A Rainy Day Dream Near Gad

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Into The Storm 10420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The occasional raindrop finds it’s way into the cab of my big blue truck through the slightly opening in the window. I can hear the sloshing of the wheels as I cruise across the top of the dam. The gray sky encompasses all that my eyes survey. The rain is steady but not heavy. As I approach the dam the rain lightens into a soft mist and I decided to step out for a few minutes. The ghost town of Gad lays just below somewhere. I’m to young to remember Gad but the terrain in some of the pictures I’ve seen looks close to the landscape just below the dam. The soft rain continues and I think about it soaking the mud and stones in what was once a fertile ground with crops and cattle. The ring foundation of an old silo is still visible even when the lake is full. I’m sure that lake bottom has been thoroughly searched by divers when it’s full and walkers at winter pool but I’ve always had daydreams of looking down at the mud and spotting a box of antique coins or jewelry that was left behind or lost when the town was evacuated. Such is the dreams of children. The idea came from a black and white photo of canvas tents on a hill and the rumor is that it was a civil war camp and a possible place where legendary “lost confederate gold” might have been. But when you study the history you learn that there was no gold to be shipped. In fact the south was lucky to have enough brass to build a cannon much less gold to pay soldiers. The truth about those tents is that it’s a photo of either a railroad survey crew or a band of gypsies that was known to use that spot. Which now that I think about it means it’s more likely that these last two groups would have gold to lose.

You can see the tents here as well as some of other photos of Gad.

The rain begins to pick up again and so I have to return my lens to its protective case after only a few shots and return myself to road home.

The True Story Of My “Pet” Hawk.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Watching From Above 22718” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The little boy played in meadow doing things that a country boy in the 70s and 80s would find natural. He climbed trees and rocks. He caught salamanders and crayfish out of the creeks and puddles. He made swords from sticks and did battle with the trees standing in for the bad guys. One day he was having an adventure down in a marsh when he had that eerie feeling of being watched. He scanned the trees and bushes but there was nobody. He looked for signs of a bear or coyote but the woods was empty. Then he looked up. Perched on a branch in the top of a nearby walnut tree was the largest hawk he’d ever seen. It sat there like a statue only cocking it’s head every so often. He was profoundly curious about the raptor. He’d never been this close to one in wild before. The hawk was large for a hawk but too small to be a threat to him or the cattle. So he watched the hawk back. After a few moments he tried to speak to it in the same calm voice he was taught to use around pets and livestock. The cocked it’s head to the other side but otherwise didn’t react. After a while he got bored and moved his adventure to another part of the farm only to find that the hawk had followed him. Ove the next few days this pattern continued. No matter where the boy played the hawk turned up eventually. So he gave the bird of prey a name worthy of an avian hunter. The name was “Falcor”. A combination of Falcon and his favorite comic book hero at the time which was Marvel’s Thor.

I was the boy and Falcor was real. Although every time I tried to tell someone about my “pet hawk” they smiled at my wild imagination. I don’t know if Falcor visited other people or even if they noticed when he did. I kinda doubt that he did because he never seemed to come around when other’s were present. After a few times of being given “that look” by my friends and family I stopped mentioning him. For several years I’d go on one of my walks in the woods and Falcor follow me in the distance. He never got real close but he would always be in a nearby tree. I couldn’t explain why until one day when I was older I told the story of “Falcor the hawk” to a professor in my wildlife biology class. He was the first one to actually believe that the hawk was more than just the wild imagination of a little boy who played in the wilderness. He also had a pretty logical explanation for the bird’s odd behavior. He had done some work with The West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center and theorized that Falcor had come out of that program and that for some reason I must have reminded him of one of his caretakers. So it turns out that Falcor may have been waiting to be fed. Whatever the hawks motivation was to follow me around for a few years he still the coolest “pet” that I never actually owned and he has severed as the inspiration for a couple of characters in a couple of fiction stories that I will finish one day. Even today I’m reminded of him every time I see a hawk that seems to just be hanging out near humans.

When The Sun Sings

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “When The Sun Sings” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I sit in the cab of my big blue truck and watch the mists coalesce into droplets on my windshield. This winter has been soggy even though it’s a little warmer than normal. As the beads roll down the glass I close my eyes and recall a warm breeze that crossed my yard and gently rung the chimes. The wind smelled of mint and fresh cut grass. If I concentrate enough I can feel the warmth on face as a warbler trills out his love song. On the edge of the yard the flowers hum melody as thousands of tiny wings play in the breeze. The flowers shake and weave as the bumblebees drink their fill. They’ve become used to presence and pay no attention to me as I approach the sea of bright colors. They rise effortlessly into the air going from plant to plant. To me, they resemble an armada of tiny zeppelins in some steampunk vision of a future metropoulos.

The bumblebees have no worries as they work. The sun’s song is a call for them to live as God intended. Their lives are their own with little thought as to the ticking of a clock.

I hold the moment intensely in my mind with all its details intact and open my eyes with a deep breath. The gray sky hangs low but I feel a little warmer as I turn the key in the ignition and the rhythmic thumping of the wipers pushed the water aside. It’s time for the big blue truck to carry me back home.

A Lazy Day At The Lake

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Lazy Day At The Lake” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Two of my favorite environments are next to any body of water and in the presence of trees. That’s why this little spot in the overflow at Salmon Run is one of my go to spots for relaxation. The lower limbs of the big old tree dip down to almost touch the water and forms a little “tent” to shelter out the hot sun. The fish seem to really like this spot too. Bass and Bluegills patrol the edges of the water and hang out near the submerged wood. Occasionally a massive carp surfaces and quickly rolls back down to murky depths.

The local kids get a big thrill from feeding the fish. They toss a few bits of stale bread on water and wait for them to disappear in tumult of hungry fish.

I took tonight’s feature image in the summer of 2008. It’s become one that I often pull out in the blahs of winter to give myself a little mood boost as I wait for the weather to catch up with my soul’s desires.

The Beauty Of Blue and Green

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Walnut Tree 12420″and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The weather breaks for a short time while old man winter draws his next breath. We typically feel his next icy blast sometime around Valentines Day.

Meanwhile in the valley the Kanawha River runs strong and steady on its perpetual march to the Ohio River. A few water birds are seen playing follow the leader on the other side but even my 400 mm lens is too weak for a good shot at that range. I’ve seen what looks like a Hooded Merganser paddling in the flat water above the falls but I haven’t been able to get close enough to be sure. One by one the ducks take off from the river and sail over the falls. So I take out my phone and go for a vertical panoramic of the Walnut Tree on the lot. It’s an ancient tree and it’s massive crown seems to reach out and tickle the clouds as the roll by. I have to work quickly because I only have a few minutes for the stop and so after the shots are taken I climb back up into the big blue truck throw the phone on charge. Later as I do my touch ups and edits I noticed that the grass in the photo is no longer dry and brown as it was just three short weeks ago. Instead it’s fresh and green. Last year I noticed that some of tree buds had begun to swell near the end of February and the green grass is just one more sign that nature us slowly beginning to stir.
