Diver Down

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Diver Down 71020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The dog days of summer have arrived to my little slice of Appalachia. The air is so humid that I’ve often joked about being able to swim over the yard or needing a snorkel to take out the trash. Ironically enough the most popular way to escape the heat and humidity is in the water. As a child I always wanted to learn how to scuba dive. Especially after watching Jacques Cousteau on Saturday afternoons. The expense of the lessons as cost of the equipment made it a little too impractical but a set of goggles and a deep breath brought the underwater world within reach. To the young imagination every discarded beer bottle from the bottom of lake was evidence that Atlantis was real and just a few feet away from the surface of the local lake. We learned that if you can sit quietly on the bottom you could tell where the boats were idling by from the clicking noise made by the gears in the drive shaft of an outbound motor. Even the person who is paddling a raft in the swimming area gave their location away with every stroke. Jacques Cousteau may have thought that it was a silent world but fish in the lake know better. The pressure in my lungs begins to build up as a mud turtle decides that my presence is just a little too uncomfortable. He scurries beneath a log for cover and slips out the other side. The turtle is more that safe. He can stay down for much longer than a kid in swim goggles. The urge to breathe is really getting strong now and I know that I have to return to the surface. As I rise up from the bottom ( which in reality is only about 12 feet ) I can feel the temperature of the water change. Looking up at the surface I can see an amorphous window of light opening to welcome me. My hand breaks the surface first and I feel edge of the water slip around my forearm and I exhale just before my head makes the transition from water to air. And with a giant breath I dive right back down again.

A Day With The Goslings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Family Swim 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

One season blends into the next. Late Spring and early Summer are days of campfires on the lake. Brightly colored tents line the shores and kayaks glide silently beneath the cliffs. The world welcomes new life nestled in the cool grass.

Image Titled “Baby Goslings In Cool Grass.

Slowly the shadows slip back into ether that spawned them as the morning sun extends his kingdom on the lake. The little goslings begin to stir as the new light wakes their hunger.

Image Titled “Feeding Gosling 52620a”

The clover is sweet and the tender new shoots of grass are just what a growing baby needs to grow strong.

Image “Titled Feeding Gosling 52620b”

It takes a lot of food to power the little one’s day.

Image Titled “Stay Together 52620”

Once breakfast is finally finished it’s time for goslings to have their lessons. Today Mother Goose focuses on simply staying together.

Image Titled “Emerald Water And Goslings 52620”

It takes a little practice. So the babies paddle around a bit practicing the turns and maintaining a formation.

And when they’re ready mom and dad take the lead and guide them throughout the realm.

A Trip To Summersville Lake On The Cusp Of Spring

Hello friends Tonight’s feature image is titled “Summersville Lake 31020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Standing out over the water on a silent morning I look out over the lake that has been such large part of my life. The water always seems to carry it’s own mood. I have seen the lake display it’s anger when choppy waters are a greenish gray and seem to want to toss small boats onto the rocky shore. But thankfully today is different. Today a profound peace fills the canyon as the surrounding beauty soaks into the water. The glassy reflection gives the illusion of another world laying just below the surface.

The Grand Tour Of Salmon Run At Winter Pool

Pulling back from the water in panoramic mode makes the other side look like an island floating in a sea of clouds. I have never been on a kayak but days like today do make me long for the ability to toss in and just paddle until I’ve explored all 50 miles of shoreline. If not for Hughes’s Bridge it would be easy to picture one’s self as an explorer surveying some ancient world long forgotten. The caves and overhangs along the canyon walls may have been shelter for people who once thrived here. I have often wondered if you looked around would you find stone tools deep inside them? As ponder the possibility of the past a huge swirl breaks the surface and dissipates without revealing its source. I’m reminded of the legendary giant catfish that are said to hole up in those same caves in summer. But this one gets to remain as the one that got away. I just wasn’t fast enough to get a clear image of even the ripples and the legend continues as myth.

The ripples were gone before I could zoom in and focus.

Perhaps the next trip I’ll run into the fishermen who finally landed a monster.

A Rainy Day Dream Near Gad

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Into The Storm 10420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The occasional raindrop finds it’s way into the cab of my big blue truck through the slightly opening in the window. I can hear the sloshing of the wheels as I cruise across the top of the dam. The gray sky encompasses all that my eyes survey. The rain is steady but not heavy. As I approach the dam the rain lightens into a soft mist and I decided to step out for a few minutes. The ghost town of Gad lays just below somewhere. I’m to young to remember Gad but the terrain in some of the pictures I’ve seen looks close to the landscape just below the dam. The soft rain continues and I think about it soaking the mud and stones in what was once a fertile ground with crops and cattle. The ring foundation of an old silo is still visible even when the lake is full. I’m sure that lake bottom has been thoroughly searched by divers when it’s full and walkers at winter pool but I’ve always had daydreams of looking down at the mud and spotting a box of antique coins or jewelry that was left behind or lost when the town was evacuated. Such is the dreams of children. The idea came from a black and white photo of canvas tents on a hill and the rumor is that it was a civil war camp and a possible place where legendary “lost confederate gold” might have been. But when you study the history you learn that there was no gold to be shipped. In fact the south was lucky to have enough brass to build a cannon much less gold to pay soldiers. The truth about those tents is that it’s a photo of either a railroad survey crew or a band of gypsies that was known to use that spot. Which now that I think about it means it’s more likely that these last two groups would have gold to lose.

You can see the tents here as well as some of other photos of Gad.

The rain begins to pick up again and so I have to return my lens to its protective case after only a few shots and return myself to road home.

A Lazy Day At The Lake

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Lazy Day At The Lake” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Two of my favorite environments are next to any body of water and in the presence of trees. That’s why this little spot in the overflow at Salmon Run is one of my go to spots for relaxation. The lower limbs of the big old tree dip down to almost touch the water and forms a little “tent” to shelter out the hot sun. The fish seem to really like this spot too. Bass and Bluegills patrol the edges of the water and hang out near the submerged wood. Occasionally a massive carp surfaces and quickly rolls back down to murky depths.

The local kids get a big thrill from feeding the fish. They toss a few bits of stale bread on water and wait for them to disappear in tumult of hungry fish.

I took tonight’s feature image in the summer of 2008. It’s become one that I often pull out in the blahs of winter to give myself a little mood boost as I wait for the weather to catch up with my soul’s desires.
