Return Of The Honeyees

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Afternoon Visitor 41921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The small things in life are often among the most important. Three years ago all of the Honeybees seemed to vanish from my area. The native solitary bees seemed to fill the gap and even increased their numbers as more food was available to them. But honeybees are special. Last year I noticed a slight increase in the numbers of honeybees on my mountain and this year I was overjoyed to see that pattern repeating. Just beyond my property line is land that belongs to the timber company. It’s seldom used. In fact I’ve never seen the first timber company employee there. The landscape is untouched for the most part. Only the power line right of way is occasionally trimmed back. The trimmings are left where they fall to return to nature and replenish the soil. It’s the perfect environment for the wild geraniums. My wife had noticed that the light was striking a patch of the geraniums just right and suggested that take my lens and capture them in their full glory. As I knelt down to get the best angle I noticed movement. And then another one, and another one. Here and there I noticed the shaking of the blossoms. Before I knew it I was surrounded by the tiny workers who were steadily working on the purple flowers. And the flowers responded by releasing even more of their sweet fragrance. And there was more than I’ve seen in several years. It wasn’t long before the hum of their wings could be heard and flowers were shaking up to the edge of the rocks. I’ve also noticed that the hornet population has been dwindling which I credit to the songbirds. I’ve watched as they go after the nest and pick it apart harvesting the larve before they become hornets. Hornets of course raid honeybee hives and can decimate a colony. But the songbirds may be playing a role in restoring the balance. Irregardless I’m happy to see the honeybee numbers increase.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Humble Beginnings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Humble Beginnings 41921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The forest is alive with the scattered calls of all the songbirds. Each day a new voice would seem to join the great chorus of joy that fills my life on the mountain. The Eastern Towhee has so far eluded my lens but he and his mate have made their way to the feeders and now I have their song in my life as well. What’s more is that the forest is really turning green now. After the long dull gray of winter the new leaves just the ointment sore eyes require. By May life on my mountain could be compared to living inside the emerald. It’s on warm green days that I like to kick off my shoes in the soft grass and stretch my arms out to let the breeze wash over me. However, my trip today definitely requires good shoes as I tread lightly into the forest edge and check my sanctuary. I’m greeted by the beech. It’s a small tree now that is just a little over six feet tall but one day it will be a giant.

Image “Titled Humble Beginnings 41921b”.

Most of the twigs still have buds but a few have opened to reveal the viridescent treasure I’ve longed for. As I said earlier this beech is small. It’s wispy trunk isn’t even a full inch thick yet. One day it will tower over the forest and yield up tons of nutlets. I can envision what will look like hundreds of years after I’m gone. I imagine that it will completely fill the trail at that time. I also imagine that a person after my own heart will come and sit quietly under it’s canopy and listen to the songs of the descendants of my beloved songbirds and pray, think and dream.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Day With The Salt Miners

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Salt Miners 40621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As my big blue truck eases gently to the wide spot on the country road the air suddenly fills with golden wings. I had tried not to disturb their work but I guess that I had overestimated their tolerance for incursion. However, a few dedicated individuals continue to diligently siphon the mud for a precious mineral prize. The Swallowtail butterfly actually has an economy of sorts. Like many West Virginia natives they are miners. The male spends several hours per day collecting salt and storing it in special organs to use as a dowry for his mates. And though I spotted a few females waiting on the edge of the forest for a male to make an offer all of the ones working in the mud are males. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail male is always yellow but the females are black with even darker stripes that you can only see in the right light. And as rudimentary as their economy is it takes more than being the highest bidder to win the approval of the females. The male will have to also pass a rigorous test of aerobics to prove that his genes are worthy of being passed on. She will lead the courtship dance. She’ll test his speed and agility by leading him on a merry chase in the wind. I’ve even seen them engage in what fighter pilots call a “High yo-yo” where the lead flips into a loop and ends up behind the pursuer. But it all starts on the edge of a puddle where the male can mine his currency.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Tattle Tale

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Tattle Tale 41321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I tread softly along the narrow path that leads up the mountain into the deep woods in hopes of spotting new life laying quietly in a thicket. Mama deer should be hiding her babies this time of year. The fawn’s reaction to an approaching human is usually to stay as still as possible and try not to give away it’s position. In the past I’ve even been able to creep within a few feet of a sleeping fawn and lay there pretending to nap with it. The deer on the farm where I grew up are under very little pressure from humans and are more trusting than the average deer. But on this day I was given away by the noisiest creature in nature. The Appalachian gray squirrel. Confident in his ability to escape the the little squirrel allowed his own curiosity to get the best of him and he stalked me while I stalked the deer. Once he decided that I was something to be avoided he took a higher position and began the loudest rant that he could muster. Violently shaking his bushy tail and chattering like mad he was one pound of full fury. Just out of sight and about a third of the way over the hill the crashing sounds of hooves through the brush announced that I would find no sleeping deer in the forest this time. The only thing I could say was “AW Nuts!”. Oh well, there will be another one soon. But for now, at least I have a photo of the Tattle Tale.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days!

Their Own Little Island Is About To Become A Happy Home

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reflections On The Day 40621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sunshine warms the cool water of the highland delta as the mother goose quietly tends to her nest and clutch of eggs. Her little island was the perfect place for a goose to sit quietly and enjoy the sun. She seems so peaceful amidst the reeds and the thorns of the wild roses that provide protection from behind. She seems to gaze into the reflections on the water as if quietly contemplating her brood beneath her as she waits for her mate to return with her dinner. Their own little island is about to become a happy home.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
