A Few Moments Of Solitude At November’s Closing

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sourwood 112121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The scent of the fallen leaves drifts in cold damp air. A little further up the hill I can hear the woodpecker tapping out a lively rhythm and being answered by the barking of a squirrel who is apparently not a fan of the woodpecker’s tune. The leaves are tumbling down like the rain. Warm mists transform into a chilling fog that drifts over the mountains as shadows grow long. Instinctively the deer move deeper into the cover of the evergreens as November begins its farewell until next year. All around the mountains are mushrooms in a greater variety than I’ve ever noticed before. Or perhaps they’ve always been there and I’ve not noticed them until I became interested in them. The woodpecker now flies overhead and laughs to reveal my hiding place. And so it’s time to move on and look for new wonders to behold.

The Light Lives In It

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Light Lives In It 111821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Appalachia moves squarely into the days of shadows. The sun sleeps late and goes to bed early. But while there is light in the world life holds onto it and drinks deeply of its glow. The pale yellow leaves in the deep forest are alive with light. They don’t seem to just catch the light but instead they join with it until they have a glow all of their own. In the coming days the world will first grow dark and then become cold. It’s the light that we join with that will carry us through. But the darkness doesn’t last long. In just 32 days the dark days peak and light returns my mountain. You won’t notice it at first. There will only be a few minutes difference until mid February but the light is there even if we don’t notice. It’s 32 days until the new light and 121 days until Spring.

Stick Battles

A crisp mountain breeze flutters the maple leaves above my head adding to the feeling of fire as I gaze into the remaining canopy. Even as a young boy I had the freedom to roam the farm as I pleased but there was always something about the little strip of trees between the driveway and what was part of a neighbor’s pasture at the time. There was always something interesting here. We gathered sticks to have fights here. Now it wasn’t that us boys actually did any fighting. But what we did was more like trading blows. The rules were that one boy would hold his stick out while the other one gave it a good whack with his stick in an attempt to break them. And you would take turns. Whoever was holding the shortest stick at the end was the loser. One of my champion sticks came from this very maple tree. The trick of course was to get them before they were on the ground too long and we learned the relative strength of each type of wood this way. Sometimes the game would be played on a fallen log or an outcrop of large rocks in a variation of “The Floor Is Lava”. In late October the long brittle stems of Ironweed and Joe-Pye-Weed became fencing sabers but you had to gather a lot of them because sometimes they would break in mid swing. If you had a dud you got a do over. Today I just love looking up at the firy colored leaves and being lost in the beauty of an Appalachian Fall but I can’t deny that some part of me wants to find a good stick on the ground and shake it at my brother while barking “EN GARDE”! and wasting the whole afternoon running through the mountains.

The Game Of Chase

As a youth I greatly enjoyed the stories written by Pat McManus. And one of my favorites was the one where he asked who was responsible for issuing army boots to squirrels. Now it’s been more than 30 years since I sat in a classroom not doing schoolwork but learning about the person I would become so I don’t remember Pat’s story verbatim. However, we was correct about them being the noisiest creatures in the woods. Typically, I drift along in my big blue truck looking for whatever catches my eye to photograph. The day I took the photo in tonight’s Feature Image I had an escort. Or perhaps he was a competitor because he seemed to be racing me. In all honesty I was barely going faster than idle speed but the little squirrel stayed even with the truck and when I allowed him to get out ahead of me he would stop and wait. Finally I caught him in enough of a clearing to get a few pictures. In what could only be described as “antics” the squirrel rushed out ahead and stopped. When he saw that the truck hadn’t moved he ran back and began barking and fussing for attention then ran out again. Eventually he figured out that I was going to chase him and he got comfortable on the log. He’d flick his tail at me a few times and circle one of trees in a game of peekaboo but always come back to this spot and watch for a reaction. At some point he was joined by another of his kind and so with a new playmate that was more interactive he took his game of chase to the treetops.

Late Fall Beauty

As the full color of the Appalachian Forest fades its easy to overlook the more subtle treasures of nature. The seedbox is one such treasure. When it’s in bloom it’s a pleasing yellow flower but when the fruit forms the intricate orngish pod looks like something out of Rivendell. It even has a decorative top.

I’ve only found it growing wild in one place but it’s been there faithfully for years. Every year in late Fall through Early Spring I make occasional pilgrimages to this spot to remind myself that even when my forest sleeps beauty abounds. Appalachia in winter becomes a wonderland of textures. The tiny seedbox is one of more exotic forms native to my area but it’s not the only one. It’s this time of year when you really begin to notice things like the pods of black locust and the salmon pink tones of river birch. The fluted trunk and branches of Hornbeam also comes to mind. On those days when it’s not too cold to enjoy a walk take a look around and appreciate the beauty that’s normally hidden by the leaves.
