my mountain and gather in a special place on the edge of my property. I’ve come to think of this spot as my own personal reflecting pool. Now most reflecting pools are synthetic structures of cement, steel or plastic and hold the water captive. Perhaps a fountain that provides a small show at certain times of day is placed in pool and people cast in their small coins to make wishes. But my spot is nature’s handiwork. It ripples and flows. It’s alive and free to come and go as it pleases. In place of a fountain a good spring feeds a small cascade that leaps into the flow. Moss and ferns gaurd it’s boundaries and each season casts it’s tones across the surface. As the season changes from summer into fall the changing leaves with their brilliant hues show up as a blaze on the rippling shoals. And there’s always a form of life here. Sometimes I spot a Heron stalking in the shadows with the water around his legs and sharp eyes that look for the smallest disturbance in the patterns of ripples that indicate his prize is near. The rains will rearrange the stones and causes the ripples to change slightly so that I always have a new flow to explore. Songbirds gather in the shallow pools to bath and play and sometimes even the crows can be found searching the stream for shiny objects to adorn their nests. Butterflies gather on the soft edges and sip the cool water along with their precious salt. And I come here to find a little solitude and enjoy the light as it wades through the ripples.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Provisions And Faith

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Far Horizons 91321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The little skipper butterfly sits quietly on his purple flowers and looks out towards the realm of green laid before his eyes. From his perspective the world has no end. All that he sees is a universe with no borders nested in a small eternity. Because he knows the world was made for him he has confidence that when he launches himself into the air he’ll most likely encounter his provisions that were prepared for his life. His peace comes not from his foreknowledge but from his heart. He has no ancient history or maps made by his forefathers. He simply trusts that his maker has already put everything in place. As the breeze builds up he’s not carried by the wind. Instead he opens his wings and catches it. In spite of his tiny size he wrestles a force of nature into submission and seeks his fortune in faith that it’s already waiting to be found. May we learn such a simple truth our blessings are waiting to be discovered.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Changes

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Silky Dogwood 90521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The sun sleeps in a little more each day and goes to bed earlier each night. We tend to associate the changes in season with the changes in the weather but that’s really not how it works. The angle of the sun and earth changes slightly and the wavelength of light triggers small changes in everything. The dogwoods are among the first to give us a clue. Their leaves began to turn blood red and signal that their fruit is ripe. The Elderberry like flowers have given way to bright blue berries. The silky dogwood is a native of the Appalachian Mountains but one that’s unfortunately overlooked. The berries are edible but unlike most other dogwood berries they are blue instead of red. Rumor has it that they’re also quite tasty! But tonight my thoughts are about the signal that they send as to the closing of Summer and the time of harvest. And while we expect summer like weather in the next few days the morning is a little cooler and the nights are less humid. The color of the wildflowers is also shifting to yellow and the blue asters are starting to pop up. They say that the only constant in life is changes and so I guess that if you’re seeing changes then it means you still have life to enjoy them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
