A Trip To The Lake At Winter Pool

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Summersville Lake 12819” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The empty lake waits longingly for days of warm sun and noisy laughter echoing from its canyon walls. Today, only a few dedicated kayaks tread it’s waters. Some are taking advantage of the the better fishing opportunity that comes with winter pool and others just seek the peaceful solitude of the open water and rocky shores.

Somewhere beyond the bridge a whitetail deer leaves hoofprints in a place where a catfish once laid on the bottom waiting for nightfall.

Image Titled “Lake Sirens 1”

Tree stumps gather on the rocks and fire the imagination with thoughts of sirens calling out for Odysseus to come just a little closer.

Image Titled “Lake Dragon With Long Tail “

Just below the sirens a dragon with a long tail sleeps on a rock shelf guarding a treasure that washed away in ages past.

I sat there in my big blue truck for several minutes wondering how many more stories could be found on the empty lake bottom but the road calls for me to move beyond the murky world of the lake bottom and finish my errands. Perhaps on the next trip I’ll find the answer.

December In Gad

20191208_134408 (1)_15759436525981940631524..jpg
Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “December In Gad” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Gauley River winds it’s way through the hills past the painted sandstone cliffs of Gad, West Virginia. But the river is under the lake even at winter pool.  I stand on the end of the cement block which serves as a dock on the last portion of the road that once Followed McKee”s Creek.  Prior to the lake this was the main road through farmland below the high cliffs. I would have loved to see it in its heyday but it was flooded two years before I was born. I’ve been told that it was like a storybook with rolling hills and green pastures. There’s pictures online of the quaint general store which also functioned as a post office. Everyone is on horseback in that picture. I do remember when the bridge in tonight’s feature image was only two lanes. That was before they rerouted the highway and in the place where cars and trucks now travel at eighty miles per hour I rode a horse myself. That was the big draw for the local in. You could ride horses all the way to the lake. There was time to actually experience life when we moved slower. I often wonder if there’s an inverse relationship between the speed of travel and the quality of life. A kayak came gliding in while I was reviewing the pictures of the lake and bridge and lady who was in it seemed so much happier than the guys in the speedboat that had left a few minutes prior. In fact she didn’t stop smiling until she loaded her craft into a truck and drove away.

When I was a kid camping on the edge of the lake we used to tell ghost stories about the people who are still buried in sunken graves under the water. Today I believe that the spirit of Gad is real but it’s a feeling of peace that comes with a slower pace. The real unsettled spirits are the ones who race about on the concrete above the water.

Quiet Reflections

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Quiet Reflections” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Greeks had a saying that “In wine there is truth, in water there is health. ” I have always understood that the first half of the proverb related to how one who has indulged himself with a bit too much grape loses inhibition and blurts out whatever he’s thinking. The fullness of the proverb’s meaning impacted my mind when a college roommate stumbled in after a night on the town. He weaved and bobbed his way to the bed and fell into it face first. As the alcohol took away his sense of equilibrium he slowly rolled over and said “Stop the world. I want to get off.” Of course he was creatively referring to the room spinning but his expression kinda stuck with me all these years.

The pace that we keep in the modern world is definitely a dizzying experience. The pattern that I’ve noticed is that we binge on experience. We work long hours and come home to eat, watch T.V. and surf the web. Even when we get a chance to stop and catch a breath, relaxation is done with a counterproductive sense of urgency. It’s like we have never left the rat race at all.

The fishing pier in tonight’s feature image is set in the exact same place where I used to go and just sit by the water. I typically had a Zebco 33 rod and reel with an artificial bait. I didn’t really care if I caught any fish because the gear was just an excuse to be there and watch the water. It was my way of stopping the outside world and exiting the pace for a little while. More often than not I wound up playing with the local bluegills by allowing them to chase the lure all the way to shore. The simplicity of the action allowed me to be distracted just enough to allow deeper thoughts to come to the surface. I could have a conversation with God instead of reciting a wish list and calling it a prayer. It was a way to hit the reset button in my mind and clear all the programs that had locked up in mid process.

Today I don’t really do is much fishing as I do just setting by the water and listening to the birds or watching the butterflies play in breeze. The important thing is to sequester myself away from the pace of the outside world and recharge my batteries.

A Couple Of Mornings With Ring-eye

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Hitting The Bullseye ” because the image contains an arrow and a bullseye. Like all of the photos on my blog this one is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

It’s a peaceful morning in the Salmon Run area of Summersville Lake. The geese seem to paddle about in their tight knit group. It’s like watching a synchronized swimming exhibition. Everyone turns in time with the others. Everyone except for one that is. This goose is different. I first noticed this particular goose because of its eyes. My wife and I have come to call it “Ring-eye” because of the light ring on each eye.

This photo was taken the exact moment that I noticed the eyes of the goose. You can see in the background that all the other geese do not have the same eyes.

As soon as I saw the ring I softly spoke to the goose. “You’re special aren’t you” I whispered. To my surprise the goose reacted to me by coming closer. The goose still kept a comfortable distance outside of my reach but broke away from the flock to stay close none the less. I didn’t feed the goose because the truth is that the DNR would rather not have them in the recreational areas. But I did continue to speak to it softly. A few days later I returned to the lake for another round of photos and as soon as I stepped out of the big blue truck Ring-eye made bee-line to the shore. This goose remembered me!

Ring-eye comes to greet me.

As soon as Ring-eye reached the shore he/she Stood in the shallow water and waited for the conversation. I obliged.

Ring-eye waits for conversation to start.

We spoke for a few while I finished my coffee before gathering my gear and seeking the next shot.

I have to admit that I’m kinda curious to see if my friend is still there and remembers me on my next trip.

Evening Drive In Summertime

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Evening Drive In Summertime” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The humid summer air blows through the can of the big blue truck as I cross the top of the dam. Summer is a time for leaving the windows down and the radio up.

As a young man it was important to visit all the parking lots on summer evenings so that you could catch up with your friends. Today the restaurant at the top of the dam is Fat Eddie’s but in those days it was a Dairy Queen. I remember once when the girls convened everyone to tune in the same radio station so that the same music was playing all through the group. I can’t really remember who’s idea it was in the first place but I remember someone saying “Music brings us together.” The lake in summer will be associated with the music of the 80s. Something that seems to be missing from music entertainment is the voice of the DJ. I know that today music artists call themselves “DJ” but I’m talking about the announcers that delivered a monologue between sets. Today we have a playlist on our phone or other device that delivers a continuous stream of song but the friend who rode with you everywhere is missing. On one of my devices I have a few clips from DJs worked into the mix for “old times sake”.

When I approached the dam and the evening sky all the memories seemed come back at once. A lot of things have changed since the responsibly free summer evenings of my youth. But crossing the dam with the windows down and music up isn’t one of them.
