A Bright Spot In My Day

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “A Bright Spot In My Day 82519” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

She floats in on the warm breeze as I stand on the edge of my forest just enjoying a few minutes of peace and quiet. Like a living stained glass window her beautiful wings are the color of a summer sunset. The light breeze gently shakes the the purple flowers spreading the sweet scent into the air. The monarch butterfly patiently explores each of the little floretas she searches for a sweet meal. The sun seems to smile with joy at the fluttering wings as she stirs up the sweet smell while is feeding. She’s only there for a moment before the breeze carries her on to her next stop. But a moment is all it takes to make a day better.

Gearing Up For My Spring Countdown

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Omens 10619B” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As I stand on the banks of the Kanawha River looking up I see the circling black shadows draw closer as they soar in the thermals. When the picture was taken, the days were just starting to grow noticeably shorter and the weather hadn’t changed yet. But the buzzards knew that it would soon be time to make a yearly voyage to their winter grounds.

As the days grow longer I’ve learned to watch the sky for the flights of the large black shapes to seen circling in the thermals. Most likely it’s still several weeks away but just like when swallows return to Capistrano the buzzards return to Glen Ferris. The usually arrive just prior to the buds on the trees opening and at a time when the spring storms start. We often hear tales of the Thunderbird. After observation of buzzards I have to wonder if the legend is rooted in the buzzard’s habitat of soaring in with the storms.

We’ll probably not see them for a while yet but I will be watching the sky because when I see them in clusters I know that Spring isn’t far behind. According to the calendar we have 37 days ( 36 by the time most people see this post ) but if Punxsutawney Phil is correct I should be seeing them any day now.

Taking A Few Minutes To Enjoy A Peaceful Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 12420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the night shrinks away in the glow of the morning sun the clouds retreat into the horizon. The peaceful sky is mirrored by the upper Kanawha River as the local ducks glide in for a landing on the far side of the water. As their ripples proceed them small fish leap forward and dive into the safety of the deep. The remnant clouds marble the sky in layers and golden rays breech the ridge. There’s still a bit of a chill in morning air which smells of woodsmoke mingled with the coffee in my tumbler. On this particular morning the forest is silent save only the droning roar of the water spilling over the dam and the rocks below. In the coming days the rain will return but for now there is peace.

Ironweed, Honeybees & Staying Warm In Winter

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Ironweed 91419” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Outside of my window a cold rain washes away the last of February’s first snow. Even though this winter has been relatively mild it’s still cold enough for a fire in the fireplace and have a cup of coffee while reviewing my archive. The image of the ironweed from early September came up and I thought it was the perfect subjec to bring a little warmth to a gray day.

When I look into the photo I can feel the balmy breeze against my skin and smell the sweetness of the ironweed bloom. The day was warm without being humid. The leaves were just showing the first sign of color. The bees were busy with gathering pollen for that last bit of honey to get them through the oncoming winter. I’m by no means an expert on honeybees but I’ve learned that that don’t actually hibernate in winter. So they have to store enough honey to feed themselves until Spring. Honeybees activity warm the hive with their metabolism so there has to be plenty of fuel for their bodies or their whole colony could die. Fortunately the ironweed is both plentiful and productive for them. The plant itself is considered to be weed and is often cut down as such but in doing so we are removing a resource from the honeybees that pollinate the flowers that produce the fruit and seed that feeds the rest of forest.

As I’m considering the connection between the ironweed and the survival of bees through winter I notice that coffee is gone, the fire is low and its time for me to do a little hibernation of my own.

The Morning Commute Of Old Number 1100

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Morning Commute 13020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cold morning air settles into the valley causing a thick fog to rise. The sun arrived a little late because of the clouds but darkness is no match for piercing glare of old number 1100 as it idles on tracks waiting for crew to come in and pick up the journey where they left off for the night. The powerful diesel engine powers an electric generator that turns the wheels. The strength of seven thousand horses eagerly anticipates the command to move over fifteen thousand tons of coal. The brakes are released and with a scream of moving metals the train begins to drift forward. Thunderous booms echo through the mountains as each linkage engages and another load of electricity is on the way.
