Keeping The Lights On

Hello Friends!Tonight’s feature image is titled “Barges And Coal” and is available for purchase by using the instructions at the bottom of the article.

On the far shore of the Kanawha River the grumbling growl of diesel engines shakes the earth. The bulldozers and loaders shift black mountains from the yard to boats. It’s believed that our world runs on coal but that’s a mistake.

Our world runs on the energy of men and women who keep the coal moving.

Our world is powered by afternoons covered with sweat and grit and diesel fuel.

Our world runs on the turn of the wrench that replaces another hydraulic hose.

Our world is powered by bonding and laughter in the downtime.

Our world is kept lit by the heavy equipment operator who knows the difference between arrogance and confidence as he moves a multi ton machine up the gob pile to dress it.

And at the end of the day when the sun sinks low all of that sweat and effort welcomes them home as a light in windows and a hot shower before dinner. All wrapped up in the arms of a loving family.

Kanawha Falls Early Spring 2019

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Kanawha Falls Power Station 32619 and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the page.

The afternoon sun beams down with all of his might. Standing on the very end of the boardwalk beneath the hydroelectric plant at Kanawha Falls I can truly appreciate the power of the Kanawha River. The cool color of river and the quiet setting brings a sense of peace. It’s not until you are at water level that you begin to realize how big the Kanawha River is.

Available as a panoramic only.

In spite of the fact that the highway is just a few feet away from the water it would be easy to believe that this scene was much farther up into the mountains and away from civilization. I’m also amazed at the variety of Aesthetics that are concentrated in this spot. Depending on the weather, season and angles of the sun I’ve been able to catch some awesome scenes with more to come as opportunity allows. Sometimes after a hard rain we’ll see huge chunks of foam floating downstream. I used to believe it was pollution. Some exotic chemicals from an unknown source but I learned that it’s actually clay deposits from the river banks up in the mountains. The clay particles tend to cling together and are churned into the foam by the falls and rapids. It was once suggested to me that native Americans would collect the foam and mix it with natural dye to make pigment but I haven’t really verified that it’s fact. There’s always a lot of driftwood here too. In all but the coldest of weather you can pass by and see the fishing fires on the rocks. Some of pieces are timber sized and I’ve always been tempted to poke around and see what I could collect and turn into art. Mostly I just like to come and watch the river.

Daydreaming In Color

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Dancing Depths” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the page.

When I was a kid my favorite color was aquamarine. I’m not really sure why but it wad probably because I wanted to be unique. As I got older my tastes shifted more towards the green tones. As I gaze into the greens and blues and the in between tones of the river I become lost in the depths of water. The variations in the light as it transitions reminds me of a gemstone. Is it any wonder why ancient people imagined that there was another world full of mythic civilizations just beyond that translucent vale? Even in modern times it wouldn’t hard to imagine the merfolk swimming by and looking up with the same wonderment of our world. Would their eyes get lost in marbled blue sky? As I watch the light shimmer on the surface and dance beneath the ripples I lose track of the schedule that demands so much of our life’s energy. For a little while I’m a child again looking for the signs of an underwater castle deep behind the blues and greens of the river.

The Traveler’s Nap

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Rest Stop” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the page.

A traveler wonders from the road and comes to rest by the little waterfall on the edge of an unexplored forest. He removed the pack that he’s carried for miles and takes a seat at the base of the falls. As he listens to the songbirds and the water his mind and body agree that it’s time to get some rest. He’ll just lower the brim of his hat a little and block out the sun for a few minutes. Well, that was his idea anyway. But before long the music of the birds and the water fade away into the distance and he sleeps. A few of smaller creatures are curious enough to nervously approach the sleeping traveler. A squirrel sneaks down the trunk of the tree and deftly hangs upside down from the hat. The lines in his face look like tree bark but he’s not made of wood. And the squirrel leaves. A songbird lands on his chest and softly tugs at his beard. But he’s not made of straw or twigs so he nests somewhere else. A salamander creeps up to the traveler’s outstretched leg and wiggles up under his pant leg. But it’s not made of moss. “Too dry.” He says as he crawls back out to continue his search. A toad takes one vigorous hop and lands abruptly on the toe of the traveler’s boot. He puffs out his chest and croaks. The boot is soft from the miles walked but it’s not a toadstool and he leaps away. Suddenly a chipmunk darts out from a nearby hollow log. Without even slowing down he runs up the sleeve of the sleeping traveler’s jacket and exits the other sleeve. The chipmunk halts on the man’s folded hands and huffs. “Not a very good tunnel. It comes out in the same place it starts.” And the chipmunk scurries off. The traveler yawned and stretched. He raises to feet and brushes the litter from his clothes. He looks around before gathering his pack and sighs. “I was really hoping to see some wildlife on this trip” he thinks as he steps back onto the road.

The moral of the story is Don’t allow the journey you’re on tire you to the point where you miss the adventure.

May I Present To You Mr & Mrs House Finch

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Suitor” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I stood carefully in the fork of the Chestnut tree my uncle and I planted all those years ago. I have my camera resting in the lower branches. I’ve been watching the feeder as all the different kinds of birds fly in and out. The sound of fluttering wings passes by the right side of my head so close that I thought he was either going to land or crash into me. I held very still and braced for a peck or a scratch from tiny talons. But there was nothing. I could tell by the sound that he had simply buzzed my head and turned away. He never came into my field of vision until the 3rd approach. That last time he landed on the feeder and called out a few times. It was at that moment that I realized what he was doing. He was testing my tolerance for his presence. In his little feathered mind if I show aggression when he taunts me then it’s not not safe for her. Now that I’ve been tested and deemed to be of no threat he brings her in. She comes in low and from the left to join him. He maintains the higher perch so he can keep watch as they eat. Always the perfect gentleman, he feeds her first. This is actually normal courtship among the house finches. She flutters her wings and gently plants bird kisses on him by pecking his beak softly. What was captured in the feature image was the moment when she opened her mouth to be fed. Which he did in typical bird fashion. This courtship went on for several minutes before they suddenly flew off together. That was a month or so ago and I suspect that by now there’s a clutch of eggs tucked safely away in a dense evergreen or even on top of a gutter spout that’s out of the weather. And like all love stories should end, they lived happily ever after.
