The Power Of Change

I was commenting with my friend today about negativity in our lives. Negative attitudes are everywhere. They invade our jobs and businesses. Negativity comes into our homes through our television and social media. Some days it seems like we’re surrounded by those who feed on misery.

But,I know the the chink in their armor.

Whatever you chose to feed grows and whatever you chose to starve dies.

Sounds like a simple solution right? Just stop feeding the negative emotions and the problem goes away. Well, kinda. Sometimes the negativity takes on a life of its own. It wants to exist. It’s hard at first to focus on the positive but soon the starvation effective kicks in and those negative voices began to weaken. The buzzards that gather around just waiting for us to fall will eventually have to find a new roost.

Daydreams Of A Legend

About tonight’s feature image, this is the same clump of willow trees that I have been photographing in different seasons for almost a year. I processed several versions of the photos but decided that the blue of the selenium filter gave the best feeling of a cold winter day. The image title is simply “The Wading Willows In January“.

The spray from Kanawha Falls seems to freeze in the air on this cold January morning. The wading willows seem to be wandering out of the mists as if they are on their way back to shore. The scene takes on an otherworldly feel that’s right out of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. If not for the soft whine of the turbines belonging to the hydroelectric dam it would be easy to forget that Route 60 was just a few steps away. Still, I have to wonder if there’s a monster lurking in the icy depths below. Not some “Devil Fish” of folklore with tenticals such but a real world monster. Every body of water has a legendary fish that’s more than just the one that got away. In my area it’s usually a catfish that’s large enough to swallow a man whole that live at the base of dams and bridges. Occasionally someone sees a V shape in the water or spots one near the surface. I’ve met at least one person who showed me an expensive fishing pole designed for fishing the ocean surf that was snapped off at the base and the hook was pulled out straight. They say that when the water is up that the really big ones come looking for new hunting grounds around the stumps and logs that are inaccessible otherwise. It would be great to rig up a big fishing pole with just the right bait on a day like this. Perhaps I could build a small fire to keep warm and settle the monster catfish issue once and for all. However, the real world need to be on time for my day job pulls me away from the quest and the really big one gets away again.

Twilight Stillness

The ebbing daylight lingers a little more each day. Slowly but surely the melting ice soaks into the earth or makes it’s way to the river. I’ve begun to hear birds singing throughout the day. Already the Tuffed Titmouse and the Sapsucker gave been spotted on the sides of the trees. These birds are here year-round but tend to stay sheltered in the deep woods during the darkest days. I’ve also noticed that the wind is shifting from Northwest to Southwest. It will bounce back and forth over the next month or so before settling down. The exciting part for me is the increased opportunity for twilight and sunsets. Most of the photos I post are taken on the fly as I travel to and from my day job. Tonight’s Feature Image was taken in the parking lot of Tractor Supply. Silhouette of the windmill and fading light was something that I couldn’t resist. The contrail from the passing jet gave me the impression of a shooting star. So much so that I almost made a wish when I pulled up the file. Within a few minutes of snapping the shutter the last rays of light faded behind the mountain and the window for shooting closed. I clicked the button on my key fob and the headlights of my big blue truck came to life to guide me home to my wife and pup.

Rust And Rebirth

It’s been a while since I have seen a train on this set of tracks. The strong railroad steel is covered with a growing layer of rust and the Sycamore trees are steadily reclaiming their territory. I can tell by the size of the shoots that it’s been about two years give or take since one of the powerful engines have come thundering down the line. The section of tracks next to this set still has a shiny surface and there’s no underbrush growing between the cross ties which means that trains are still around but they now travel to a different destination. Which leaves me to wonder if this section of tracks is destined to become a hiking trail? I’ve never really walked this set of tracks but I’ve driven but I driven through some of the same countryside and there’s a lot of potential. It’s remote enough in some places to be interesting but close enough to civilization for a measure of safety. Some of the backcountry is rugged and there’s bound to be a few steep climbs for a challenge. Of course all this is just recognizing the opportunity and wondering what the next phase is for my Appalachian Mountains. Whatever the future holds is really up to the people who live here. I think it be a real shame to just set back and watch the weeds continue to grow.

Memories Of The Hay Fields

When I was very young putting up hay was a way for most young men to make a little spending money. A person could drive through the country at certain times of the year and the fields were lined from one end to the other with rows and rows of square bales of hay. The farmers would be seen with huge stacks of perfectly compressed blocks of cut and dried grasses of various types towering over tractors or pickup trucks on their way to a barn. It wasn’t really uncommon to a couple of the older boys riding on top of the stack as the vehicle drifted carefully across the fields while two more boys tossed more bales up to add to the stack. The unloading process was just as laborious with the boys on top of the stack tossing the bales back down or directly into the barn for storage.

Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s I started seeing the large round bales like you see in the feature image. My grandfather began remarking on how his poor cows wouldn’t be able to have a square meal. The iconic large stack of square bales disappeared into the past. ( I’m sure that there’s still some around however I haven’t seen it for decades). The crew of three or four teenage boys was replaced by a tractor with a fork lift attachment. The round bales turned out to be a be a better deal for the farmer because of the labor costs but every time I see the round bales I get nostalgic for the view of acres and acres perfectly lined up rectangular blocks on contour with the landscape.
